ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Rob, I have just checked my husband's Tesco's Complete for Men (sorry, due to your name I am assuming you're a man!). I have noticed that it contains a little maize starch, sucrose and maltodextrin. I think some of these things are going to be very difficult to avoid one way or another. As it is only one tablet a day I would imagine that the amount... -
ARCHIVED Restless Leg Syndrome And Celiac Disease
AliB replied to JenniferRH's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Regardless of what the 'experts' theories are, Restless Leg Syndrome is connected with the digestion. I proved this to myself many times when I have been unable to sleep because of it, until I have managed to 'expel' the offending (and offensive!) irritation thereby being able to go back to bed and sleep like a baby! It is something I too have suffered... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)

Supplements can be a minefield - there they are, supposed to be healthy for you and actually they can be full of rubbish too! I'm not sure where you are. Here in the UK I buy Tesco's Complete for Women (although they also do one for Men which my Hub has found helpful) but if you are in the States I don't know what is available there. I was taking loads... -
ARCHIVED Who Else Can't Eat Any Grains At All (even Gluten Free)?
AliB replied to Yenni's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
As long as you totally avoid grain and starch-based carbohydrates and sugar and confine your diet to plenty of tolerated good protein (nothing processed), meat, fish and fowl, eggs, the carbs from fruit and vegetables (not potatoes or other root veg except carrots), honey, nuts and very well cultured (at least 24 hours to fully break down the lactose and... -
ARCHIVED Who Else Can't Eat Any Grains At All (even Gluten Free)?
AliB replied to Yenni's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
By cutting out the carbs now I am hoping to cut straight to the chase. If I don't then I may also find that I eventually will end up with major problems at a later stage with other carbs and also other non-carb foods because my gut can't cope any more. I just don't want to get to that stage, where I cannot get proper nutrition from the right food sources... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Although I can't tolerate dairy per se, I did seem to be able to tolerate yogurt right through - although I was only having goat's yogurt. I decided to try cow's milk yogurt this week and bought some Total Greek yogurt, but my stomach definitely didn't like it very much. However, when I made my first batch of 24hour yogurt I used the Total as a starter... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have just tasted some of my first batch of 24hour yogurt. That has to be the best yoghurt I have ever eaten! It is fantastic! I made it with full cream milk, half a pot of single (light) cream and a dash of double (heavy) and Total thick greek yoghurt as a starter. I did try to get my husband to have a taste but he just has a pathological and totally... -
ARCHIVED Can't Figure Out What's Wrong With Our Baby
AliB replied to TalyQ's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Sometimes their little digestive systems just aren't mature enough to cope with all the food we have. You say that you are living on rice and potatoes at the moment. Could you try substituting those for some different carbohydrates to see if it makes any difference? Can you get hold of things like carrots and other root vegetables - turnips, parsnips... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Rob. Apparently it can take up to three weeks to start see a change. I went gluten-free/DF at the end of Jan so was already on the right path and the diarrhea stopped almost immediately. Strangely though, since I started the SCD my 'movements' have changed again, almost going backwards. My body will be going through a flux period until it starts... -

ARCHIVED Concerned Father Needs Your Help.
AliB replied to ble123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have just made some of the yogurt Elaine Gottschall suggests and will leave it for the at least 24 hours she recommends. Apparently then most of the lactose and casein gets broken down by the bacteria - it also gives the bacteria time to culture more and lactic acid is created to mop up any remaining lactose. Most commercial yogurts are only fermented... -
Could be 'floaters'. I have had those for years. They are quite common and appeared when I was in my early 20's, although I am not aware of having had any more since. I was very carb intolerant even back then and used to get a lot of hypos - could well have been to do with the carb intolerance, you never know. I also wonder if you have any deficiency...

I have noticed this an awful lot on the forum, that many who have felt better after going gluten free then start to regress and get other alarming symptoms. Nearly every other post seems to be about the same problem! I keep posting about this but I am determined to get the message out! Our biggest problem is not just gluten and dairy, but carbohydrates...

I keep posting about this but I am determined to get the message out! Our biggest problem is not just gluten and dairy, but carbohydrates per se. I have been doing a lot of research about this since my digestion collapsed and have figured out why. I stopped gluten and dairy, and although I got immediate relief from the awful stomach pain, I still had... -
ARCHIVED Can't Figure Out What's Wrong With Our Baby
AliB replied to TalyQ's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Of course gluten can get into the milk - maybe not the whole thing, but certainly components of it. Many on this forum have told how their babies got better when they themselves removed gluten and dairy from their diets. There may also be other things that you are consuming or drinking that are affecting the baby. If you have low immunity that would... -
I too have developed intolerances to a lot of different foods, gluten and dairy just 2 of them, and have done a lot of research into what is happening to my body. Your problem, like mine, is probably not just gluten but an intolerance to carbohydrates per se. Because of over-consumption of carbs our gut has become so damaged that it cannot cope with the...

Elaine Gottschall in her book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle explains what happens when we eat carbs. Mono-saccharides (single molecule carbs) like honey, fruits, some vegetables and well-fermented yogurt (where the lactose and casein is broken right down, unlike the commercial yogurts which are only short fermented), can cross the gut into the blood stream...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
AliB replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Rob. I have only been on it myself for 3 days, but from what I can figure it helps to balance weight, so those that need to lose, will lose, those who need to gain, will gain, and those that don't, don't! I suppose it is possible that you might lose a few lbs initially, but I would think that would pick back up again as the body adjusts. I know there... -

AliB replied to ble123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi. This does seem to be a problem that I am coming across with great frequency on the forum. different ones often say that although they were getting better they have started to regress. Answers often come back that perhaps other intolerances have occurred or developed. My digestion collapsed in January. When no reason could be found and Celiac blood... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bread Allergy?
AliB replied to gluten15's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Could just be carbs in general - one of the first things I bought was some gluten-free rolls. I ended up with an allergic reaction to something in them and had to throw them away (they were pretty disgusting anyway!). I have made some gluten-free cakes and waffles and things but every time I eat some I get some sort of reaction (although I made an SCD... -
Sorry about repeating the post twice - my broadband connection failed just as I was sending it, and thinking it hadn't gone, when it had reconnected, I sent it again! Ooops.

I know exactly what you mean about picky - my youngest grandson is 4 and he has always been terribly picky, although I'm not sure he was so bad as a baby. He was diagnosed with ASD although he is actually quite bright and demonstrative, but has learning delay and is only in the 25th percentile for height. For a long time he would only eat sausages and...
