  1. Oh how frustrating to find someone so misinformed. I found a gluten free vegetarian cookbook the other day, I was SO excited because a lot of gluten free cookbooks have mostly meat based main meals, anyway I flicked through it and noticed that almost half of the recipes had oats in them!!!! I know that there has been controversy over gluten in oats but...
  2. It sounds like you are having a really hard time. I have only been gluten free for about 2 months, so I don't really have an answer to the 'how do we do this forever?' question, but I have found that eating gluten free has become second nature and that I don't crave gluten foods anymore, I just think about how sick they make me. There are some really really...
  3. I live in Australia so I doubt we'd have the same brands. However I find that the gluten free buckwheat pancake mixes are the best, fluffy, light and tasty. Just make sure that they are gluten free because a lot of buckwheat mixes have wheat flour in them.
  4. There has been a lot of debate about gluten in oats, but most celiac references say not to. If you are looking for a breakfast alternative there are some really good rice porridges out there.
  5. Your general practitioner should be able to do a skin biopsy, or you could go to a dermatologist. Just make sure that you ask for a proper biopsy for dermatitis herpetiformis otherwise they will just take a skin scraping which is totally useless for diagnosing DH. Good luck
  6. Well, here is mine: I guess I have had symptoms of celiac disease since I was a kid. I was constantly sick with various things, it seemed that I would catch anything that was going around. I also had bad teeth, was very slow to grow (I'm still only 5ft 2" and 110 pounds having gained 10 pounds since going gluten-free, However my three older brothers...
  7. Hi, I wouldn't worry about the asking the dotor to do anything specific, he would have your information and knows what to look for. My doctor came to see me while I was still waking up after the procedure and gave me the results then. However I have heard people have to wait as long as a week. I guess it depends on if they can see the damage just by looking...

    ARCHIVED Friends?

Oh dear, Some people just suck don't they?! I know how it feels to have unsupportive people in your life. Unfortunately this person for me is my mother, who is a little harder to cut out of my life. Whenever we meet up at her house or mine, she makes only one dish and it is always a giant gluten filled pasta dish and then behaves all ofended when I...
  9. One thing I have learnt with celiac disease is that anything is possible. Symptoms differ greatly between patients and your body does all kinds of weird things that you don't expect it to. However, in your case it sounds like a cross containation issue, if like you said, you ingested something that was processed on the same equipmet as wheat products the...
  10. Does New Zealand have the same stuff as Australia? I get my gluten-free pretzels from the health food section in safeway or coles. Also have seen them in a few health food stores. Sorry can't remember the brand Good luck in the UK, I lived over there for about 4 months before going gluten-free. I guess there is much more variety out there so you probably...
  11. Wow, Thanks for all the replies and somewhat lively debate You guys have really given me something to think about. Thanks especially to 'riceguy' for all the nutritional information as it gives me an idea of what I should be eating on a vegan diet. I think I accidentally neglected to post an important peice of information: I have been a vegetarian...

    ARCHIVED Menstruation

Thanks for all the replies ladies I have decided to go off the pill, I haven't been gluten free for long but hopefully my periods won't be as bad now. Its really interesting to learn that celiac disease and endometriosis/fertility problems are linked (yet another sign that my doctors have managed to miss!). I guess I can always go back on the pill if...
  13. Yep that sounds about right. I get weak and dizzy when I get glutened as well as stomach symptoms and fatigue. I have quit eating almost all processed foods because you just can never tell where they have been made and cross contamination is a really big problem. I'm sorry you are having a rough time. I hope you feel better soon.
  14. I used to crave a lot of fatty things like hot chips, crisps, pastries etc before going gluten free however now that I am gluten-free I'm finding that I crave broccoli a lot, broccoli and just about any other kind of vegetable. Not sure if this is a physical craving or a psychological thing: vegetables = healthy therefore if I eat lots of vegetables I will...
  15. Hi, Are you taking the probiotics in capsule form or are you taking the little drink versions? I took the little drink things and didn't have any problems with constipation, however I think that they contain dairy. You could try going off them for a few days to see if your symptoms are relieved, this would at least confirm that the two things are related...
  16. Hi, I have been gluten free for about six weeks and am still experiencing symptoms. I've been considering going on a vegan diet (ie. no animal products whatsoever) because I have heard that it is good for healing the gut as the foods are low fat and easy to digest. I would of course still be gluten free. Thoughts? Has anyone else had any success with this...
  17. Hair loss is sometimes a problem for celiac patients because they are not absorbing nutrients properly. Vitamin B is often the one that causes the hair problem. I would obviously suggest that your sister goes and gets some tests for celiac disease, also she could try a multivitamin or vitamin B supplement.
  18. Yes Yes Yes Definitely, fatigue is apparently one of the most common symptoms of celiac disease. I had to go back onto gluten for a month to get the endoscopy and I barely got out of bed for those four weeks. One of my biggest incentives to not eat gluten is that feeling I had and wanting to avoid it at all costs. I hope you feel better soon
  19. I wouldn't bother going to a nutritionist unless you know of one who is particularly good and knows a lot about celiac disease. I have tried a couple and been really disappointed, not only are they extremely expensive but most of them only have a very vague idea of what celiac disease is. I have recently been considering going vegan in order to speed up...
  20. yep, Because its has sprouted and is no longer a grain, it no longer has gluten. No grasses contain gluten as far as I am aware. I used to take something similar in the form of gluten free powdered wheat grass. Must admit it did help the energy levels.
  21. Hi, I need some information about gluten free products and restaurants in New Zealand. I'm getting married in January next year and I'm honeymooning all over NZ and am a little worried about not being able to find gluten-free foods. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  22. Hhhmmm, Well my understanding is that cows are fed sprouted wheat which doesn't contain gluten, so it is ok for people with celiac disease but not for people with a wheat allergy? I think only the wheat grain contains gluten because once sprouted it turns into some sort of amino acid. Thats my understanding but I could be totally wrong. Also, my doctor...
  23. Hi, You have come to the right place for information. Have a browse through the posts here and have a look at some other sites. When I was diagnosed I cleared out my entire pantry of anything that contains gluten. I stopped eating most processed food and made everything from scratch. I eat the occasional gluten free corn cracker or chocolate biscuit, but...
  24. Did she eat fries and things while there? Sometimes things you don't expect to have gluten in them, do have gluten in them. It could be celiac disease or it could be that she is constipated from the fatty foods supplied at Disney Land! If it doesn't get better once she is back on her regular diet, I would suggest seeing a doctor.
  25. I have had weird looking teeth since I was a kid. I wish my dentist had been clued in as t may have prevented me becoming this sick.
