ARCHIVED How Can I Show That I Take Notice
AliB replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good for you! Trouble with tests is that quite often they come back negative and the disease gets dismissed anyway even if the child of adult does actually have it, as doctors are not trained to see past the blood test! Sometimes both the blood test AND a biopsy comes back negative yet they still have it. The testing system is, as yet, still very basic... -
ARCHIVED Background Body Throbbing/ Heart Pounding
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, it's just a constant thing. I get little in the way of palpitations (and especially noticeably absent since going gluten-free and my gut has started to heal and digest properly) and am not aware of any arrhythmia, it is just that I am very aware of my heart/pulse, whatever. It is usually around 65 beats per min, give or take a bit, quite normal,... -
ARCHIVED Background Body Throbbing/ Heart Pounding
AliB posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
For the last five years or so I have had this awareness of my pulse/heart/throbbing sensation going on and I don't know why. During the day it doesn't really bother me but I notice it at night when I am trying to sleep. My blood pressure is ok, in fact I have stopped my medication as my BP has come down since going gluten-free in Jan and is sitting around... -
ARCHIVED Can You Be Gluten Intollerant And Still Have Malabsorption?
AliB replied to Krystens mummy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Me too, me too! I also would not be surprised if Celiac and GI aren't the same thing. Generally the blood tests and biopsies only show it up if there are gut issues. If they are not yet apparent then it is pretty obvious the tests would come back negative. Typical doctor for just dismissing it because the 'test' is 'negative'. A 100% totally reliable... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal Fatigue - How Long Does It Last?
AliB replied to WriterCat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for explaining that in greater detail - it is useful to know. I know gluten is a protein but I always think of it as a carb as it doesn't come without it! If I think of bread, cakes, cookies, etc., protein is not what comes to mind. LOL I am having to go low-carb as I have a problem processing them and always have had. My body doesn't digest... -

Going into Pediatrics sounds like a good idea to me - at least you would have a head start with kids who are Coeliac and perhaps be a bit more on the ball at recognising those in whom it hasn't yet been picked up by doctors who aren't so familiar with it. There's one way your parents will see that you are interested! I saw an article in the paper the... -
ARCHIVED I Have A Question About Eating Yogurt, Etc...
AliB replied to nikki2008's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Nikki. I've been gluten-free, dairy free, and off most carbs and sugar for two months now. My stomach still reacts a bit but it is a lot better now than it was. After I went gluten-free/DF, within 5 hours the pain stopped. Within a week most of the residual discomfort and bloating had gone, but I still had issues with other foods, mainly gluten... -
ARCHIVED Various Questions......
AliB replied to Swartzmj's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It often takes something to trigger the external symptoms off - it can be anything. Mine was a change of medication for my diabetes but for others it can be surgery, a trauma, an accident, well, anything and sometimes very little at all. I would suspect that your stomach problem was lurking in the background but it might have taken the 'binge' to set it... -

That's weird that there's no 'it' in Welsh. How on earth do they get around that one? It's funny when you are listening to Welsh and an odd 'English' word pops in. I can only assume there is no Welsh substitute for certain things! What do you hope to do when you have finished your education? Sorry, I am assuming you are still at school or college... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal Fatigue - How Long Does It Last?
AliB replied to WriterCat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I went gluten-free at the end of Jan. I realised pretty quick that it wasn't just gluten that was my problem so also dropped dairy and most carbs and sugar as well. I decided to cut right to the chase and cut out everything that could be hindering my recovery and so far it seems to be working. I had the gamut of weird symptoms for a few weeks, headaches... -
Funny, you know I hadn't thought about it but for years I have had an area on my back just inside my right shoulder-blade that would get extremely itchy. It would also feel slightly numb. It seems to have been better since I went gluten-free although I think I have had to get the back-scratcher out a couple times - maybe I was reacting to something I'd...

