ARCHIVED Do I Call Myself A Celiac?
MDRB replied to GlutenFree4Life's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I guess because there are other health problems that have similar symptoms to celiac disease and can improve on a gluten-free diet (eg lyme disease, candida problem). Also that theory doesn't really help people who have celiac disease but don't get much in the way of symptoms. Other than that I totally agree with you, until doctors become more aware and... -
ARCHIVED G-f Shopping In Australia
MDRB replied to cariburoo's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi, I live in Melbourne, here are a couple of my favorites: - Pizza Piazza on Chapel st - Silly Yaks in Northcote - Crown Pizza and Rib in Reservoir - Lord of the Fries on the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth St in the City - Vegie Bar on Brunswick St All of these places offer gluten free options that are pretty good. My favorite is Silly... -
I called my local pharmacy yesterday to ask about some antibiotics. i was put straight onto the pharmacist, I told him that I was gluten intolerant and needed to know if the antibiotics have any gluten in them. After about five minutes of him umm-ing and ahh-ing he said 'oh yes, I'm afraid they DO have gelatin in them' 'Ummmm that doesn't really help...

Hi, I was told at around 16 that I had endometriosis and put on the pill to try and regulate my periods. I had such severe pain that I would pass out or vomit and I would sometimes bleed for weeks. I had been on the pill for about 7 years when I was diagnosed with celiac disease. I have gone off the gluten and off the pill and I think that my periods, although...

Hi, I just wanted to add that I use flax seed oil because it is great for the gut. You can add it to salad or smoothies or pretty much anything

At the hospital where I work we give the patients menu slips to choose from. It is the nurses job to inform the kitchen if they have someone with a food issue and also to stamp a large 'GLUTEN FREE' or 'DAIRY FREE' or 'DIABETIC' if the patient requires special foods.

ARCHIVED Australians And New Zealanders Hellooooooo :)
MDRB replied to Aussie Peg's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have heard a few different opinions about glucose syrup not just in ice cream but also in sweets and soft drinks. Honestly I'm a little confused, how is it that these are considered gluten free and why is it that some people react and others don't? -
ARCHIVED Stomach Pain
MDRB replied to sandersclan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Five days is a long time to have stomach pain. I found that I was usually in pain and had stomach problems for 2 or 3 days if I got glutened and then had another week or so of just feeling fatigued. I would suggest taking her to the doctor if she doesn't feel better soon. -
ARCHIVED A Question On Your Experience With Celic Disease / Gluten Intolerance
MDRB replied to CDGuy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
1. I had various stomach symptoms including bloating, alternating between diarrhea and constipation, extremely bad period pain, chemical sensitivity, but the most debilitating was the constant fatigue. 2. After going to doctor after doctor over the years I eventually started doing some internet research and asked some probing questions about my family... -
I hate hate HATE these comments! How sad is your life if you think you would KILL yourself if you had to change the way you eat? Yes it is hard but it is not the end of the world and I certainly never contemplated suicide because I could not eat a few grains. The people who say these things don't realize that they are actually making you feel worse...

One of the funniest for me is when you tell someone that you can't have gluten and they bring you something that is obviously not gluten free and say 'but "gluten" is not listed on the ingredients!' A lot of people don't know what gluten is or assume that it is one item rather than a protein that is found in almost everything.

ARCHIVED gluten-free Symptoms, Plz Help
MDRB replied to purple's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, The only one of these symptoms that I have had is the extreme periods. I used to have really irregular, heavy, painful periods, so much so that I would throw up or occasionally pass out (I'm guessing from blood loss). I was put on the contraceptive pill at 16 to help regulate them (which worked fairly well by the way). I have been gluten free for about... -
ARCHIVED Australian Gluten Free Restaurants
MDRB replied to MDRB's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
'Gluten lite' really? What is the point in having something that is gluten lite? I guess not everyone is as sensitive but something gluten lite rather than gluten free would definitely make me sick! -
If you can see the picture next to my display name then you are pretty much in my head. I drew that and the idea came from the multiple dreams I have in which some form of gluten monster (like a hot dog bun or donut with big arms and angry looking teeth) is chasing me and trying to hurt me. I also have dreams in which I am being held in a hostage situation...

I used to get the restless legs which went away after going gluten-free, but I still have and have always had the jerking awake thing which I think is a pretty natural thing, it also happens to my fiance who is far from gluten intolerant. Hope this helps

I used to get migraines and nausea from just about anything: nail polish, cleaning liquid, fabric softener. I used to hate walking through the perfume section in department stores. The worst was when I passed out at work because they had steam cleaned all the carpets with that horrible chemical they use . I found that my sensitivity completely went away...

ARCHIVED Small Red Spots In Mouth
MDRB replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, I used to get white lumps that turned dark red after a couple of days, this went away after going gluten-free. If there is anything weird going on in my mouth I check everything I am eating for gluten before I even think about going to a dentist. lol hope this helps -
ARCHIVED Do I Call Myself A Celiac?
MDRB replied to GlutenFree4Life's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, I have been diagnosed with celiac disease. When I go to a new doctor I tell him/her that I have celiac disease but if I'm just talking to someone, refusing food they offer me or something I usually just say that I am gluten intolerant otherwise I get that look like 'OMG you have a disease?!' I guess it depends on how knowledgeable the other person... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal
MDRB replied to MPARANA's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Before I went gluten free chemicals used to really bother me, hair dyes, nail polish, cleaning liquid, perfume pretty much anything used to give me a migraine and nausea. I have found that this got worse when I went gluten lite but completely went away once I went gluten free. It could be that your sensitivity is a symptom of the celiac disease and it may... -
Thanks for writing this. I don't have the heart to cut my mother out of my life completely, but I moved out of home when I was 16 and have been striving for that 'emotional distance' that you have, ever since. Its strangely comforting to know that other people have had similar experiences. I also know what you mean about having a mother who tries to 'spoil...

ARCHIVED Not Sure I'm Being Cautious Enough
MDRB replied to Nan2N's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
How long have you been gluten free for? I have been gluten-free for about 3 months and I'm really only starting to feel better and still have some off days. Make sure you use separate condiments and wash your hands if you think that you have touched something that has been glutened. I also think that washing is enough with your pans and plates etc. I... -
Hi Thanks to everyone for the advice. I'm finding this really hard. On the one hand I want to cut my mother out of my life, she is toxic in more ways than one and I find it really frustrating and hurtful. On the other hand she is still my mum, I want her in my life, I'm getting married in January and I want her involved. Its a hard situation to deal with...

Hi, I don't think that it contains gluten, but if you want to double check you should call the company. Also, I looked it up at work (hospital) and the drug information site states that it could be habit forming so you shouldn't take too much of it for too long otherwise your body will not want to work without the extra help. You may want to talk to your...

Oh dear, typical man. Perhaps you should just start booking things - he'll figure it out I have been reading some pretty scary things about the labeling laws in england. There is a post in the international section that implies that the food labeled suitable for celiacs in the UK actually has gluten in it. What do you think?

Ok, here is my story. I work in the same hospital as my mother (I'm nursing, she's administration) and we usually have lunch together. I came into her office so we could have lunch together and she pulled out this giant baking dish telling me that she had made my favorite dessert... bread and butter pudding! and then said 'oh but if you have celiac disease...
