  1. I am truly sorry you have been having such a stressful time in your life. Yes, definitely emotional and/or physical stress can be a celiac trigger. While the gene is a hereditary thing, the actual development of the disease requires a trigger to set it in motion, That is like saying that a gun is not a deadly weapon unless the trigger is pulled. Many...

If you have not yet had blood work done to confirm the celiac diagnosis you should do so as soon as possible, like tomorrow!! It sounds like you have already been mostly gluten free for three weeks and the antibodies disappear from the blood stream quite quickly in the absence of "normal" amounts of gluten. Same goes for the endoscopy with biopsy if your...
  3. Lots of doctors tell their patients that if you are "only" gluten intolerant you don't hae to be as careful with the diet as if you are celiac. This is really not true. You should be just as strict regardless. First off, your test results could be a false negative - thre is a 20% error rate (on the negative side, not positive) in both blood and biopsy...
  4. Welcome to the forum, Sanjoseguy. I used to live in San Jose I assume you mean CA and not Costa Rica. In my blood nutrient testing after going gluten free, I showed up with pernicious anemia. Low B12, low folate, high MCV (size of red blood cells). My MCV had been high for a long time, but "just a little bit high, not enough to worry about" and...
  5. I am sorry you are going through this, Roda, and unfortunately I don't have any solid answers for you because I am trying to learn about it myself I have been taking diuretics for the last 30 years, but for most of that time they were potassium-sparing diuretics, meaning I did not have to supplement potassium. Then they started switching me back and forth...
  6. From what I have been reading in the last couple of days, it is important to keep all your electrolytes (minerals) in balance to keep the heart functioning properly. That means keeping sufficient levels of magnesium in balance with potassium levels, and possibly adding some taurine too. It is a complex thing - you can't really throw just some potassium...

  8. Does she reject peanut butter, too? If you could get her to eat that it would be another source of protein for her.
  9. Hi and welcome. Your tTG score is very definitely elevated. Did the doctor run any of the other celiac tests and does he plan to send you to a GI for an endoscopy with biopsy to confirm the results as celiac disease? While that is the most likely cause, there are other things that can cause an elevated tTG. As for the diverticulosis, that can be present...
  10. If you were overreacting, there wouldn't be a lot of reason for many of our posters to be here. Unfortunately, this seems to be the last port of call before you check in your sanity when dealing with the medical profession. If it makes sense to you, then it's wrong to them. If it's bleeedingly obvious, then it's obscure to them; if you are slowly dying...
  11. Happily, it gets harder all the time
  12. Are we really still fighting this battle, that you have to have the 'appearance' of being severely malnourished to be celiac? Does the medical profession still yet not understand that you can be overweight and malnourished at the same time? That the body that is not receiving the right nutrients hangs on to every nutrient it can get because it perceives...
  13. The three to four slices of bread or equivalent is the amount to eat every day for the next two weeks. You must have enough gluten in your system to produce the antibodies that the tests measure. If you skimp on the gluten you will be wasting your time. I know it is not pleasant, but if the testing is important it is important to do it right.
  14. There seem to be as many different opinions about coooking oils as there are articles, books and studies done on them. Here is one article that purports to give the smoke point of all the various cooking oils and makes recommendations: Open Original Shared Link
  15. Last night hubs made crockpot whole chicken legs with garlic, onions, sultanas (O..K., yellow raisins), ginger, dried apricots. cranberries, chicken stock and a 'mystery' ingredient which I failed to detect. I know it wasn't citrus, because it couldn't be but maybe a dash of some spirits? Darned good, anyway.
  16. That's funny, bananakins! They got to you early and brainwashed you. My brain must be very muddy by now, having never been washed of all that sludge and fuzzy thinking that tells me that that stuff is inedible. "Acquired" taste, indeed. Now, scotch is an acquired taste for some people Sorry for hijacking this thread, peeps. Resume your normal programming...
  17. HaHaHa!! Was just reading in the paper today that Kiwis might have to start eating Vegemite instead of Marmite, because the Sanitarium plant in Christchurch where the Marmite was made is in the "fall" zone of an earthquake damaged building which is to be demolished, and they won't be able to produce any Marmite until July As if that bothers me Can't...
  18. Dontcha use a wine bottle? (Preferable red or sauv. blanc - they're generally longer )
  19. I have an Aussie-made toaster (well, it's probably made in Korea but we get it from Oz) and it has so many fail-safe features that you would think it would be impossible to screw up. Lets you raise the bread and check it, has "a bit more" button if it comes out underdone, "gently" lowers the bread for you, beeps when it's done, does not send itoast flying...
  20. I have been reading through your posts since refractory sprue first came up and I see you were recently scheduled for a doctor's visit. How did that go and what suggestions did he have as to how to proceed? What were the results of your genetic testing? The thought came to mind as to what other verification of your endoscopic findings have been done...
  21. TTG, IgA gliadin Abs I have never seen it written quite that way before, but the best guess is that you were tested for tissue transglutaminase IgA antibodies.
  22. Well, yes, I think they are all boys who have never really grown up Although I would say it takes some meatballs to do that. The skipper of our Kiwi America's Cup team was smart enough to jump off the boat before they left the gulf That's all right, though - he was supposed to But our backup helmsman is on board Camper. Before I went to bed last...
  23. Just watched (on TV) the Volvo Ocean Race fleet set sail out of Auckland, heading for the Southern Ocean, sailing through mountainous seas, dodging icebergs while tearing along at 30 knots in roaring gales to round Cape Horn and hopefully make it in one piece to Brazil in four weeks' time And all the time freezing cold, snatching two hours' sleep here and...
  24. I know that for me it is a delicate juggling act to stay well. I was always prone to UTI's before gluten free. After exhausting all other meds for my psoriatic arthritis I am on Humira, an immunosuppressant.so I have to stop taking it anytime I get an infection of any kind so I can heal. I am prone to cellulitis in my legs because of another medical problem...
  25. With a little trial and error, you may find out that you can still eat some dairy - those in which the lactose has been extracted or mostly digested by enzymes and cultures alrelaldy, such as yogurt, hard cheeses, butter. Those which should be scrupulously avoided are milk, cream, ice cream, forzen yogurt (not really yogurt). Some people are able to get...
