ARCHIVED Seen A Rheumatologist...
Takala replied to num1habsfan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Aye yup. They're clueless. Been there, done that, didn't even get the tee shirt. When you go back tell him you met somebody that always tries to get only 5 to 6 hours of sleep when she's going to do something physical the next day, and needs to wake up looser than normal. When Clueless acts horrified, tell him that's what real long term sero negative... -
What an outrageously condescending post. No, I am quite aware of what the difference is between an optometrist, who does eye exams for glasses or contact lenses, and an OPTHAMOLOGIST, who is a medical doctor who specializes in the diseases and treatments of the eyes. The culprit was an alleged OPTHAMOLOGIST who could not be bothered to do a medical...

ARCHIVED Learning To Live With Girl Friend's Celiac
Takala replied to harrisburg's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am not a "super sensitive" person, I'm gluten intolerant. I feel very fortunate that I have been married for a very long time to a very caring person. We are a bit opposite, he likes to plan things way ahead of time, I'm a bit more spontaneous. For example, if we are driving somewhere, the first thing he says in the car is, which route are we taking... -
How much trouble do I get into for stating, based on my experiences with the same HMO, that the above reads like a fantasy that has no basis in reality ? Kaiser can say they "offer" these services but they don't actually provide them. The person you call on the phone is not a nurse, and may not speak your language intelligibly enough to be understood...

I can control it with this. That and I have a routine I learned in physical therapy. The damage is done, but at least I'm not creating new damage. Well, unless I do something sort of brash, stupid, and fun. And I don't flare much anymore, unless I either ingest gluten or in the fall, when the weather starts getting really crummy when the rainy season...

ARCHIVED An Amazing Collection Of Recipes
Takala replied to Jestgar's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh... my.... gosh. Wow. You all have to go look at that. Might want to add the American English word for gram ( besan) flour is chickpeas or garbanzo beans, in the recipes. -
Self diagnosed in my mid- late 40's after forcing the neurologist's office to give me copies of some test results. Had also been doing very intensive internet research after reading a random comment on a unrelated board about how somebody's sister's sjogren's always flared up after she blew her diet. Hit the google and never looked back. I had previously...

ARCHIVED More General Celiac Questions
Takala replied to kaiess's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
1. Normal life span/ Yes 2. Cause pain if gluten free/No 3. Damage if sticks to diet/No We're actually very lucky. This is one of the very, very few diseases that just avoiding the one class of grains can actually stop the auto immune reaction. There might be other food intolerances, or allergies, or other diseases that an individual develops that... -
ARCHIVED Rice Krispy Treats
Takala replied to flagbabyds's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
One can use gluten free rice cakes such as Lundberg's , crumbled up, in place of puffed rice cereal if you cannot find gluten free kinds easily. Also, popcorn would work. You could also mix gluten-free chocolate chips or m&m candies (American, check label, Canadian may not be gluten-free) into it. I think I must go lie down now after reading these recipes... -
Who wants to be the first to tell her to replace the toaster ? And the lasagne pan for the next one that's made without the wheat in it ? And to check out her lipstick ingredients ? I guess I just volunteered. Your mind will quit with the jackrabbiting around once you get your exposure to hidden gluten down and under control. ...

ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Having Guests?
Takala replied to nw0528's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My house, my rules, too. I suggest you find a gluten free bakery or start experimenting now with baking, (there's a lot of good pre mixes if you're not into it ) if anyone has to eat cake together. The language barrier is no excuse. Somebody (dear spouse) has to explain it to them that all wheat products make you very sick. This does not mean... -
Avoid Kaiser at all costs. I say this as an ex Kaiser user. I have the form of gluten intolerance that manifests as neurological symptoms and I have a secondary auto immune problem disease because of it, and I've got some really bad x rays and a past history of kidney problems to prove it. I'd rather see my dog's veterinarian than attempt to get...

