  1. The short answer Ken is that I don't know which bacteria is best and I am not sure that anyone does. Elaine Gottschall did say that it is better to confine to Lactobacillus types in general and avoid Bifidus strains. She did seem to do some research on it. I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that some seem to work for you better than...
  2. I would go as far as to suggest that most people who follow the SAD/SED will have gut dysbiosis to a greater or lesser degree. Most people suffer with gas and flatulence to a greater or lesser degree. Yeasts convert sugar into alcohol and a by-product of that is copious quantities of carbon dioxide (if you've ever made wine you'll know what I mean). The...
  3. Hear, hear. Absolutely totally agree with you on that one. If we end up replacing the high-carb, high-sugar gluten food with even higher-carb, higher-sugar gluten free, then it is no wonder that so many are not getting better. The only way to have any semblance of health is to eat food as near as possible to the way God made it. Any intervention by...
  4. Ah yes, but is it so abundant because their little guts are already out of balance? It depends whether the research was done on babies who are surrounded by the SAD or whether it was done on babies brought up in a natural unadulterated fresh foods with loads of yogurt environment. Just because it is abundant doesn't mean that is how it should be!
  5. I have just posted this on the SCD thread but feel that it fits this thread just as importantly. Very, very interesting little snippet I cut out of the paper today. Apparently there has been some research to show that women who take probiotics during pregnancy and who give them to their babies, halve the risk of their babies getting eczema. Even more...
  6. Very, very interesting little snippet I cut out of the paper today. Apparently there has been some research to show that women who take probiotics during pregnancy and who give them to their babies, halve the risk of their babies getting eczema. Even more interesting is that the research found that whilst Lactobacillus Rhamnosus worked well, bifidobacterium...
  7. I thought about a rice cooker and crock pot but the ones I have looked at don't tell you what temperature they sit at, just low, med and high, which means nothing! I don't want to go to the expense of buying one to end up finding it's no good. I have a feeling that the low temp on a crock pot is around 130 degrees C which would be much too warm. I just...
  8. So, those of you with heating pads, what are they? I am just looking at options - using the oven is ok but it doesn't keep the yogurt at an even temperature. I've seen a heating pad/mat for a pet's basket on Ebay but it is huge! I so wish I had a lovely warm airing cupboard like my Mum had............. I'm considering the litre sized electric yogurt...
  9. Just for information, I found this very interesting little article on Yogurt. Fascinating........... Open Original Shared Link
  10. I had to manage without eggs for a while as they affected me but after about 3 months I found that I could then tolerate them as long as they are well cooked - although I love runny yolks, they don't love me. I am hoping that eventually I will be able to tolerate those ok too.
  11. Well, I have been pretty good today. I did have a few small muffins for breakfast and lunch but at least they were SCD legal! I made them from Raman's book - the butternut squash ones and added some fruit - blueberries. blackberries and cherries for added texture. I made the mixture a bit wet and it could have done with a little more baking soda and another...
  12. Coo, I was reading your profile and looking at myself! Bad breath? I could be incarcerated for illegally producing poison gas! Do you wake up every morning with a mouth like the inside of a sewage pit??? It has to be down to bacterial activity. The little beggars are in there - all through my digestive tract quietly beavering away all night whilst I...
  13. I love the yogurt on its own with just some fruit. Originally I would just have it with blueberries and banana but now I can add some green grapes which is great. I used to put honey on it but prefer to avoid that at the moment until I can get the Candida/yeast under control. To be quite honest, I find that with the fruit it is perfectly sweet enough....
  14. Thanks for your compliment - at the end of the day we are all learning - and we are all trying to make sense of our health issues. For many of us there is no one out there fighting our corner so we have to figure it out for ourselves. Whilst we all suffer with different and varied issues, somewhere along the line we can but just hope that someone else...
  15. Just out of interest I emailed Fage who make Total Greek yogurt and this is the reply There are only 2 cultures within the yogurt but they seem to pretty good ones. The level of bacteria is not high but that is typical of commercial yogurts which is why Elaine recommends making it yourself as the long fermentation makes for a higher amount of bacteria...
  16. Quite probably! Elaine G (SCD) suggests avoiding certain legumes during the healing process as some of them are very high-carb which feeds the bacteria, especially in those of us whose guts are damaged to the point that we do not digest carbs properly. The undigested carbs feed them, not us! It kind of begs the question that was raised in Blazing Saddles...
  17. I have been on the SCD for around five months and can now cope with a little edam-type cheese. I finally managed to get hold of some cultured curd cheese last week so am having that as well as the yogurt. Dairy in general seems to cause C with me - ironic considering that D was my biggest problem for years. As long as I avoid milk and cream, I'm ok. ...
  18. My belief is that many of us have poor, very unbalanced gut flora with rogue bacteria and/or parasites. Some of them feed on the gluten and produce toxic by-products that contribute to our ill health. When we don't ingest gluten the bacteria and/or parasites become dormant within our gut. Eat gluten and they are woken up and start clamouring for the...
  19. My daughter has suffered with quite severe anxiety, panic and depression - I had her down as Bipolar at one point & she was even suicidal at times - in the pit one minute, bouncing off the walls at the next. She has, within the last year gone back on to St John's Wort on a pretty permanent basis. It deals with her problems a lot better and less drastically...
  20. I certainly believe that we do have genetic 'weaknesses', but am now convinced that constant consumption of 'dead' foods (and other body dysbiotic substances) actually exacerbates those weaknesses. The problem with Celiac is that so many are receiving their diagnosis but cannot figure out why after removing gluten they don't get better. This is why I...
  21. I just posted on another thread about being on the SCD permanently (Gluten Intolerance and Behavior section). We kind of have a mind-set problem. I think a lot feel that it is a bit of a punishment! We are drowning in mountains of rubbish that passes for food. We are absolutely surrounded by copious amounts of 'dead' food. It is everywhere we go, it...
  22. I'm what is generally considered to be a type 2 (although I have alternative feelings about that - I do wonder if types 1 and 2 aren't simply different progressions of the same disease. Some enter it rapidly, others more slowly, anyway, whatever, I too am on insulin) (My Mum was type 1, my Dad type 2, as was his mother, and as is his eldest sister and younger...
  23. Pele, just out of interest I emailed Body Ecology who run a similar diet to the SCD and uphold a lot of the work done by Natasha Campbell-McBride, about probiotics and dairy - this is the reply I received......... Logically the same would be true of yogurt as the bacteria are obviously grown in dairy to make that.
  24. I too have wondered about this. I often think that the word 'cure' is bandied about maybe a little too flippantly sometimes, however, I do think that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet can be an effective management for things like Celiac, especially where just avoiding gluten is not the answer to other health issues. Yes it works for Celiac because it removes...
  25. Yes, I make my yogurt with ordinary pasteurised milk. Although I would prefer raw I can't get hold of it. With the yogurt making process the milk has to be heated to virtually boiling anyway, which would negate the raw milk, to destroy any 'baddies' and the other strains are then introduced from the commercial yogurt or probiotic capsules. The lactobacillus...
