  1. One thing that went away pretty rapidly after I gave up gluten, dairy and most carbs was my GERD and hernia. I wonder how many people would have been able to avoid surgery and have treated their stomach and gut issues quite successfully by doing that! Although GERD is commonly assumed to be due to too much stomach acid, in fact the reverse is true. The...
  2. Do you have problems with Candida or other yeasts? I have, for years, and I am convinced that it has a lot to do with the problem. Even on the diet it can take a while to get it under control, but I think that as we do, the mucous production will slow down. Mucous is the body's way of trying to protect itself from something. Maybe even just eating...
  3. The adrenals will be working overtime as the body fights the inflammation going on in the gut. I had sore adrenals for a long time - they still are a bit but nothing as bad as they were. The fact that they are still a bit sore suggests to me that I still have inflammation going on down there and still have a way to go before it is fully healed (the few...
  4. I still get it from time to time after eating certain things although I don't know what it is that is triggering it, but generally it is better. I hoped it would go after dropping dairy but it didn't seem to make an awful lot of difference, but I've stayed off most dairy anyway as it seems to give me C. Ironic really as my problem was D for years. Hopefully...
  5. If the milk has been heated to a high enough level to kill any stray rogue bacteria I fail to see where the mold would come from, unless it was stored without a lid or the container was dirty! Personally I have never had any problem with mold.
  6. I read this article in the Daily Mail today with growing horror. I have come across a lady on the internet with weird and frightening health issues that she believes are related to nanotechnology. As I keep saying - man meddles with what he does not know...............
  7. Pele just posted this article on the SCD thread about gut dysbiosis and its link to Celiac. Kind of makes me feel much better about banging on about the subject! Makes very interesting reading....... https://www.celiac.com/articles/21685/1/Mor...ease/Page1.html Thanks Roy for the article if you get to read this......
  8. Wow - thanks Pele! Kind of makes my banging on about rogue bacteria thing worth while. I will post that on the Gut bacteria thread too. Elaine was doing her research between the 60's and the 90's. At that time not enough was known about the benefits or detriment of different bacteria and even now, 20-odd years later we still know very little. The...
  9. It may not be the nightshade that is the problem, but the starch. Many of us cannot process carbs properly so instead of feeding us, the undigested carbs end up feeding rogue bacteria in the gut fomenting the vicious cycle of inflammation leading to things like leaky gut. I found with having Candida overgrowth that foods like bread and potatoes and other...
  10. Mmm. Mashed cauli with a sprinkling of natural bouillon powder, a good knob of butter and a drizzle of cream if tolerated. Delish. Roast chunky cut carrots, parsnips, zucchini and squash or sweet potato drizzled with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt - if you are tempted, throw in a few whole garlic corms too...........bake for 40 to 50 mins turning a...
  11. We have to remember that Elaine wasn't being fanatical about the diet just because she felt like it, she was fanatical because she knew that it worked best that way. I haven't been fanatical about it and I have paid the price. 9 months in and I am not as well as I should be by now. Yes, I have kept to the diet, but I have allowed illegal foods to creep...
  12. Hi Mia. What are the tests you have done to find out about the fructose malabsorption? Is this something you have worked out yourself by what response you get, or is it an actual test kit procedure?
  13. I think going too fast is a mistake a lot of us make. We think, because the diet is restricted we have to include everything on the diet, but in reality even some of those foods are best left until a later stage once the gut has started to heal. I know I have fallen into that trap. It would have been difficult for Elaine to specify what should happen when...
  14. Well, it depends where you are but I think that you would find it hard to find anyone who can test for intolerances. They do not show the same result as allergies, with a histamine response. Usually it is down to trial and error, finding out what is problematic. Many of us who have found that dropping gluten did not bring us the desired relief are now...
  15. Elaine suggests either grape juice or fresh unsweetened pure apple juice (the cloudy type), commonly known as 'cider' (not the alcoholic type!). Water, of course, and a few other well-diluted pure fruit juices (no sugar) - pineapple, tomato, V8, Orange, etc.). Personally I prefer to well dilute juices. They are very strong and acid if taken neat. I am...
  16. Others have asked this question. Some bacteria are avid carb feeders, others aren't. Most of the good bacteria will happily exist via the 'specific' carbs provided within the diet, the voracious beasties will die back as their 'food' the undigested carbs will no longer be available to them. Some don't cope with the yogurt immediately. It could be that...
  17. Have a look at the Specific Carbohydrate Diet thread - many who are Gluten intolerant don't get better just from dropping gluten because they have a problem digesting carbs in general, including corn. Most gluten-free foods are VERY high in other sources of carb, ironically, higher even than wheat/gluten based baked goods. We are following the SCD because...
  18. Mia - I was intrigued when you mentioned telling your doctor about the SCD and him going very quiet. Has he tried it himself since then?
  19. Hi 'K' (what's the K for? We are all pretty much on first name terms on here!), welcome to the thread. I think in a way that we may be getting a bit too worried about the temperature. Whilst 110 degrees may be the optimum, a little either way is not going to make a huge difference. If you live in a hot country, just leaving the yogurt out on the table...
  20. I have never had the flu shots either and I am supposed to have as I am diabetic. I will not go there. I never can see the point. The flu virus mutates and next year it will be a different virus to this year, so how can they possibly predict what virii will cause problems at any time? I agree totally that we should allow our bodies to build up immunity...
  21. What is it with men and yogurt? My husband is quite irrationally revolted by it and gets angry if I try and push him to have yogurt. He has the same phobia about cheese sauce, yet he will eat custard and cream without any problem. Perhaps he was forced to eat the stuff when a child or something - I haven't a clue, he won't say. I keep telling him how...
  22. Dawn, I think it is a 'man' thing to have to try and fix everything. My husband is like that - you know - the times you tell them about something that is bothering you and instead of giving you a hug which is what you really need, they have this tendency to give you a lecture on what you need to do about the situation (well, mine does anyway!) (and he wonders...
  23. I did a fast on Wednesday, well a sort of a fast. I didn't eat all day, just had some lemon water in the morning and drank water for the rest of the day until the evening when I had a small dinner. I didn't eat anything else after that. I had an herb tea yesterday morning and didn't eat again until lunch when I had a small lunch then a medium dinner in...
  24. Dawn - I used ordinary pumpkin in my pumpkin pie. Nicola's recipe lists butternut squash but you can use pumpkin if you have it. We seem to be able to get butternut most of the year in the stores here in the UK but we can only get pumpkin for a few weeks at this time of the year. I have never seen canned pumpkin here but that is 'illegal' anyway. April...
  25. Well I reckon that Nicola Devlin's Vanilla Pumpkin Pie could easily be converted to Pecan Pie. At the end of the day it is just a filling with Pecans on top and a crumb base - make the base out of ground hazelnuts and almond as she lists, top with a honey-sweetened (not too much) filling and add the pecans. Voila. Make your own and take it with you if...
