Latest Celiac Disease News & Research:

My asthma this winter is sooo much better than it was last year. Last year, I was using Serevent daily, and using my albuterol way more than I should. I haven't had my inhaler refilled in probably a year because I haven't had to. I can't swear that the celiac made my asthma worse, and I still have attacks occasionally, but it's much better.

You know I'm going to try that baking soda trick. I often wonder if I have low HCL. Thanks for posting!

ARCHIVED Which Formula Is gluten-free?
lizard00 replied to mandigirl1's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I breast fed too, so I can't help you on the formula and allergen situation... BUT... If you do end up doing formula, don't let people tell you to put cereal into the formula to make them sleep, fill them up, etc. That is introducing cereals too soon, and it's too thick and babies can choke on it. My ped told us around 5 or 6 months to start introducing... -
And now, when you see it, it will LOOK like poison to you. Which is really helpful, especially if everyone around you is eating it. It's great when you get to that point. Congratulations!

ARCHIVED How Long Til I Feel Better?
lizard00 replied to swbailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I started taking Digest Gold a few days ago. I read about Amylase deficiency and OMG, it was me on paper. Freaked me out a little. I started them Sat night, and then had some flavored coffee for 4 mornings in a row that I think has gluten in it, so I can't really say if it's helping or not. I was feeling progressively worse until yesterday when I just fell... -
ARCHIVED Dying For Pizza....
lizard00 replied to swbailey's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use Carol Fenster's recipe with her flour mixture. It's a combination of sorghum, potato and tapioca starches. It's SO good!! Chewy, a little crispy, all around YUM! I really didn't think I'd ever have pizza crust like that again. And YES, I agree with jnbunnie. I refuse to buy another Wellshire Farms product. Please read the link. -
ARCHIVED Getting Kids Tested
lizard00 replied to angelschick's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I had my son tested in Sept. My ped was totally on board, even when I corrected him about a test. But seriously, he understood that somethings could be avoided with early diagnosis, and we both felt it was worth it. As it turned out, he is NOT IgA deficient (I am), and his tTg came back at 0. I was fine with negative, especially because he doesn't have... -
ARCHIVED Undigested Food
lizard00 replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I would agree with the chewing. My son is 3 1/2 and his poop looks like everyone else's. That was not the case pre-teeth. And he doesn't have any food intolerances (as of now! thank goodness). When he ate blueberries the first time it really freaked me out! -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Gene Inheritance
lizard00 replied to parker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So did Enterolab retest the family, or did they offer clarification on why there was a difference between parents not having the gene and children having it? Because I would imagine a retest would be better to clarify where the mistake was made. -
ARCHIVED Eating The Same Foods Every Day
lizard00 replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Not only does it increase your risk of developing an intolerance, it's not balanced. You are missing out on a lot of other nutrients that you would be getting from eating a variety of foods. You're getting the same things over and over again, besides you'll eventually burn out on it (it sounds like you already have). -
ARCHIVED Just Curious! But What Do You Eat For Breakfast?
lizard00 replied to TiredofTums's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just made a pizza that I'm going to have for breakfast. I am allergic to eggs, so the only "breakfast" type food is a breakfast sausage I found. But I put sun-dried tomatoes, olives, mushrooms and sausage with some goat cheese. It is REALLY good! I am also making some bread right now, so at least I'll have toast, and if I want to start off not to great... -
ARCHIVED Meat
lizard00 replied to mysecretcurse's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Red meat can also be hard to digest, especially if you haven't eaten meat for a long time, or ever. But, I also find that everything makes me sick if I have been glutened... so I just eat because I know I have to. If you find that red meat bothers you again (not coming off of gluten), you could try a hydrochloric acid supplement to help with digestion... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Get A Test Done But Im Worried ...
lizard00 replied to mr. moore's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
False negatives are not uncommon, I am in that category. In fact, my doctor told me that I could be half dead and still not test positive on a celiac panel, even though I do have it. No doctor can argue with positive dietary results. -
ARCHIVED Just Found Out - Little Bro Has A Brain Tumor
lizard00 replied to ShayFL's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
So sorry to hear that Shay!! I hope that the outlook is promising and that your brother recovers speedily! -
ARCHIVED Industrial Uses Of Wheat
lizard00 replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can definitely make yourself crazy by analyzing stuff such as this and worrying about it. I could, anyway. I don't know what to make of it, but it's pretty eye opening to say the least. However, you cannot live your life in fear or in a bubble... (although sometimes I wish I could live in a bubble ) -
ARCHIVED How Long Til I Feel Better?
lizard00 replied to swbailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I felt better immediately, too. But then about a month later ended up pretty bad off for a week or so, then have gotten better from there. The fatigue was the last thing that went, my afternoon naps stopped somewhere around late spring/early summer. Your body needs rest, healing itself is a pretty big job. So, let it rest. I'm a little over a year gluten... -
ARCHIVED Wellshire Farms Gluten Free Products
lizard00 replied to bear6954's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I read that article a week or so ago and was totally freaked out by it. I have bought their chicken breakfast sausage before, but now I refuse to buy any of their products. I'm getting to the point where I am truly making everything from scratch in my kitchen. I've never eaten a lot of gluten free processed foods, but there were a few convenience foods. I... -
I have found success in opening my pictures in paint, and then making the picture smaller from there. I haven't had much success in cropping them. I'm sure there's an easier way, but I have a tendency to do things that hard way... It works though.

ARCHIVED Trader Joes Rice Milk
lizard00 replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use this 95% of the time. (The other time is when I run out and I don't want to go to TJ's just for milk) I'm pretty sensitive, and it's never once bothered me. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Sugar Cravings?
lizard00 replied to whitball's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's a pretty tough slap to reality, isn't it!! I did the same thing when it hit me too. -
ARCHIVED Food Allergy Test Results
lizard00 replied to LynziMarie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That is not all that uncommon. Some reactions can take up to a day or two. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Sugar Cravings?
lizard00 replied to whitball's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm doing a sugar fast right now. Today is the end of day 4. It's gotten much easier. The first two days I craved sugar really bad. Once you turn on the sugar receptors, your body starts to crave sugar. Anyway, the first few days are pretty rough, but I'm definitely feeling better. For me I don't think it has to do with being gluten free, I've always been... -
I don't know, the pizza I made over the weekend was better than Papa Johns to me. (Maybe I should mention that I never liked Papa Johns! ) You are not alone, we all had to go through this. But committing to it and absolutely not cheating is really the only way you are going to be well and stay well, whether you have symptoms or not.

ARCHIVED Come On Already. (a Long Post, Sorry)
lizard00 replied to LynziMarie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would also say THYROID. If it was borderline, perhaps that should have been pursued more. So, have the doctors ran a celiac panel on you? If you said in one of your posts, I apologize. I just read this one and didn't see it. Because I read your other post about allergies... and not being allergic doesn't mean that you don't have celiac. And like... -
ARCHIVED Can You Just Substitute?
lizard00 replied to clnewberry1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
To thicken soups or to make gravies, I like to use potato starch. Pretty good consistency, but it really is a matter of preference. Cornstarch would do just about the same thing, it's a matter of preference and what you have on hand. As Riceguy said, it gets trickier when you are baking.
