  1. Hmmm, makes a good case for giving the fish gluten-free food too eh?
  2. True enough, they are supposed to list wheat, and the other major (official) allergens. There is a catch though, because gluten is in rye and barley also, and there is no requirement to list rye and barley in the allergens alert section of the label. So it does indeed pay to read the labels carefully. The Chicago Tribune article was very informative...
  3. Good to hear things are going better! I had problems swallowing for a while too. In my case I think it was partly caused by gas in the stomach. I know that sounds simple compared to some of the other things described. But it definitely can cause problems swallowing and pain. I have a thyroid cyst also, but haven't had any problems swallowing past that...
  4. Well, you got lots of good idea already. I can't believe nobody mentioned snow ice cream though. A little food color and some sugar and you gots desert. But don't use the yellow snow unless you make it with food coloring. Hmmm, any more practical ideas? Oh, maybe some summer sausage would be good with the chips. It keeps pretty well. Roasted...
  5. Question For The Less Sensitive: How Far Do You Go? What, do you expect all the men on the board to respond? Just kidding! I didn't think I was very sensitive to gluten when I first started the diet. But after a few months it seemed to change. I got more sensitive to very small amounts of gluten. And I now find I am sensitive to other...
  6. If you are hooked on flavored yogurt Mr.Moore, maybe the thing is to make your own flavors. You can probably get some fruit preserves and add them to the plain yogurt fairly easy. There are people on the board who eat yogurt. Perhaps if you do a search on yogurt you'll find some threads on safe brands here. There is usually a way around these things....
  7. Right you are Julirama, the Biocard checks IGA per their website. Sorry I didn't catch that. I guess it was easy for you to see with your one great big enormous eye vs. my tiny 2 little eyes with coke bottle glasses! Not that' there's anything wrong with that! Hopefully your doc can figure out some kind of test for you.
  8. Some kinds do and some don't. You have to check each brand and flavor to find out for sure. I don't eat yogurt myself, so I don't know if there are any safe brands where all flavors are ok. I think the best bet is the plain yogurts with no flavorings added. But you would still need to check and verify it yourself.
  9. Maybe you could do a different test? They have the Biocard home test available in Canada now. It is a $50 blood test you can do at home. Perhaps you can find a doctor in Canada to do the Biocard test for you or sell you the test and you can do it yourself. I don't know if it is legal to bring it into the USA. But it shouldn't be illegal to travel to...
  10. That's a good question Mr. Moore. I am avoiding yeast myself, but I don't know how many people are. There have been studies linking baker's yeast antibodies to Crohn's Disease. In fact, one doctor has a patent on testing for baker's yeast antibodies as a method to detect Crohn's. Anyhow, my younger brother had Crohn's and I have celiac. So I tend to...
  11. Well, I don't buy into the throw out the silverware and pans thing myself. If it is smooth metal or clay you should be able to wash it clean. The bible has an instruction about washing pots 3 times, that would probably do the trick. Now wood or plastic could be an issue because of the porus more abosorbtive surface. I think a bigger issue might be cc...
  12. Hi Brendan, Gluten is not an unnatural product. It is a protein naturally occuring in some grains. It is often manipulated / processed and ends up with different names as ingredients. But the basic stuff is all natural and the natural stuff (gluten protein) is a problem for celiacs. Some celiacs avoid processed foods because gluten can be hidden...
  13. I haven't had those exact symptoms myself. But I do have ringing in the ears, occassional muscle twitches, eye lid twitches or tick, dizzyness, loss of balance, joint pain, that's eough, there's more of course. Anywho, most of my symptoms improved or lessened after going gluten-free. Some of the neuropathy issues are supposed to be caused by vitamin levels...
  14. Hi Mark, If you do a search on "celiac associated condition" you will find lots of info on things that can happen. Here is one list, there are others too. * Anemia * Autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus * Certain types of intestinal cancer * Dermatitis herpetiformis...
  15. Welcome to the celiac club Blue! There is some real good advice in here already. I just want to mention a few things to think about. Getting started going gluten-free can seem a little overwhelming at first. There are lots of ingredients to learn about that might have seemed just fine before but now all are suspicious characters. Trying to research...
  16. It's easy, you can eat anything that doesn't make you sick. Think about foods made from scratch, with veggies, rice, meat whatever, as long as it dosen't have wheat rye or barley flour in it. There is a thread around here somewhere about treat or dessert that is full of neat ideas. From what I have read, the tests for the antibodies are pretty...
  17. Maybe you could be in the kitchen with her if you wore a breathing mask and took a change of clothes? You know, like the masks you see people wearing to prevent infection sometimes. They sell paper masks like that at Home Deport and such places for painters to use when spray painting, and they aren't expensive. Hmmm, I can see you now, standing way over...
  18. Very cool. I registered and posted a positive comment on their newspaper site. It can't hurt to let them know celiac's are interested after all. Thanks for posting this!
  19. I've had a pain in my left side under the ribs for many years. It has mostly retreated since going gluten-free last year though. Flares up some times but not as bad. I think it is related to intestinal symptoms though not positive. For years before I went gluten-free, I used to lay in bed trying to sleep but couldn't. I found that laying on my left side...
  20. You can probably find some gluten-free friendly restaurants in your area. There is a program called GFRAP that lists restaurants that are trained in gluten-free food preparation. You find it doing a google on gfrap. There are also usually some independent restaurants in larger cities that are celiac friendly. So you don't have to give up going out to...
  21. Hi Ryan, Or another option is too click on the "My Assistant" link on the top right hand side of the forum. That opens a little window with options. Then click on my last 10 posts link. Then you click on the Post Preview link number at the bottom of each section for the ten posts to go to that post. If you have Firefox browser you can right click...
  22. I don't usually upchuck from gluten, but I have had episodes of violent heaving due to other things. Once was in Korea when a buddy I went out drinking and both got something the same night. I couldn't keep anything down for a day and a 1/2, even water. Got what they call the dry heaves. I finally tried some 7-Up, and for some reason that worked. I think...
  23. Black pepper, nutmeg, and tumeric on your foods may help. Black pepper and nutmeg are supposed to lower the permeability of the intestinal walls somewhat. Turmeric is supposedly a natural way to lower the bodies immune response. Psyillium husks powder too, just mix a little in our foods when you eat. I like celery sticks with peanut butter or oatmeal...
  24. I have been gluten-free for almost a year now, and just last week started being able to eat dairy again without having reactions. Although I do take Lactaid with it. But before this I had been lactose intolerant for 12 years and totally avoided it for the most part. Some lactaid type pills have gluten in them so watch out for that if you are using it....

Your specialist will probably tell you about foods to avoid and so forth. Also might want to tell you about vitamin deficiencies that celiacs often have. Or suggest coming back for checkups on your progress every 6 months or so. I have been taking B vitamins and Vitamin D every day but my doc just told me I am Vitamin D deficient after a year. There are...