AliB replied to missnbagels's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It does seem as though you might have developed an intolerance to another food. That can happen. I see quite regularly on the forum where ones have said that they felt better for a while then started to get sick again. Sometimes we can be intolerant of not just Gluten but carbohydrates in general. when we go gluten-free we tend to try and compensate... -
ARCHIVED Teenage Daughter
AliB replied to bakingbarb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You just have to try and get through to her that ignoring this won't make it go away - it will just get worse. From what you have said I would think there is a very strong chance that she is Celiac. As you know, she just can't ignore this. Young people have this 'live for today and I'll worry about the future when it happens' attitude, but talk to anyone... -
If you are fairly confident that you are not getting gluten from any source, and you are only feeling ill when you eat foods other than fruit, it is likely that something else in your diet is also affecting you. I would suggest that you do an elimination diet. You know that you are ok with fruit, so just eat that for a day or two then gradually introduce...

I found that I couldn't tolerate foods with eggs in after my digestion collapsed and I went gluten-free but after 2 months on the Specific Carb Diet and cutting out all the possible antagonists by just eating plain - good protein, meats, fish and poultry, fresh veg and fruits and a little honey and well-fermented yogurt, my gut has really started to heal...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Dairy Free And Still Overeating!
AliB replied to delilah's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was thinking a bit more about this - I wonder if there aren't 2 things going on here. One is that perhaps because you are no longer eating the grains, you aren't getting the nutrients that they were providing and your body is craving the extra food as a way of trying to replace it. The other is that because your body is now starting to heal and nutrients... -

Are you referring to the Unit at Morriston hospital in Swansea? We are about a 15 mile 15 - 20 minute drive from there. Any particular reason? Cara cymru lawer. Not sure about the translation. I checked it on one of those online translation sites - you would have laughed. I checked it in English and put in 'I love Wales much" What it gave me was ... -
ARCHIVED Question Regarding Other Allergies...
AliB replied to mjr4189's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The damage that gluten does to the intestine can cause Leaky Gut syndrome where undigested food particles that are small enough can cross the gut wall into the blood stream and cause allergic reactions as the immune system perceives them as a foreign 'invader'. Once gluten is removed from the diet and the gut starts to heal, allergic reactions should start... -
Thanks Tracy - it's good to get some feedback and to hear another experience. I don't think I am Celiac although very GI but I do wonder, in view of the fact that my Mum was Celiac, whether it can skip generations. That happens with diabetes sometimes apparently, and as diabetes and celiac seem to be linked then I would imagine it is possible. Although...

We're up the Neath Valley at Cwmgwrach, north east of Abertawe (that's Swansea to the uninitiated!) - the other end of the heads of the Valleys so not too far away from you. I'm afraid I'm an import not home-grown, but we love Wales. It's so different to Lloegr - the scenery is breathtaking. -
Just bumping this up as I would like to know more about DH. My daughter's itchy area did end up as a rash - it came out the next day. Can DH start small and occasional and get larger and more regular and problematic over time? Just out of interest we also have a friend who has had what was diagnosed as Erythema Nodosum. Has anyone ever suffered...

The doc is right in a way, eventually once it is sorted out you may well not need any supplements as your body will be able to absorb far more effectively. However, whilst it can't, it needs all the help it can get. Doctors seem, for some unfathomable reason to have an almost pathological hatred of vitamins and minerals - as if they are poison! That's...

ARCHIVED Withdrawal Symptoms
AliB replied to Octoberme's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was in the same place as you when I went gluten-free. My stomach had been getting worse for some time but in the end I was in so much pain - swallowing antacids by the bucketful and I didn't know what to do with myself. It wasn't until my digestion finally collapsed and I was running with diarrhea that I ended up in the hospital, but although they did... -
Sadly Celiacs don't have the monopoly on gluten being the cause of their problems. Whilst those who are not Celiac may not have to avoid it for the same reasons, their health issues due to gluten consumption may be just as debilitating and in some cases even more so. The plain fact is that because of the damage that gluten does to us all, virtually everyone...

PS. Where are you in Wales Nikky? Perhaps your Mum and I could bend each others' ears about the Celiac/gluten subject??? I kind of understand how she feels - this thing is huge. It is a lot lot bigger than all of us. So many people are sick and suffering and a huge percentage of that suffering is all down to gluten. I just want to tell everyone...
