Oh, I like that idea - the lotion i've been using to reduce shaving (and i need all the help I can get) has oat on the label in the store (tho not on the bottle i have - which i probaby bought on clearance when they were switching lol). I was really not wanting to quit using it, but that makes sense - if its only on my legs once a day, thats manageable ...

I've never liked any french onion soup from a can because I grew up on my mother's home-made soup: Peel and slice onions to make about 4 cups Saute in about 1/4 cup margerine Once heated, turn heat low and cover, and cook about 30 minutes. Add 5 cups of stock (I prefer chicken, but beef is traditional), bring to a boil and simmer about 30 minutes Taste...

ARCHIVED Chicken
dbmamaz replied to dbmamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the laugh, I needed that!! My husband has been ok so far with the changes but i've taken it slowly. He said to me yesterday, even, that he would not be ok with me arbitrarily saying, No bread in the house. Also, both he and my teen daughter are pretty aggressive about not eating my wierd foods - not tasting my pasta or other altered... -
ARCHIVED Pamela's Baking Mix For Cookies
dbmamaz replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What about the spectrum coconut oil shortening? lots of folks swear by it - i'm still using crisco, which switched to non-hydrogenated some time here . .. . -
ARCHIVED Chicken
dbmamaz replied to dbmamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
First of all, thanks for the responses Yeah, I've really been wondering about cc in my own kitchen . . . i havent used wheat flour to cook w at all in at least 2 months, but i'm handling gluten all the time. I was starting to get such raw hands, I got tired of washing my hands with soap every time i touched anything. Often when everyone is putting togehter... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know...
dbmamaz replied to ilove(d)wheat's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not only is D after eating wheat/barley a symptom of celiac, so is C, and so is anxiety! However, be warned that lots of folks here had negative test results, but still felt better from eliminating gluten. Dont start yet, as your doctor may want to do a biopsy and you should keep eating gluten until after the biopsy. But even if the tests come back... -
I havent tried it, but you could check this: Open Original Shared Link Early on in the text, she includes a link to another recipe its based on, too.

ARCHIVED Pamela's Baking Mix For Cookies
dbmamaz replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have the Baking Classics, too, its the only gluten-free book i've bought so far - i'm kinda limited since I cant do dairy either. However, I did the chocolate chip cookies, with the flour mail-ordered from amazon (ouch, shipping costs more than the flour), and I LOVED them - I swear I've never enjoyed a cookie so much! i always kinda had a distaste for... -
The last few times I've made chicken, I think I've felt worse afterwards. I'm wondering, becuase almost all chickens these days say that they have been injected with broth or something - have any of you actually called companies about their chicken being gluten-free? Has anyone had any bad experience with chicken? Or, conversely, have you found that most...

ARCHIVED Gluten Has Now Affected My Marriage
dbmamaz replied to MrMark's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ok, lots of responses, but I just have to add mine! I was self-dx'd, and had the test 6 weeks after I went off of both dairy and gluten, and the test was negative. Still, i feel so much better, I'm not going back. I have a huband who is so attached to his bread he says he would NEVER agree to testing, a teen girl full of attitude, an 11 yo boy on heavy... -
ARCHIVED Low Iron And Recovery Without Supplements?
dbmamaz replied to lightening16's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I dont know if it would help you or not, but when I was pregnant and couldnt tolerate prenatal vitamins, my midwife put me on yellowdock capsules. its an herb which doesnt contain iron, but helps you absorb iron. -
ARCHIVED Calling All Snack Recipes!
dbmamaz replied to loco-ladi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh, SO hoping that I eventually become dairy-tolerant so I can make these . . . the open box of cheez-its in my pantry has begun tormenting me . . . I wisht the kids would eat them up faster and stop asking for them! -
You just have to read the labels. Some broths are thickened with wheat starch. I find that the name-brand broths are usually safer, but you always have to read the labels . . . there's a whole thread here (recently, at least) about the wierdest things that you've been glutened from, and broth was way up there.

