When my doctor changed me from insulin to Byetta in July, I started to get bad stomach problems, very bloated and painful. I had suffered with IBS for some years, but some months prior to the Byetta I had followed the alkalizing diet for a short while and the IBS had settled down a bit. Because my stomach problems were so bad and because the Byetta was...

I also experienced quite extreme hair loss prior to going gluten-free. I have not experienced the anxiety or depression as I do not appear to have a genetic weakness for that, but I know a lot of people do. You can be Celiac without having any digestive problems at all which is why it is often so hard to pick up. Apparently, digestive issues only occur...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
AliB replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Not sure what you mean by 'not giving your body anything'. The diet consists of meat, fish, poultry, fats, eggs, and lots of simple carbs from fresh fruit and plenty of vegetables. You can supplement with a little honey and nuts, if your stomach can handle them, and some good, well-cultured yogurt. There is plenty of food to choose from so there is no... -
ARCHIVED Pre-diabetic Or Slow Thyroid Before Diagnosis?
AliB replied to Kristin81's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I suffered with hyperinsulinism and hypoglycemia for years then finally ended up diabetic about 11 years ago. I now know that I have had GI issues for years - my problem seems to be carbohydrates in general, not just gluten. The only 2 times in my life I was well was when I ate low-carb and I am kicking myself now for not keeping it going. Any damage... -
Not sure about that. I am on Metformin for my diabetes along with insulin, and was also on a blood-pressure tablet which I have stopped as my blood pressure has come down. I took the Milk Thistle along with multivitamins and supplements without any obvious effect on anything except my rejuvenated hair and the disappearance of my gallstones! Milk Thistle...

Back as far as the end of the 1800's doctors realised that Celiacs had a problem with carbohydrates. Whilst some can cope with carbs others can't. If you have dropped gluten and are finding after some time that you are still not well, or as some find, they have an initial recovery then start to go back downhill, your problem may actually be due to more...

My daughter who is 29 has been getting little occasional rashes that are sometimes itchy but not always. At the moment she has a very itchy area on her back but there does not yet seem to be any rash. A few months ago she had rashes on both hips although they weren't particularly itchy. I too have had odd itchy skin areas occasionally over the years...

Unfortunately for a lot of people, its not just gluten but carbohydrates per se that is the problem. They may feel better for a while but because they have just ended up replacing the gluten carbs with different non-gluten ones, they will eventually become intolerant of those too. Meanwhile, the gut is still not healing properly. Some of us just aren...

When we omit the main antagonists from our diet we will often find that other food issues show up that originally were masked by everything else. It is likely that coffee has always been a problem but you just didn't notice it until the other things were taken away! I noticed Emily that you seem to have problems with things like raisins and red wine....

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet?
AliB replied to PreOptMegs's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Just Google 'Specific Carbohydrate Diet' and it will come up with links. The best is Elaine Gottschall's 'Breaking the Vicious Cycle' site. Also 'Pecanbread' - aimed toward kids with Autism and ASD as the diet is very successful for this, but helpful for all with many different problems, children and adults alike. There are a few other websites for more... -

I am following the SCD at the moment and am experiencing similar results. Whilst it is still early days - I have only been on it since the beginning of March, my gut is beginning to cope a lot better and I am able to tolerate a few more foods now that I would not have been able to a few weeks ago. I am also beginning to get a little energy back, I jogged...

If you Google Specific Carbohydrate Diet it will come up with some links, like 'Breaking the vicious cycle', and Pecanbread (aimed for kids with Autism and ASD but still very useful for the rest of us). There are also threads on here which may be helpful - one on this section and one on 'Food Intolerance and related issues' section. What it entails at...

It may be that like me and many others, you are actually intolerant of carbs per se, not just gluten. If you are replacing the gluten-based carbs with gluten-free carbohydrate it may be that these are foods that, because your body is not used to them, it is currently tolerating and not giving you the health issues that resulted in your weight loss. What...

ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Kim. Unfortunately my daughter doesn't have an internet connection, but we talk on the phone every day. We have a phone service where I pay a fixed rate and we can talk for as long as we like for 'free' which is great and are often on the phone for an hour or more at a time. The boys tell me what they have been up to - in quite graphic detail at times... -
Before my digestion finally collapsed due to gluten intolerance my hair was falling out by the handfuls. It was everywhere and I was frightened I would go bald! That may be acceptable for a 50 year old man, but not a woman! I know that problems with hair can be linked to deficiencies, but it can also be to do with poor liver function. I took Milk Thistle...

ARCHIVED Is There Anything I Can Do To Supress My Appetite?
AliB replied to blondebombshell's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I used to have a problem like that until I went gluten-free/DF but realised quite quickly that like a lot of people (who often don't know they are) I am actually carbohydrate intolerant and gluten is only a part of the problem. My body cannot cope with carbs. I, also like a lot of other people, have bacterial overgrowth. The problem with that is that... -
ARCHIVED Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD)
AliB replied to AliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Kim. Sounds like me that you are, and probably have been intolerant of dairy for years. I have always had loads of catarrgh and mucous, not so much sneezing, but just always bunged up. That is a lot better since I stopped the dairy. I seem to be ok with the goats yogurt and I had a little cottage cheese today. Interestingly, although my husband... -
ARCHIVED Didn't Know Where To Post. Please Help!
AliB replied to blondebombshell's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You would be better starting the day with some protein. It helps to balance your blood sugar. Even a cooked breakfast would be good, preferably without carbohydrate. If you can't cope with that another idea would be to start the day with fruit. It gives a slow release of good carbohydrate which also helps to keep the blood sugar stable and reduce fatigue... -
I dropped gluten and dairy in January but still had issues with food and realised that, like many others who often don't realise it, my problem is more than just gluten and dairy - I am actually very carbohydrate intolerant. Although I had cut down on some carbs, I had still replaced the gluten with other carbs instead and was having problems with them...

I had a problem with hyperinsulinism and hypoglycemia for years before I became diabetic 10 years ago at the age of 40. Two times in my life I went low-carb I was a lot better and my blood sugar was much more stable, and I am just kicking myself now that I went back to the carbs and sugar and didn't keep it going. My body does not cope with carbohydrate...

Please check out the Pecanbread website. It is geared for children with Autism and ASD using the SC Diet and great results are being achieved - up to 100% success in some clinics. The Diet is also very helpful for children with behavioral and other problems also caused by food intolerance and adults with varied problems, not only celiac but other bowel...

ARCHIVED For Long-time Strict Gfers With Depression/anxiety
AliB replied to eLaurie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Many have found by doing SCD or Paleo type diets and dropping virtually all carbs and sugar and just eating plain foods that the first things to resolve are the 'mental' problems, often even before the GI problems. I am convinced that so many of us are actually carb intolerant rather than just Gluten, which would explain why so many have an initial improvement... -
I was just thinking about the tightness you experience after the toilet - I wonder if it might be your bowel going into spasm? How long does it last? Perhaps it is still inflamed a bit and reacts when you have a motion. As for the sleep, how long have you been gluten-free? I have been sleeping better since I went gluten-free/DF in January and latterly...

I enjoy a cooked breakfast with sausage (gluten-free), eggs (if tolerated), tomatoes, maybe a little bacon. Another idea is mackerel on thin rice cakes. I mix it with a little mayo. You can do the same with salmon, tuna, shrimp and sardines. Rice cakes are good bases for different things - ham, eggs, cheese, fish, whatever takes your fancy. Pate...
