ShayFL's Achievements

  1. We have 2 Great Danes and 1 Standard Poodle. Danes are the best dogs all around with regard to temperment and activity level (unless you want a dog that needs loads of exercise). Danes sleep a lot. They just want to be loved. But they are BIG.

So I vote for poodle too. I have had a miniature and now a standard. They are great.

You could also opt for a labradoodle (no to low shed) or goldendoodle (ditto). The best of both worlds. :)

But they will need exercise so they dont get fat (labs, goldens and poodles). We throw a tennis ball for Lucy the poodle at least 2 times a day 15 - 30 minutes a pop.

  2. Mine went very well too. We went over to some friends and there were 13 of us total. There was a ton of food!! Huge turkey...stuffed of course. Mashed potatoes. Veggies. Fresh made bread. And other dishes (Columbians and Ukranians there). I dont know what the dishes were called....LOL

Anyway, at home I roasted a small turkey breast and cut off enough for myself. Wrapped the rest and put in the fridge. I put my portion in a baggie. I made steamed asparagus and pumpkin casserole (like sweet potato with pecan/sweet topping).

When I got there, I got two serving dishes from the host and put some of what I brought on those (therefore avoiding CC). When time to eat, I plated up at my own little sideboard with what remained in my dishes and my little baggie of turkey.

    No one noticed this.

I sat and ate foods that others were eating. :)

PLUS I could take my yummy leftovers home because no one ever dipped out of them. Add to the turkey breast in the fridge and I had food all day today!

  3. It's very individual.

Oatmeal will spike my BS, but the same amount of carbs in brown rice wont. It is weird. But certain foods spike my BS. White bread used to be the worst for me. Yet I could eat a custard with loads of sugar and not get the spike. For me it is food specific. Even certain "healthy" foods will do it (like carrots will spike me). With this said, I try to keep my carbs per meal at less than 30 and ideally around 25 (I dont count veggies as carbs unless they are starchy like squash or high in sugar like carrots). If I keep the carbs at that and dont eat the foods I know will spike me no matter how much I eat, my BS stays within range and I feel good.

I also exercise daily. No excuses.

I drink lots of water because water will clear excess sugar out of your blood. You pee it out.

I dont eat processed foods. I dont eat any flours ever (not even whole grain). They just spike me too much.

I just eat lots of veggies, low sugar fruits, squashes, sweet potatoes, meats, nuts & seeds and now my homemade yogurt.

Grains IMO are the biggest contributing factor to diabetes and heart disease. So I avoid them. Recently, I decided I would have a bit of rice, corn or quinoa like once or twice a month. But I find I dont really love them like I used to.

  4. I avoid soy. I make all my own food from scratch. I cannot eat chocolate at all. I get severe rebound depression. I have challenged it so many times and always regret it.

Any food can cause symptoms, you just have to eliminate/challenge to find out. It is no fun, but can be rewarding when you nail it down.

My genetic sister, you are on the right path. My migraines were the first to go and have not returned. :)

  5. I am just subbing the pumpkin for sweet potato and modifying an existing recipe. The top will be honey, almond flour, chopped pecans, vanilla, salt and coconut oil. The innards will be pumpkin, eggs, honey, vanilla, coconut milk and coconut oil.

I hope it turns out. The ingredients are all good and taste good....so should be delicioius!

  6. You and I have the same genes. I had ataxia, vertigo, migraines and neuropathy. GI was minimal.....just going 6 times a day.

My ataxia is nearly gone, vertigo is getting there, but the migraines, neuropathy and frequent BM's are all gone. :)

I am not a gene expert, but our genes predispose us to gluten sensitivity, grass allergy and a few others.

One of our genes is protective of T1 Diabetes. Genes have good and bad points.

  7. Hope everyone has a wonderful SCD Thanksgiving!! I am roasting a small turkey breast, making an SCD pumpkin casserole and steamed asparagus. We are going to friends. I will be eating my own delicious food and enjoying good conversation. :)

And today is my birthday and we went to Cheescake Factory where the manager is Celiac. He made a delicious Kobe burger for me, fresh steamed asparagus and a nice salad. :) No cake...but it didnt bother me at all.

