ARCHIVED Genes In The Family
lizard00 replied to cnosmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I didn't get the feeling that you were opposed to doctors at all!! My question was do you think that presenting your husband with a genetic predisposition will be more convincing to him than his going from FTT to thriving with the removal of gluten? Because to me, I would more convinced by that clear piece of evidence. -
ARCHIVED Meat
lizard00 replied to mysecretcurse's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Plain, raw meat is gluten free naturally. If you buy it out of a case, just be careful if there are other prepared foods in there. Frozen stuff is usually full of sodium and some sort of preservative. I steer pretty clear of frozen meats (although I do some frozen seafood occasionally). It's ok. If you didn't eat meat before, it's unknown territory. BTW... -
ARCHIVED Genes In The Family
lizard00 replied to cnosmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had my test done through Prometheus, and insurance is supposed to cover it. I'm still working on that one though... It's a blood test, which may or may not be the way you want to go with your 18mo. Enterolab is just a saliva swab, as you know, but they only test the alpha part of the chain. So you may still not get the answer you're looking for. Even... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help, thinking On Ordering Test Online.
lizard00 replied to driedupfish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How do the tests work? If you are able, I suggest finding a PCP to help you sort out any other issues you may be having, and run the full version of the celiac panel. Besides, those tests still don't test for total IgA serum (IF they do, I didn't see where it was listed), and if you are IgA deficient you will be wasting your money. Which could be why... -
ARCHIVED Explaining Gluten Intolerance/celiac
lizard00 replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It happens a lot! And logically, when we're eating. I don't see anything wrong in you wanting to hold off until after you eat, especially when you start to explain symptoms and all the gross stuff that goes with celiac. You could just make a joke out of it and say "Look... do you really want me to tell all the gross stuff while we're eating. Let's talk... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Anginettes
lizard00 replied to luciddream928's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi I find rice flour at my regular grocery store. Sorghum I have to get at either Whole Foods or the local health food store. Personally, I started using Carol Fenster's flour blend which is sorghum, tapioca starch and potato starch, and I really like it so far. Sorghum is about the closest wheat flour substitute. I find rice flour to be crumbly... but... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Freak? Or Something Else?
lizard00 replied to minton's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What were your parents genetic results? It is estimated that somewhere around 30% of the US population carry the genetic markers for Celiac, but it is only estimated that around 1% of the US population will actually develop celiac disease. Whether those numbers are accurate or not remains to be seens, BUT could be that whomever passed on the celiac genes... -
I would think that an allergist could test you for a corn allergy. If it were an intolerance, that's where the testing gets tricky, as there really aren't "formal" tests. The best way to figure that out is simply to eliminate it.

I agree. Contact the caterer. Most of them are pretty familiar with the gluten free diet, and can be pretty accommodating; in fact, my mom just recently got married and we are having a big bash for the all the extended family and friends and the caterer is going to have gluten free foods there just for me. Now, you can be sure I'm going to go over it a...

Potlucks are hard for me, too. This summer, I was doing something where people fed me lunch for two weeks straight. There was always a theme (like Italian one day... oooh, that was bad), but let's just say I was sick pretty much the whole month of July and into August. What works is to either bring your own food, or bring a dish that you can eat, squirrel...

My new prize book is 1,000 Gluten Free Recipes by Carol Fenster. Check it out! -
SO? Aren't you mad that he poked you in the gut repeatedly? Tell him why, tell him you want your money back. Or go get your stuff and never go back. Who cares if he's mad.

ARCHIVED Initial Diagnosis A Possible Gluten Problem?
lizard00 replied to songstressc's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm in there with ravenwoodglass... I could be half dead and NEVER have positive celiac blood tests. Although, I am diagnosed. A reaction is a reaction, whether it's a huge amount over the range, or just one or two points. Making antibodies to gluten doesn't happen if gluten is not a problem for you. Your ND is exactly right, false negatives are unfortunately... -
ARCHIVED Can A Celiac Bake With Regular Flour And Not Get Sick?
lizard00 replied to mochimps's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've cooked with regular flour ONCE since going gluten-free. I was sick the rest of the day. I'm not really sure you could use it without inhaling it, or eating it for that matter. It does go EVERYWHERE. There are great recipes out there and great mixes. You could probaby make your husband gluten free brownies and he'd never know. If you post the recipe... -
ARCHIVED Fage Greek Yogurt
lizard00 replied to LCotter's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think you have gotten great advice with the food journal. I pretty much know within an hour or so what is going to bother me, but it took me a lot of paying attention to get there. I kept food journals, too, for a while, until I could get a general reaction time, and narrowed down pretty much everything that bothered me. I used to eat Fage everyday... -
ARCHIVED Beautiful Pink Kitchenaid Mixer
lizard00 replied to angel-jd1's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've been eyeing that mixer for probably four years, too. I am so jealous of you right now... I would take it in doo doo brown if I could get it for $129 LOL -
ARCHIVED An Intro Of Sorts
lizard00 replied to CrazyCanuck's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome Jay! It has been 365+ days since I have purposely ingested gluten... since you started it off like a recovery meeting, I figured I'd go with it! Seriously, it's been right about at a year for me, and in the beginning, there was a lot to learn and adjust to. It truly does get easier with each day, and especially as you begin to recover... -
ARCHIVED Did I Eat Any Gluten?
lizard00 replied to amcoops's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many peperamis have wheat in them. Perhaps that was it? Oh, and welcome to our forum! -
ARCHIVED My gluten-free Might Have Celiac...
lizard00 replied to christopher's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hefeweizen beer... I'd almost forgotten about that. Certainly is mighty tasty... and as of yet, I've not had something comparable. Welcome to the forum! This is a great place for both of you! I want to say how great it is that you are trying to learn beforehand, so you can help her. If she has to go gluten-free, then support, especially in the beginning... -
ARCHIVED What Did I Do Wrong
lizard00 replied to Chrissyb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
gluten-free baking is certainly a challenge!! I'm not a baker naturally... I CAN bake, it's just not something I was ever into. But for the pie crust, all the recipes I've seen require cold butter and ice water. And also at least an egg... which can easily be replaced. I couldn't tell you why the cold butter and ice water are necessary, but on all the... -

ARCHIVED Enterolab Gene Inheritance
lizard00 replied to parker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
okay, genetics is not my strength, BUT i'm a little confused also as to how your kids have the 0201 gene, but neither of you do? but yes, one parent has the combination gene that predisposes to celiac, along with 2 children. it should also be noted that we do have a few diagnosed celiacs with dbl dq1, and dq3 as well. dq2 and dq8 are the most widely... -
I would really hope it's not the exception, but I can only speak from my experiences. I don't know what the NDs know, but the patients thought they could eat a corner of a piece of cake here, or a donut bite there, or as long as it's not too much... Glad your is knowledgeable though, because I think they bring a great approach to healthcare.

ARCHIVED Low Serum Iga
lizard00 replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Maybe it's something you could pursue in the future, maybe when she's older and needs proof that she needs to stick to the gluten-free diet. You could always do it now, (putting the Enterolab discussion aside... ( )) through Enterolab. Their genetic results are not the hot topic with them; the downside is that they don't test for the entire chain. Or ask... -
ARCHIVED Please Help With Results ?
lizard00 replied to magicchance's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, your GI needs to cough those up. Legally, he cannot keep them from you. Doctor to doctor is another thing, but you have a right to see your medical records. Go get 'em!
