ARCHIVED How Can I Show That I Take Notice
AliB replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hmm yup, lectures, that about sums us up really. I know I do that and did that when my kids were younger. It's like I am never really quite sure that they have got the point I am making. My poor son - he was always late for everything and as he worked at the same place as me and had to come with me in the car every morning, inevitably he made me late... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Show That I Take Notice
AliB replied to nikky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you can talk to to others on the net about what you are going through, why not discuss it with your Mum? I think my kids must be sick of hearing about it too but I am just trying to get through to them about Celiac and gluten intolerance and how it affects so many people and really ought to be taken seriously. I'm a bit like a stuck record though... -
I have thought of suggesting that all my family gets tested. These things have a habit though of coming back negative unless there is major damage so whether there would be any point I'm not sure. My test came back negative but I am wondering if I might ask the doctor if she can arrange for me to have the DNA test. It would be interesting to see what...

I have been wondering for some time if my son might be either celiac or at least very gluten intolerant due to certain health issues. As a child I noticed that he often would get very red ears and I recognised back then it was probably to do with his digestion but didn't know why. My youngest grandson who is four also gets very red ears quite regularly...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Dairy Free And Still Overeating!
AliB replied to delilah's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Carbs are very, very addictive. How many people do you know who can stop at just one cookie? What I am seeing over and over again as I read the forums is so many who have gained a level of health back after going gluten-free only to then find themselves going back downhill after a few months. What is happening is that when they drop the gluten, they... -
ARCHIVED Hey, Newbie Here! My Story... Tmi?
AliB replied to Sarah2008's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh Sarah, I see this so many times. People like yourself who get better for a while than start to go downhill again. I am not sure that the problem is necessarily as straight-forward as being glutened or CC'd. There are an awful lot of people out there who are not just intolerant of gluten, but actually carbohydrates as a whole. I found when I went... -
Why were you diagnosed with Celiac in the first place? What triggered the diagnosis? What were your symptoms?
-
Your menu looks pretty good, the only things i would question is the ACV and grape juice drink. When my stomach was bad I tried ACV but it actually made it worse - in fact I actually ended up having an allergic reaction after some one day and it affected my throat. I think that if you don't have a problem with Candida you might get away with it but if you...

ARCHIVED Withdrawal Symptoms
AliB replied to Octoberme's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Getting weird symptoms for a while after starting gluten-free is quite common. Gluten is a very addictive neurotoxin so it is common to get withdrawal symptoms. You will also experience detox too. The 'discharge' suggests to me that you also have a problem with bacterial overgrowth (candida). Because the bacteria feed on the undigested carbs and sugars... -
ARCHIVED Basic Question Regarding Evidence Of Benefit Of Gluten-free Diet
AliB replied to benjamin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What most do not realize is that gluten damages the body's ability to absorb nutrients. Just because you are not YET showing any external symptoms of the disease does not mean that you won't at some point in the near or distant future. Around 300 years ago, a monk, Gregor Mendel discovered a way to hybridize wheat so that it could be grown in non-indigenous... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Kim. Sorry your son has been so poorly. Good job you didn't catch it though! Funnily enough, when we saw the weenies 2 weeks ago they both had colds and although my husband caught it, I didn't, so I too am wondering if, like you, my immune system is getting stronger. How are you feeling generally? Are you still coping with the diet OK? I have... -
ARCHIVED I Do Not Know If I Can Handle This
AliB replied to bisja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When I went gluten-free two months ago I was still having issues with other non-gluten foods, particularly carbs so I cut right to the chase and dropped not only gluten but dairy and most carbs and sugar. I concentrated on basic foods - plain unprocessed meat, fish and poultry with no additives or coatings, fresh fruits and vegetables and a small amount... -
My stomach got bad over 6 months or so and although I wasn't getting reflux I did have the awful pain behind the sternum. I have had reflux before, some years ago but that eventually went away, maybe when I went low-carb, I can't remember. But I know it wasn't pleasant and I used to get pain right up into my throat with it. This time I am pretty confident...