ARCHIVED Newbie With Some Questions
dbmamaz replied to IMWalt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure i'm celiac either (tho i rather suspect I am) and I had a negative blood test after being off of wheat for 6 weeks. My stomach symptoms cleared up within 5 days for sure, except a few other foods were still tripping me up. My headaches (which i didnt imagine were related) cleared up a few weeks later, and then my energy started increasing too... -
ARCHIVED New Update On Annika
dbmamaz replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just wanted to suggest mothers milk tea or something similar for milk supply, and make sure you're still taking a (allergy-free) multivitamin. Is she nursing any less often, being so miserable? Also, sorry if you've already posted this, but if her rash is clearing up (due to your diet, or medication or what?), then what are the other symptoms you're trying... -
ARCHIVED Why Are Parents So Stubborn?
dbmamaz replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There have been other posts about frustrating families . . . one about her daughter eating gluten and cc'ing her granddaughter and not wanting to hear about it - talk about frustrating, watching ur daughter basically giving ur grandchild gluten! My chronically ill sister, when I mentioned gluten, said she quit wheat already. THen she said, yeah, I realized... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Not Starting Until Mid 40's?
dbmamaz replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Even if you dont have celiac, you could still have gluten sensitivity. You could still take a 2 week break from gluten and see if you feel any better - thats what you really want, right, to feel better, not just get a doctor give you a name for your suffering! -
ARCHIVED Ok Not Eating Vitamins While Pregnant
dbmamaz replied to Yenni's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I didnt see this post b4, but I had a really hard time tolerating multivitamins when pregnant, including the chewables. I ended up taking B12 and folic acid, calcium, and yellowdock capsules instead of iron. My midwife said that yellowdock helps you absorb the iron you are already consuming. My last 2 pregnancies, I was also told to drink a pregnancy tea... -
ARCHIVED Help My Son's Broken Spirit
dbmamaz replied to nattrail's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know what you mean about IEP dragging its feet - after several child study meetings, I said I was sending my son to the gifted program in another school, and the principal looked overjoyed and said that they can do the evaluation process. I requested evaluation as soon as I got there, but they only scheduled them 1 or 2 times per month, and they wanted... -
ARCHIVED Help My Son's Broken Spirit
dbmamaz replied to nattrail's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow, that brought tears to my eyes . . . when my middle son was 4 he was still having accidents occasionally at daycare, and the teachers in the 4 yo class were absolutely not willing to deal with it, and he often got in trouble. He started just throwing away his underwear when it happenned - it was his idea - and I was always fine with it, because he was... -
ARCHIVED Is There Such A Thing? (crackers)
dbmamaz replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is a search feature in this forum, at the top, and you may want to do a search for cracker recipes - i did and I looked at 5 or 6, and 1 or 2 looked like you might be able to work with it. Some called for soy flour or nut flour, some didnt. But when you cant eat the most common substitute products, sometimes you just have to make your own. i managed... -
ARCHIVED What Can I Eat If I Cut Out Gluten, Dairy And Casein?!?!?
dbmamaz replied to LilyCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I actually quit gluten and dairy at the same time and it actually didnt bother me that much. Well, the first thing I had to do was go buy some Tings, which are cheese-free cheese curls made from corn. Recently I also went off of rice and onions and hot pepper and ham so its gotten even tougher. But several of my existing family favorite meals were very... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free King Cake
dbmamaz replied to mama2two's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips

ARCHIVED Gluten Free King Cake
dbmamaz replied to mama2two's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My son just came home asking for Gluten-free Casein-free kings cake . . . i was at a loss. I've never had kings cake before, and it looks like its more like a pastry dough, like a danish. I'm not baking much at all right now since i'm off of rice, too, and tonight is crazy busy . . . so you just used something like a sweet roll? And made a cake ring out... -
BTW, when I was a vegitarian, I used to make soysage from scratch, from a recipe in the farm cookbook. It was funny because the main ingredient is the pulp left over from making soy milk, except I never liked soymilk, I only loved the soysage. The recipe does call for whole wheat flour, but I'm sure you could come up w a substitute for that pretty easily...