ARCHIVED Nestle's Hot Chocolate
Takala replied to JoeB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
________________ Then why change the label ? From a legal standpoint, if they do not label the package "gluten free" they don't have to make it that way, be consistent from batch to batch, nor do they have to guarantee that the item is that way. It says the consumer must take the initiative to contact them repeatedly, and then rely on verbal... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Handle "processed On The Same Line As" Food Products?
Takala replied to jmjsmomma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For myself, if I were cooking it, I'd stick to Auntie Takala's home seasoned rice. If I were serving it to somebody else, (adult) who had to be gluten free, I'd give them plain rice and let them do with it what they wanted, individual reactions vary so much. Sometimes I eat products produced on lines that are "also used to manufacture tree nuts... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Explain, I Am New At This.
Takala replied to jenn03's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here is a discussion thread from last October that should help you because it has a lot of links: Genetics Question, Oct 23 2008 -
Raley's/Bel Air supermarket chain has a large gluten free selection in their Natural Foods aisles. They have markets in Antioch, Pittsburg, Oakley, Brentwood, and many other towns in Northern CA. Whole Foods Market, which is a huge organic chain, but pricier, $, also has a store in Walnut Creek. List of Whole Foods in CA Open Original Shared Link I...

ARCHIVED New Here - Sad And Overwhelmed
Takala replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're really a foodie you may end up enjoying this as you discover that gluten free eating is better than mass produced fast food, and as you find all the different sources of gluten free carbohydrates that can be prepared in tasty ways. Of course, right now you may want to just smack me for saying that, but try to think of the best possible outcome... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Has A Few Questions
Takala replied to Redheadmom116's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I believe the jury is still out on that, as all of us have reacted at some point to a listed ingredient that was supposed to be perfectly safe. I don't go on what anything looks like, just my reaction to it in a specific product, combined with research into what the item could possibly be made of, where it could have come from or traveled through, and what... -
Oh, dear. I'm sorry you feel crummy. What did you eat ? Sometimes people do not react well to gluten free substitute foods well until they figure out what agrees with them. Or, they discover they also need to give up dairy on either a temporary or permanent basis, they may be able to reintroduce it later if it is low lactose, like in a gluten...

ARCHIVED Newbie Has A Few Questions
Takala replied to Redheadmom116's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What was in the shortcake? If it were an allegedly gluten free "shortcake," then it may have contained an alternate gluten-free ingredient that does not agree with your system, that you don't know about yet. I can tolerate the baked goods I make, but some commercially prepared alleged gluten-free baked items hit me all wrong. If it were a home... -
ARCHIVED Potential Cure Getting Closer?
Takala replied to Ryan T's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't need to be "cured" of anything, but the food manufacturing and preparation industry needs to be able to respond to consumer needs other than prompting the Pharma industry to make another pill for their sloppiness and continued use of "mystery" ingredients source from "mystery" manufacturers somewhere on the planet. Pharma research is a huge cash... -
ARCHIVED Flat Biscuits
Takala replied to Twisted Spoon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I looked up the ingredient list on the Arrowhead Mills Gluten Free all purpose baking mix, and it's: " Ingredients: organic whole grain brown rice flour, organic potato starch, tapioca starch flour, baking powder (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, corn starch), fava bean flour, sea salt. ARCHIVED New To celiac disease- Please Point Me...
Takala replied to azagave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi and welcome. You will need to avoid wheat, rye, barley proteins, as all of them can cause a reaction to those sensitive to gluten. Many people need to also avoid oats, not only because of cross contamination, but in some people, oat proteins set off a reaction, others can eventually eat them. Other culprits are lactose in dairy milk (this may go away... -
ARCHIVED Friend's Husband Has Wheat Allergy.
Takala replied to Roda's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was supposedly allergic to an incredible number of foods when they skin tested me as a child about 3 decades ago, but after going off of them with no difference (and none of the supposed allergens were wheat) I started eating them again. Changing my diet to avoiding the wheat family back in 2003 also cut down the number of "unknown" or mystery allergy...
