  1. That is too funny. A couple of months ago, my mother suggested I try this. I don't think it helped me very much but she swears by it. My husband thought she was a total nutcase when he ran across a bar of soap in our sheets. I say try it out and hopefully it will work for you.
  2. Thanks for sharing your story. I think this goes to show that a doctor may do an endoscopy to look for any other medical issues going on, even if they may not list everything they might possibly see to the patient. Personally, I would rather have things checked out as fully as possible instead of taking a chance that something may be missed. Of course...
  3. I have one (although the non-hormonal one) and have been very happy with it. The first couple of periods were pretty crampy, but after that not so bad. After years of taking the pill and deproprevera (sp?), I have been quite satisfied with it.
  4. My pediatrician suggested using it to control her moodiness. We have only been taking it a couple of weeks, but I think it has helped with this. Can't hurt to try it out.
  5. One suggestion would be to make it kid friendly. My biggest complaint with eating out is there is very little options for children (menus usually consist of burgers, chicken fingers and pizza). Good luck with your presentation.
  6. Ok I am going to take the other side here. I absolutely belive having a biopsy for my daughter was the right choice. In the case of a child, there is bound to be instances where they question whether they really have Celiac or not, and they likely will not remember the severity of their symptoms as they get older (or even the symptoms themselves). ...
  7. I have a picky 8 year old too, so I know that lunches can be a challenge. My suggestion is to buy a thermos. A couple of times a week I will make something for dinner that can be sent in her lunch, homemade soups, stews, shepards pie, etc. I think she gets better lunches now then before she was diagnosed. Another thing that helps us is when she...
  8. Count my daughter in for these symptoms. She's 8 now and still complains once and awhile about muscle aches, but much less than before going gluten free.
  9. My daughter had to have all of her back teeth capped before she was six years old. We also know of another child that it was their dentist that suggested they look into celiac disease, he tested positive even though he had zero GI symptoms.
  10. Hi Sandra, Welcome aboard. I'm in Calgary so I know the wait can be a long one. First off, be aware that your daughter needs to be eating gluten for any of the celiac tests to come back positive. Our pediatrician started off with a blood test for the celiac panel, which came back clearly positive, then referred us to a pediatric GI doctor. This...
  11. I love the idea of a gluten free restaurant, but please realize that the service still has to be there. We have a gluten free restaurant here that we used to eat at a couple of times a week. That was until some new owners took it over. They let go the only experienced waitress there so that you now need to have 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours for lunch or dinner...
  12. Don't mean to freak you out, but this could also be the start of puberty for her. She sounds like I used to feel occasionally before I started my periods at around that age. Just a thought.
  13. Check out the tylenol website. I know that in Canada all Tylenol products are gluten free.

    ARCHIVED Pharmacists

So my daughter has a cold. We went to the drug store and I brought a bottle of cold medicine up to the counter. The label looked ok, but I asked the pharmacist if it was gluten free. His response was that all liquid medicines are gluten free and they only ever use gluten to hold the tablets together. Oh, and any amount in a tablet would be small enough...
  15. Just wanted to share a wonderful incident that happened to us this weekend. We went to my mom's senior's center for their Christmas bazaar. Of course there was a ton of baking to be bought. I had just finished explaining to my daughter that she wouldn't be able to buy anything to eat there, when another senior came up to the bake sale table to drop off...
  16. As your daughter is asymptomatic, I would find it very important to have the biopsy done. If she has a definite diagnosis she may be less likely to test the diet as she gets older. Without any obvious symptoms upon eating gluten, she might be likely to ignore that she can't eat these foods. My daughter's biopsy was quick and painless, we were at the...
  17. Have you tried to get a second opinion. From the sounds of this doctor, I would probably look into it.
  18. She sounds exactly like my daughter was at that age. Her reactions were completely irrational and she would change moods at the slightest thing. Hang in there. Since she has been gluten free, this has gotten steadily better, still not perfect but a definite improvement. One of our tipoffs that she has been glutened is that we have a week or two...
  19. My daughters only tipoff was stomach aches. Her pediatrician was sure it was just growing pains until we brought her in because she was waking up in the night with pain. He ran the celiac test pretty sure it would come back negative but lo and behold, it was definitely positve. He was suprised because she had no nutritional deficiencies and was in the...
  20. I found with my daughter that for the first few months she hated every bread she tried. Now that it has been awhile since she has had regular bread, she seems to enjoy the gluten free types more. She really likes the Gluten Free Pantry sandwich bread. She was a picky eater too so I try to get her involved with cooking all the meals and this seems to...
  21. I would consider doing the biopsy. My daughter suffered no ill effects and having a definitive diagnosis was important to us so there may be less of a rebellion against the diet when she is older. You may also want to check if any of the gluten free food is tax deductible, in which case a formal celiac diagnosis may be needed. Be aware that if you...
  22. One of my daughters symptoms (we learned in hindsght) was the cavities. She had to have all of her back teeth capped and one pulled for an abcess - about $4,000 of dental work all before she was 5 years old. I also know of another child in our city that was diagnosed after his dentist suggested Celiac just from the condition of his teeth. I wouldn't...
  23. Hi, I am also in Calgary. My husband finds out his blood results on Friday so I should have a better idea of the adult wait times after that (we fully expect it to come back positive). For my daughter, she had the blood work come back positive in March, run by her pediatrician. After this we had a consult with a specialist at the Children's Hospital...
  24. We eat out a couple of times a month and so far have been very lucky. Before we go, I try to research a possible restaraunt and check their website to see if they have any allergy information. I also check with our local celiac chapter's website for suggestions of gluten free friendly places. We also discuss the importance of gluten free with the server...
  25. So my daughter has now been gluten free for 4 months (with only one major glutening that we know of) and this afternoon with have her first follow up appt with the GI doc since going gluten free. Any suggestions of questions to ask or what we should expect? I am mostly curious about testing for other allergies or intolerances, did your specialist help with...
