ARCHIVED Please Help, Starving To Death! Cant Eat Rice, Gluten, Eggs,
AliB replied to dizzygrinch's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes, check out the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) - it is gluten, dairy and starch free. There IS plenty to eat - just not the high-carb, high-sugar stuff which is what causes a lot of our health issues. I could not eat eggs initially, but within a few weeks of starting the SCD I could cope with them ok, as long as they were well-cooked, so runny omelet... -
ARCHIVED Coming To The Harsh Conclusion It's Most Likely Lyme...
AliB replied to castor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Whilst anyone can be bitten by a tick and be infected, not all ticks are carrying the bacteria. I can't help wondering if though there may be other sources of infection like say, improperly cooked meat. Not only are we targeted, but so are animals. The spirochaete bacteria are so minute that they can infect any area of the body. How do we know that we... -
ARCHIVED Still Not Diagnosed But Confused About Diet
AliB replied to needtobebetter's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You don't specify which foot the pains are in. Can you be any more specific about where the pains are and what the pain is like? You can tell a lot from the feet through reflexology. I used to get pains and itching in my feet when my digestion was bad, in areas that pointed to the colon (I don't get that any more since being on the SCD). If you Google... -
ARCHIVED Still Not Diagnosed But Confused About Diet
AliB replied to needtobebetter's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Those who know me on here also know that I am an advocate of the Specific Carbohydrate diet and a firm believer that many of our problems are caused by rogue bacteria and gut dysbiosis. Can I ask how old you are? I get the impression that you are quite young and to be having thin skin at your age is pretty rotten. Interestingly I just did a little... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hey everyone, I have just made my first jug of fresh coconut milk. It is gorgeous. Tastes like creamy milk. I was reading in the 'Gut and Psychology Syndrome' book that canned commercial coconut milk is often hydrogenated, rendering the fat into trans-fat and has been implicated in high cholesterol. She advocates using plenty of fresh coconut which contains... -
ARCHIVED Newbie To Scd- Need Some Pointers
AliB replied to Gina C.'s topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Gina. There is an active SCD thread on this section just a few down from your thread on the list - please feel free to post and ask anything. One of the original questions concerned 'legal' bacon and what is available in the US - it's worth reading through the thread as there is a lot of interesting info. You haven't logged where you are as we hail... -
ARCHIVED Coming To The Harsh Conclusion It's Most Likely Lyme...
AliB replied to castor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
When people have these kinds of symptoms then Lyme seems to be a possibility, but some have mentioned that they don't live anywhere near it. It is here in the UK but is not very problematic, yet there are a lot out there who still display with Lyme type illnesses. Lyme appears to be caused by any one of three kinds of Borrelia bacteria that can be transmitted... -
Have you checked to see if there is a stomach bug going around? Have you eaten anything that might have been contaminated with a stomach-bug inducing bacteria (uncooked meat, unwashed salad, etc.)? the fact that it has come out of the blue suggests that you have picked up something from somewhere.

ARCHIVED Coming To The Harsh Conclusion It's Most Likely Lyme...
AliB replied to castor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hmm. well, where to start...............as you are well aware, unless doctors have a definitive series of symptoms it is impossible for them to make a diagnosis. The problem there is that we are all unique. With certain diseases like, say, diabetes, the symptoms are easily pinpointed and most, if not all presenting their doctor with those symptoms will... -
I would think that wearing sunglasses must undoubtedly cause some restriction in the manufacture of vitamin D within the eyes. We must be VERY deficient in D as, not that we have much of one to start with, but we have had virtually no summer at all this year here in the UK. I am now working my way through the cod liver oil capsules and having mackerel...

ARCHIVED Coming To The Harsh Conclusion It's Most Likely Lyme...
AliB replied to castor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Could certainly be due to rogue bacteria in your gut - whether it is Lyme is obviously an unknown entity, but as that is caused by a bacteria then it all amounts pretty much to the same thing really. The type of symptoms we get pretty much seems to depend on the type of bacteria that is in our guts. I am pretty sure I don't have Lyme, but the symptoms... -
There are millions of people who work and live in the sun all day, every day, for the whole of their lives without any hint of cancer - there must be something else going on. As skin cancer is something that seems to be prevalent, yet again, amongst those who ingest the 'western' diet, you have to wonder if the high-carb, high-sugar doesn't unbalance our...

