    ARCHIVED Newbie

I suspect a lot of the problem is in the wheat itself. It has been so meddled about with and now with the advent of GM who knows what they are doing to it! It has been getting worse through the successive generations. Now apparently in the States 35% of the population have the genes for it. The genetic modification of the wheat and other gluten grains...
  2. As a child I missed a lot of school as I always had colds (and was always given the dreaded AB's!) - I hadn't thought about that until now but this has made me realise that was probably a Celiac indicator even back then. It is something that has plagued me for years - I would catch everything going - I had been thinking that it started when I was 15 as that...
  3. He's alway suffered with low self-esteem and confidence. He's a very insecure little boy - not helped by his Daddy leaving when he was 2 1/2. He was happy as a little sand-boy when he was here for the 2 week school break - I tried to ensure that none of us had gluten, but although my daughter is trying and he is supposed to be gluten-free at school, I...

    ARCHIVED Mad Mother?

University of Chicago Celiac Center states that 35% of Americans carry the Celiac gene. That's 1 in 3. Well, that's at least you and your son catered for............ If you are not happy demand a gene panel test - and a new doctor............
  5. This is exactly why the blood tests are so useless. What were your numbers? I fully believe that if you are displaying ANY antibodies then you are Celiac. If only the 'experts' would define that it would avoid people having to go through extremely invasive biopsies. It's even worse when they do it to children! My test was negative but I know I have it...
  6. Yesterday I saw in an article by the University if Chicago Celiac Center that 35% of Americans carry the Celiac gene/s. Thats 1 in every 3 people! They did say 'not everyone will get it' - how the heck do they know that? It is only recently that they finally twigged that this is not just a childhood disease that is 'grown out of'! Despite the 'negative...
  7. I got CC'd the other day and I had been doing so well. I made some cookies with oats, which I usually seem to be ok with but it was a new pack and I think they must have been contaminated. I only had half a cookie but by the time I went to bed my heart was fit to burst out of my chest it was pounding so hard and over the next day or so I could feel it...
  8. She may well be a 'Carbohydrate' metabolic type whose body can cope with grains perfectly well. Those people seem to be in the minority! Perhaps she recognised early on which foods suited her better and has continued on the path. On another tack - in the paper today was yet another situation of a dog attacking a child. I did read somewhere that dogs...
  9. Ah yes, but perhaps if enough of us shout loud enough they will finally start to sit up and take notice! What we lack in health we seem to make up for in common sense - anyone who is prepared to give gluten-free a trial must have some degree of that!
  10. In my family, apart from my Mum who died before it was diagnosed but was definitely Celiac, those with gluten intolerance or at least symptomatic of, include my Dad, probably his father (died at 50 of a heart attack), his three siblings, myself, my husband, our two children, our two grandchildren, their father and his mother and I daren't start on the cousins...
  11. As a Metabolic 'Protein' type I have never been able to cope with much in the way of fruit and could never figure out why. I always needed plenty of protein otherwise I get headaches and I have never been able to cope with carbs either. I couldn't figure out why on that either. A few weeks ago I discovered the Metabolic Typing Diet and after doing...
  12. Roger McDougall cured himself of MS with a gluten and dairy free diet back in the 50's. You can read the story at Open Original Shared Link It is very encouraging. Good for him figuring it out all those years ago. Bryan Forbes the actor developed it in the 70's - he adopted Roger's diet and has also been in remission since. I am sure that pretty...
  13. I posted this on another section in a thread but the realisation of it hit me so hard I wanted to see others' take on the subject. I keep seeing threads from ones who are not sure if they are Celiac or not and yes, it is VERY confusing. This is my observation. The powers that be keep saying that the incidence of family members having Celiac is around...
  14. The powers that be keep saying that the incidence of family members having Celiac is around 10%. Who are they kidding? Your family is absolute testimony that it is not true. Have you totted up all your family members from your grandparents down? What percentage is it really, and how many other family members probably have it but have never been tested...
  15. My symptoms were severe stomach pains, hernia and diarrhea. The pain would come up my gullet into my throat - I suspect the gas and bloating was displacing everything and causing severe 'heartburn'. Every time I ate I didn't know what to do with myself as the pain would last for hours - I actually got afraid to eat! Within several hours after starting...
  16. My son was the opposite, with ADD. His teacher always said that Steve would be sent to do a job, find 10 other things to do on the way and then have forgotten what he went for! Poor kid. His biggest problem was, and still is brain-fog and I wouldn't be remotely surprised if he has Celiac or at the very least extreme GI. I am the same. I never seem...
  17. As several of you already know from previous postings my Mum was 99% certainly Celiac. I may be Celiac or very Gluten Intolerant. My eldest grandson who is 6 has just been tested for Celiac. I am wondering if his Mum, my daughter could also be Celiac. She had a lot of Colic as a baby, was very insecure as a child, suffered with night terrors and 'growing...
  18. Hi Jo. Can you get more in the sticks than Wales??? Where are you? How did I know. Hmm. Well. I noticed some years back, probably 30-odd that if I didn't get enough protein every day I would end up with a headache. When pregnant with my first child my weight soared and I never lost it again. About 25 years ago I went to an 'Alternative' practitioner...
  19. What an ignorant doctor - sounds like he is the one who is confused! Honestly, they get five minutes of vague training at some point in the past and think they know it all! There is so much information for them to keep up with I rather think Celiac gets left by the wayside, which is hugely ironic considering the fact that it and gluten intolerance is...
  20. I kind of have a theory, and it is only a theory, but I wonder whether when we are ingesting gluten and malabsorption becomes an issue the reason we get so many illnesses and diseases could be because the body is drawing needed nutrients from other parts of itself in order to keep the essential organs going - for instance like the fact that many with Osteoporosis...
  21. Most people are affected by gluten to a lesser or greater degree whether they know it or not. Man has changed its biological structure from a simple protein molecule into a complex one that the body struggles to cope with. Some cope better than others. For many of us it is not just gluten that is the problem, but carbohydrates in general. If our metabolism...
  22. It sounds as if gluten intolerance may very well be a part of the picture. Due to the characteristically unreliable nature of the tests the only real way to tell is to 'suck it and see'. At the end of the day it is a relatively cheap and noninvasive way of trying to deal with his problems. Every drug he is given will further tax his already overburdened...
  23. Oh wow - even I remember that so well from when the kids were little - I could smell poo even when there wasn't any!!! You get so used to it, you're immune! My daughter is trying to sell her house and move up here with us and gets neurotic when she has a viewing in case there is a smell! (Put on the coffee, pop a gluten-free cake in the oven!!) ...
  24. Getting withdrawal from Dairy is quite likely. If you are experiencing some unexpected anxiety level then it is quite possible. I went through withdrawal but I came off gluten and dairy at the same time so probably killed 2 birds with one stone It's slightly difficult for us out here as we are not going through what you are so don't know how you...