ARCHIVED Help! Gluten-free Dumb
AliB replied to Shmbrt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The dreadful stomach pain I would get for hours after eating went away within 5 hours. The bulk of the discomfort and bloating went away within a week but I was still getting some discomfort and particularly back pain with a lot of other foods, even gluten-free, and particularly carbohydrates. I also started getting other weird symptoms such as tingling... -
Just wondering why you are going for lean meat? You have to have fats in the diet. Contrary to popular opinion it is not fats (or eggs) that raise the cholesterol, but carbohydrates. You are doing the right thing by limiting your diet to basic foods, but there is obviously something in there that is still triggering the reflux. When my digestion collapsed...

ARCHIVED Questions, Dairy, Master Cleanser...
AliB replied to MelliDuff's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Christa. Just out of interest do you have a weight problem? You may, like me, actually be carbohydrate intolerant. The problem with carbs is that they are very addicitve. The more you eat, the more you want. The two times in my life I was ever really well was when I went low-carb so when I finally, like you - the doctors were useless in my case... -
ARCHIVED Other Food Allergies Going Away
AliB replied to kickboxer's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Your childrens' allergic type responses could be due to 'Leaky Gut Syndrome' allowing undigested food to cross the gut wall into the bloodstream. When foods, particularly complex carbohydrates such as sugar, lactose, grains and starches, cannot be digested properly due to the damage to the intestine, they become food for the bacteria. The bacteria then... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin And Mineral Deficiencies
AliB replied to JodiC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with Marlene, liver dysfunction is often a big problem especially for those of us who are overweight - that in itself can be an indicator of a sluggish liver, and I am pretty sure that has been my problem for years as my hair has gone from being lovely and thick and wavy to very thin and lifeless (and grey!). Back last year my hair was falling... -
ARCHIVED Basic Question Regarding Evidence Of Benefit Of Gluten-free Diet
AliB replied to benjamin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My Mum, who became Type 1 diabetic at the age of 16, was anemic all her life and had pregnancy and fertility problems (me, followed by a stillborn, then 10 miscarriages) - all diseases and problems that would be considered problems within their own right - was put on to a gluten-free diet by a doctor in the hospital where she spent the last few weeks of her... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Seeing More Results?
AliB replied to jesslynn555's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I very much agree that it could be other foods that are hindering your little ones' recovery. If we are still consuming foods that are contributing to the damage then recovery is bound to be slower or 'incomplete'. A good multi-vitamin is also a good idea. As the damage causes malabsorption issues then it may take a while for the reserves to build back... -
ARCHIVED Do I Have Celiac? I Am Confused
AliB replied to TruckerBird's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Birdie It does sound like you have Celiac - your doctor is not right to assume you you haven't got it just because the biopsy was negative. I noticed you said that you have problems with sugar and dairy both of which are di-saccharides (double molecule sugars). What is happening is that whilst mono-saccharides (single molecule sugars - vegetables... -
ARCHIVED Wheat And Corn Allergy!
AliB replied to wellsfamily's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I used to suffer with hyperinsulism and hypoglycemia for years before I became diabetic. The fact you get hypos may be an indicator that, like me, you are actually carbohydrate intolerant. You may not be Celiac but that doesn't mean that you aren't gluten and carbohydrate intolerant and the 'allergic' reactions may be due to Leaky Gut Syndrome and bacterial... -
You have to do a bit of 'psych-ing' up here. Keep telling yourself that the stuff is evil, it is killing you and you are better off without it. It is deceptively and insidiously poisoning you. You have seen the non-gluten 'light' and are way, way better off than all those thousands of poor people out there who do not know why they are suffering, that...

ARCHIVED Brain Fog
AliB replied to Nan2N's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Brain-fog is often due to bacterial overgrowth and the only way to deal with that is to get back to basics and cut out not just the gluten but dairy, sugar and most carbs. Whilst you continue to eat complex carbohydrates in grains and starches, sugar and lactose, you continue to feed the bacteria and they will continue to give you the brain-fog. Apart... -
People who are gluten intolerant and who have been consuming gluten for most of their life will have damage to the intestines. Typically the gut issues tend not to show up until the damage has reached a particular level. Dairy is often an issue because the enzymes needed to break down the lactose which is a di-saccharide (double molecule) are emitted...