ARCHIVED Gut Imbalance And Dysbiosis Behind Everything.
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Whilst most in the States probably know of its existence, I have just found a copy of and have been reading 'Fast Food Nation'. Yuk and more yuk. Cows fed dead chickens and chickens fed dead cows - no wonder we are in such a mess. I picked up on one interesting little point though - in Holland cattle are transported carefully to limit the amount of stress... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Another book worth reading Susie - if you can find the time is Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell-McBride. She outlines how the poor gut flora situation gets passed on from mother to child. She is a great advocate of the SCD and how beneficial it is. The book is aimed mainly at childrens' health, both mental and physical, but is full of... -
That's interesting Ken. Apprently a Vit D deficiency may be behind diabetes - as I am diabetic I will be doing a bit more research on this. Thanks for the info.

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Susie I don't know that you would experience weight-loss on the SCD. I haven't and I wish I could! I do think that the SCD helps the body to settle to it's optimum weight level although it may fluctuate a little initially (anyone else had problems with weight loss on the SCD??). We are so programmed to assume that if we don't get enough carbs we... -
Even just ONE course of anti-biotics can radically alter the gut flora. Because AB's are impartial they will kill most bacteria, including, sadly, the good ones. That then opens up the gut to infestation by the survivors and those not touched by the AB's. The radical imbalance then starts off a chain of events that end up leading to a vicious cycle of...

ARCHIVED What If Going Gluten Free Isn't Enough?
AliB replied to emilyjean's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I too have intolerances to gluten and dairy. Back at the beginning I couldn't cope with eggs and most fruits except, funnily enough, blueberries and banana (better tolerated when eaten with yogurt)! Although I don't cope with commercial yogurt, I do cope with my own home-made long-fermented probiotic SCD legal yogurt and some fermented curd (cottage) cheese... -
ARCHIVED Gut Imbalance And Dysbiosis Behind Everything.
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Susie. I don't take probios per se but purely through the yogurt. I use Total Greek yogurt (the 100% not the low fat one as I prefer the creamier taste) which contains Acidophilus and Streptococcus thermophilus as a starter. As I eat this as part of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet it is good backup, but Elaine Gottschall did warn that any probios need... -

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
As far as I am aware, Elaine's daughter Judy is still very much alive. It is possible that she has supported a new book but whether she would digress from her Mum's work I'm not sure. Can you find out any more about it - who is writing it, etc.? Gut and Psychology Syndrome does support the SCD but as Matilda pointed out, that is already out - I have... -
Hi Jason. I also would suggest trying the SCD. Although your diet is very limited you may still be ingesting foods that are keeping the 'cycle' going. Many of us have problems with carbs in general, particularly sugar, as our guts lose the ability to produce the necessary enzymes due to the damage, and it may be that that is your problem - gluten is...

ARCHIVED Gut Imbalance And Dysbiosis Behind Everything.
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm not sure they aren't actually connected - after all bacteria lives everywhere on the body. Whilst the smell can be down to certain foods, like garlic for instance, it can also be down to bacteria. If we are eating foods that the bacteria react to then they also will give off 'whiffs'. Those 'eggy' BB's? Bacteria. Methane? Bacteria. Poop? Bacteria... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Can't quite figure out what you mean by the 'new book'. At the end of the day if it includes rice and potatoes it ain't the SCD! The whole point of removing those foods apparently is to allow the gut to heal. It might still work after a fashion but surely would take a lot longer as the starchy foods would be feeding the rogue bacteria. Can you find... -
ARCHIVED Gut Imbalance And Dysbiosis Behind Everything.
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
How do you use it Rachel? Does it not add extra salt to the body? For some years I have been using crystals. They work really well and although a little more expensive than deodorant last for ages, so work out considerably cheaper than the chemical stuff. The one I use currently was bought over 5 years ago and I still probably have another 2 or 3...
