ARCHIVED Glutino Bread Price Increase
Rondar2001 replied to nb-canada's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't bought Glutino bread recently, but I find that I am buying less and less at Superstore. The muffin mix we like is $2 more there than at the organic food market we go to, and the Kinnikinnik bread is always more expensive then at Safeway. I still look at thier selection, but most items I can find cheaper elsewhere. -
ARCHIVED My 8 Yr Old Is Off To gluten-free Camp!
Rondar2001 replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My eight year old daughter is off to gluten free camp for a week in August. The local Celiac Association puts it on every year (this will be her first). They have a professional chef as the camp cook and I admit I am jealous too! It's great to see that these kids are able to get involved without any worries. -
ARCHIVED Chicken Fried Steak Recipes?
Rondar2001 replied to Afternoon's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This was actually the first recipe I converted when my daughter went gluten free. Here is how I always make it: very thin sliced round steak (I get the butcher to cut it or buy rouladen in a pinch) You will need 3 pie plates: Pie Plate 1 - Seasoned Flour (I use the Kinnickinick sp? all purpose gluten free flour with salt and pepper) Pie Plate... -
ARCHIVED Results Of Egd - Reactive Gastropothy?
Rondar2001 replied to darkhorse's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi there, just a note of caution on the GERD diagnosis. My tests showed that I had GERD even though I very rarely get heartburn; the techs kept asking me how severe my heartburn was even though I told them I don't get heartburn. My regular doctor prescribed Nexium which did absolutely nothing. I then saw a GI doc who basically said the tests for GERD... -
ARCHIVED Does Going gluten-free Change Child's Behavior Quickly?
Rondar2001 replied to cgwilde's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Gluten can definitely change a child's behaviour. One of our main complaints before our dd was diagnosed was how moody she could be. Since being gluten free, this has improved dramatically. Now one of the tipoffs to me that she got glutened is the completely irrational moods come back with a vengence. There is no pleasing her when that happens and I just... -
Ok, so I somehow got roped into baking a couple of pies for our company picnic. Let me add that I have never baked a pie before, but I figure if I'm going to start it might as well be something my daughter can try. Basically, I need suggestions of a very tasty but easy to make pie. It will need to be outside, so Ice Cream pies are likely out. I hope...

ARCHIVED Was An Endoscopy Required For A Dx?
Rondar2001 replied to mommaof4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi Momma, welcome to the forum. With regards to the endoscopy you will find some answers are pro and some are against. You will need to make your own decision with what is best for your family. We did decide to go for the endoscopy for a firm diagnosis. When my daughter gets older, she will not be able to question whether she really has it or not, and... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Food Samples
Rondar2001 replied to Rondar2001's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It was alright, not too many samples, but my daughter sure enjoyed them. The Calgary Celiac Association was there handing out all kinds of tip sheets and explaining to the shoppers what Celiac is. It was my first time in that store (I live in the south) and I found their prices to be pretty good there. -
That receipe sounds great! I tried making a boxed version when my daughter first went gluten free. My family politely told me to never try making risotto again. I may try it from scratch and not tell them what it is though.

Hi, just to let any fellow Calgarians know, Amaranth Whole Foods Market in Arbour Lake is having an event on Saturday May 23, from 12-4 with gluten free food samples.

ARCHIVED Grocery Outlet
Rondar2001 replied to lonewolf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've noticed some of the Shoppers Drug Marts here in Calgary are also starting to sell quite a few Glutino products. I even hit one sale where their cookies were on for $2.50 a box. Nice to see they are marketing some more mainstream places. -
ARCHIVED My First Shopping Expedition... It Didn't Go Well :-(
Rondar2001 replied to Storm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Storm, we have all been where you are right now. I would suggest starting with veggies and meat instead of worrying so much about gluten free processed foods. Steak and a baked potato is an easy one (just check any spice blends you use first). The thing that helped me the most in the beginning was a basic gluten free flour mix although I'm sure rice... -
ARCHIVED Challenges Your Kids Face?
Rondar2001 replied to B'sgirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter does feel left out at times when she sees something that her friends are eating that she can't have, but I try to provide her with as many alternatives that I can and that seems to help. We do have a problem with her sandwiches in that one of her friends said her bread is weird and now she won't eat it at school. I just send her with meat... -
ARCHIVED How To Test Gluten Spagetti For Doneness?
Rondar2001 replied to digmom1014's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have always used the throw it at a cupboard, if it sticks, its done method. Have you tried the corn pastas? We switched and find them much more palatable than the rice kind. -
Today my daughter has been gluten free for 1 whole year. I can't believe the difference! She has gained almost 20 lbs and 3 inches and looks healthy. I remember my first shopping trip to Walmart, I bought potato flour (even thought I had no clue what to do with it) and Lays potato chips as these were all I could find that I knew were safe for her....

ARCHIVED Frustrated By Gi Wait Time - Anyone Else?
Rondar2001 replied to JustAGirl79's topic in Doctors
Wow, I hadn't even heard about the centralized service, it's nice to know if I ever get a referral like that. Good luck with having your appointment moved up. I would suggest that once you have a specific doctor's name, that you contact them directly as well. I fully understand your frustration! -
ARCHIVED Frustrated By Gi Wait Time - Anyone Else?
Rondar2001 replied to JustAGirl79's topic in Doctors
Hi, I'm in Calgary. First off, if you want to go with a biopsy, you need to keep eating gluten. My daughter managed to get in to see her GI specialist within a month (pediatric). Because she had positive blood work they upped her ranking in priority. I also called and had them add us to the cancellation list. This is how we got in so quickly. I... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Frosting Pre-made Or Recipe
Rondar2001 replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
In Canada, the Walmart Great Value brand icings look to be gluten free. My daughter hasn't had any issues when I use these. -
ARCHIVED G-f National Restaurants?
Rondar2001 replied to Jenbirds's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We have had good experiences at both Chili's and Montana's here in Canada. Swiss Chalet is our usual place to eat out though and haven't had any problems there. Is Olive Garden gluten free? -
ARCHIVED My Daughter Looks To Have Celiac
Rondar2001 replied to Lisa79's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have to agree that it is a much healthier diet. My child brings lunches to school that I would not have thought of putting together before. I love the idea of the gluten free party. I will be 1 year since my dd's biopsy on May 4 and now the ideas are flying through my brain on how to make it a positive experience for her. Thanks! -
ARCHIVED Anyone From Edmonton, Alberta?
Rondar2001 replied to Ryan T's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm in Calgary, but I cheer for the Oilers so does that count? -
I am an advair user and I do not have gluten issues (my dd has Celiac). I think the problem with candida only comes about if you don't rinse your mouth after using it. In the 3 years I have been taking the strongest dose I have never had a problem with it. If you decide to stop using it, please contact your doctor first. Anytime you have medicines for...

Some Sobey stores are getting really good. My sister asked at the one near her and they gave her a list of all the gluten free items in the store. I also noticed they are carrying a new company out of PEI that makes gluten free flours.

ARCHIVED Dizzy Spells And Feeling Sick
Rondar2001 replied to Rondar2001's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The low blood sugar was the direction I was thinking too, I'll try the snacks every two hours and see if that helps and also try upping her water intake. Thanks for the feedback! -
ARCHIVED Dizzy Spells And Feeling Sick
Rondar2001 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi, My daughter has been gluten free since last May. Recently she has been complaining of dizzy spells and often complains that she is feeling sick. This sick feeling goes away as soon as she eats. The dizzy spells were especially bad on a night she went roller skating and there was a strobe light on. Just wondering if anyone else has come across something...