    Cheers everyone!!

  8. Your adrenals sound completely shot (startle reflex and constant fear feeling) is a dead giveaway. Vitamins might not be enough. Ask about a very small physiologic dose of Hydrocortisone. This wouldnt be for life, just to let them heal. Ask your doctor.

Have they tested your thyroid? TSH, Free T4, Free T3 and both antibodies.

You sound pretty much like me 13 years ago.

I needed to rest my adrenals and supplement them to get them back on track. I also needed thyroid medication. B12. Iron (have them test your Ferritin if they have not already).

gluten-free was the final piece to the puzzle for me.

  9. I had palps, severe anxiety and racing thoughts on Synthroid. It was so bad one night I called 911. I thought I was having a heart attack. The paramedics were so nice to me. But that drug didnt agree with me At ALL!! And I was on a very low dose. I took it for a month and then got off it.

Armour agreed with me straight off. But me and my Doc. started low 15 mg (1/4 grain) and upped it by 15 mg every 2 weeks when symptoms would return. I would feel better then after a few weeks get the hypo symptoms again. When I got to 120 mg (2 grains) the raises got longer apart. I would go about 2 months then between raises. Got to 195 mg (3 1/4 grains) but then I really started hammering my Ferritin to get it up to snuff and I got a little hyper recently. So have dropped down to 3 grains and feel very good today. Just hyperish for about a week. Then I caught on and realized that the increased Ferritin was making my thyroid conversion from T4 to T3 more efficient and I didnt need as much medication. I expect I will need to reduce again as I get my Ferritin to "optimal" levels.

It is a balancing act and it can change after you think you have the right amount. For instance some women need an extra 15 mg the week before their period as thyroid is reduced then. Some also need an extra 15 mg or so in the winter months. Cold affects your thyroid and conversion of hormones. Menopause will change your requirements for thyroid.

Some Docs wont change your dosage as long as you are in the "normal" range. Countless millions suffer because of this. Best to find a really good Holistic Doc. who specializes in thyroid/hormonal issues. Trust me. Worth it even if you have to pay out of pocket.

If your Ferritin is too low, it might be very hard to get to a good level of thyroid hormone.

    Did they test your Ferritin?

Also, if you adrenals are deficient, you will get "hyper" feelings even on a very small amount of thyroid hormone (natural or synthetic). You wont actually be "hyper" but you will feel that way.

Did they test your cortisol levels?

    Parathyroid hormone levels PTH?

  10. Thank you for sharing and I am glad it worked for you. But some people could be putting themselves in grave danger by using this much sodium and even water in such a short amount of time.

Those with certain conditions such as Hypertension, Menier's Disease, Potassium deficiency and those on diuretics should NOT do anything like this. Please consult a doctor before you try anything like this.

  11. Give the Synthroid a go. But if it doesnt work for you after a reasonable amount of time, dont be afraid to ask for Armour.

I do great on straight Armour, but my Sister uses a combo of Synthroid and Armour and feels amazing.

Thyroid is tricky and there is no one drug that works perfectly for everyone. There are many options both natural and synthetic. It can take awhile to get it right. So be patient.

    And welcome to the club!

  12. Any type of medicine (allopathic or alternative) works best if you believe in it. I have tried acupuncture 3 times and it never did squat for me. So now I dont believe in it and will not waste $$$ there ever again.

Homeopathy worked for me once. I was having this weird thing happen every night when I went to bed. I would have to get up like 10 times to go pee whilst very little came out. It only happened at night when I first laid down. My M.D. who is Holistic gave me a homeopathic remedy to take before bed. That first night the peeing stopped. I took the remedy for a month and then discontinued. All fine.

But other times Homeopathy didnt work for me. So I have mixed feelings about it, but since it cannot hurt, I would be willing to use again.

But really.....like the Doc. says....use your instincts. If something sounds and feels like "hooey" to you, dont do it. It is less likely to work for you.

I have a good relationship with my Docs. I can just say "I dont believe in that" and they will say o.k. How bout.........something else. Or I can say, "that could work, but I think this would help me more." And they arent offended or upset. Teamwork!
