  1. My MIL doesn't get it either. We were at the beach about 6 weeks ago, and I told her I couldn't eat something. She said, "But you're on vacation." Right. Cause my immune system goes on vacation, too!! I can't believe I didn't know that!
  2. You have to have a sense of humor to get through some of these days! If your house becomes gluten free, I'll bet you'll see improvement with his issues, too!
  3. I'm in Raleigh, but grew up in Suffolk. There's a great store in VAB called Navan Foods (you probably already know about it) on Holland Rd. They have a lot of information about the Tidewater Celiac Support Group, plus a lot of great food choices.
  4. Depends how much you want to spend, but there is an exceptional "fine dining" Mexican restaurant here in Raleigh called Jibarra. They don't have a gluten free menu, but the chef is very up and up on what's gluten-free or not as pretty much everything is made in his kitchen. It's different from what most people's expectation of mexican is though. Their...
  5. Those could be mysterious. Happygirl is right, but there is the slight possiblity that they contain barley. My other thought is that the spice extract could contain MSG, which makes me sick. Or that. I tried those once, couldn't get past the chemical smell of them from the sulfur dioxide. I ended up throwing them away, they literally burned...
  6. Thanks Lisa My doc wanted to do a pill cam on me... unfortunately he says that insurance, at this point, requires an endoscopy first. To make sure they're not running an unnecessary test. So they'd rather pay twice... go figure that one!
  7. I, too, thought your advice was very well put. I was actually thinking the same thing. When people see you cave in because it's easy, or because you are concerned about what they're thinking, I think it's less likely that they'll take you seriously. If you have the attitude of "this is what it is, I can't change it, I have to deal with it", then people are...
  8. I, too, found that dairy is a problem with me. Gluten was two thirds of the problem. But it took me a little while to realize that my sinus pressure, reflux, and residual headaches were caused by dairy. My doc just says that if it bothers me to stay away from it, as he doesn't really suggest the lactose intolerance test. The part of the villi that produces...
  9. those sound sooo good!! i am a sucker for spring rolls. what would we do without you collette? i have searched your recipes many times!!
  10. Welcome to the forum!! I think your doctor is one of the good ones. He is exactly right, you are pretty sick but just don't feel it. Wait until your migraines and depression improve... I didn't realize how sick I was until I felt better. Now, I look back at myself a year ago, and wonder how I made it through the day, everyday. Please feel free to...
  11. It sounds like an allergy to me, too. The thing about allergies that really stinks, is that you can develop allergies anytime. I am not sure if I'm allergic to cow's milk, or intolerant or what, but I've often though allergic because when I eat dairy, I get sinus pressure/headache, my ears hurt too, and my face usually breaks out within a few days. It also...
  12. They're part of the same group as Outback.... it's nice to have a few safe places to eat!
  13. Welcome!! It's great to have another volunteer. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!!
  14. That explains why I don't like Hershey's. And I NEVER liked those Kissable things... they tasted like chemicals to me. It's very sad though #1 that the majority of people either don't know #2 don't care.
  15. I use it in all of my baking, and I can't tell a difference. Except that I don't feel sick from eating eggs You could also try applesauce or banana (or I have a recipe that uses both!)
  16. I am so sorry you aren't feeling well. I have finally figured it out and gotten it down to no dairy, no eggs. I'm allergic to egg whites (that one actually showed up with testing). Dairy will sometimes give me a mild gluten reaction, sometimes not.... immediately anyway. But it catches up with me within 3 days. Basically, it irritates my GI tract, and EVERYTHING...
  17. Testing in children is pretty inconclusive, ESPECIALLY before the age of 2. Largely because they just haven't had enough time to produce the amount of antibodies that would be necessary to show up on a test. If you want to have her retested, her chances of a more accurate test have improved, but the test itself is just not as accurate as we all would like...
  18. I have a MIL who doesn't quite get that if it says "whole grain" and it's in a grocery store, it's a given that I can't eat it. But, so far it's just me, not my son. However, if it ever does come to my son being on a gluten-free diet, here would be the rule: He is our child. We have decided this. I'm not asking you to like it, but if your relationship...
  19. My IgA was under range. The lab's range that did my bloodwork started at something around 85 or 90 for total IgA serum, and my number was 19. So, while I make some, it's low enough that it throws all the subsequent testing off. My GI told me that it was very important for them to test my son's IgG tTg in addition to the IgA based tests to make sure all the...
  20. Did your problems start after your surgery? Sometimes, surgery can trigger Celiac since it's pretty traumatic to the body. And many of the tests are calibrated to be positive when damage is severe. Could be that you are not at the severe point yet (with only 9 months of symptoms). Get a copy of your results and post them here. Many eyes are good, and sometimes...
  21. Was her total IgA serum within range? I make very little IgA and therefore all of the IgA based tests came out negative. Unfortunately, my PA didn't know better and thinks that you always carry the anitbody for gluten in your blood. So, my dx was dietary rxn and genetics. But, a number that high out of range would def be worth looking into.
  22. Are we related? LOL I get a headache, sinus pressure and stomach pain. Breaks my face out too. It was a very sad day for me when I realized that I needed to avoid dairy. I even asked my doctor to tell me it was damaging to me, like gluten. Dairy has been really hard for me, but I feel so much better without it. But I have to tell myself everyday not to...
  23. I have two of the 0201. I have noticed that we are the minority also. Off to get my son tested today, as it's certain he has one copy of the gene. So, I'm still learning about genetics, and trying to get the punnet squares out the brain dust... I know that both of my parents have at least one gene because I have both. For this specific gene, does it mean...
  24. My GP sent me to a GI who then ordered the test through Prometheus. I've never heard of that particular lab either, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Enterolab, as I have heard, (and hopefully, someone else will jump in to clarify) only tests for half of the gene chain, so it's not totally complete. The question is would she accept Enterolab...
  25. OK guys... I decided to get my 3 yr old tested for Celiac. I KNOW that he has at least one DQ2 gene, since I am double. I battled this because I don't want to live my life in paranoia, and diagnosing every sort of problem as Celiac, but I decided that I would be remiss as a parent not to have him tested. I don't want to find out 2 or 3 yrs down the road...
