The manager at my local Cheescake is Celiac himself and so is his daughter. I didnt know this the first attempt and while accommodating, I got glutened. They werent careful and I got veggies thrown in pasta water. The manager picked up the tab for all 3 meals, drinks and desserts. But I got sick. Anyway, he told me if I would trust them again he... -

ShayFL replied to Person's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You do not need a doctor's permission to go on a gluten-free diet. So what if you dont get an official dx of Celiac? If the gluten-free diet makes you well.....you have your answer regardless of what type of label you want to call it (Celiac or Gluten Intolerant). BUT you need to be 100% gluten-free. No Wheat, Rye, Barley or Oats. Check everything... -
ARCHIVED Can Gluten Come From Other Sources?
ShayFL replied to mslee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only gluten that damages Celiacs comes from Wheat, Barley, Rye and contaminated oats. -

Did you guys know that there is no such thing as a "Cornish" hen? Those little birds are just chickens that are not fully grown yet. Kinda like veal (baby cows). That is why they are so very succulent. I am challenging "Corn" as we speak. If all goes well, I will make cornbread stuffing for TG. If not, it is sweet potato casserole. -
ARCHIVED My Journey
ShayFL replied to Not sure of anything's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your suspicion is correct. Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster. If you have one you are much more likely to have another. In my family it is hashimotos (thyroid) and psoriasis (skin). So sorry to hear of your health issues. How awful for you to suffer so much. Your endoscopy showed "some erosion" which might mean villi atrophy which would indicate... -

ARCHIVED Alkaline Phosphatase
ShayFL replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You really should get Vit D tested before supplementation. In general you can safely take 2000 IU a day without problems. But because Vit D stores in the body, you can overdose (which has it's own problems like bone loss). You need 15 minutes a day of full sunlight on 90% of your body in the tropics during the Spring/Summer months to get enough to make... -
ARCHIVED Is Tea Gluten Free?
ShayFL replied to dinali63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just as I thought...It is the tannins in the tea that are a GI irritant. Google: tannins + tea + gastrointestinal You will find lots of support for this. -
If you are open to it, I would suggest Acupuncture. It can open up energy blockages to different organs. I know many people who have benefited from it. And there have been many studies done on it and it is recognized by the AMA as a valid therapy. My insurance even covers mine. At this point for you, it would be worth a try. The needles are sooooo...

ARCHIVED Can A Breast And Formula Fed Baby Be Gluten Sensitive?
ShayFL replied to msosa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I D.O. or Chiropracter is a good idea. They are very very gentle with babies and I too know of a few who have had success with it. I believe in it myself. I had a pinched nerve for over a month that my regular doctors couldnt do anything about. 1 visit to the Chiro and it was better. By the 3rd visit I was all better. That was all I needed. 3. It... -
ARCHIVED Alkaline Phosphatase
ShayFL replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
They can find nodules...but they cannot tell if they are cancer or not. Sometimes they just "watch" them to see if they change. Sometimes they do a needle biopsy. In my Mom's case, thank g-d, cuz the needle biopsy showed her cancer. They caught it in time and she had her thyroid removed. My PTH was normal when my Vit D was in the toilet. So there are... -

Oh joy!! Have fun. At least the muffin liners will be in place so no worries about the pans. -
I always my whole life ate expired yogurt up to a week or so after expiration. Never had a problem. If kept cold, it should be just fine. After a week expired I would tend to use the yogurt in cooking then up to 2 weeks after expiry. You are fine.

ARCHIVED Oh Wow! Hi!
ShayFL replied to saraphym's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the club. We are happy to help. Hope he recovers quickly! Did you get DD tested for Celiac too? Her issues could be related. Also at least you or your hubby has the gene(s). You might think you dont have symptoms, but you would be surprised at how good you feel gluten-free if you are Celiac without knowing it and go on the diet. PLUS... -
ARCHIVED Can A Breast And Formula Fed Baby Be Gluten Sensitive?
ShayFL replied to msosa's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
2 things caused my daughter pain when I was BF. Garlic and Salsa. So I didnt eat them and all went well. If you have already eliminated all the gassy (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peppers, garlic, onions, beans) and hot/spicy (any red pepper, chili pepper, jalepenos, etc) and that has not worked then a gluten-free diet for you and strict BF would... -

ARCHIVED First Thanksgiving Gluten-free
ShayFL replied to Hummingbird4's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it were me, I think I would bake one of those small turkey breasts and take it with me. And maybe a sweet potatoe casserole. Those two things would be enough for me. And it would be simple. Make sure you get your food first. -
ARCHIVED Possible Insurance Issue For Celiacs Disease?
ShayFL replied to soon2beglutenfree's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Firstly, if you go gluten-free even for a week or 2 and then get tested they may ALL come back negative (a false negative). You DO NOT want that. So if you want to get tested you MUST keep eating gluten. Do not stop. Or it ruins the tests. They would be useless. Secondly, I am sure each insurance carrier has different rules about PECs. You might... -
ARCHIVED Alkaline Phosphatase
ShayFL replied to Mother of Jibril's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The liver makes more ALP than the other organs or the bones. Some conditions cause large amounts of ALP in the blood. These conditions include rapid bone growth (during puberty), bone disease (osteomalacia or Paget's disease), or a disease that affects how much calcium is in the blood (hyperparathyroidism), or damaged liver cells. If ALP is high, more... -
ARCHIVED Failure To Thrive
ShayFL replied to Mommy2Ellie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Me too. I hope gluten-free is the answer. Try cutting the dairy at least for a few months too to give her time to heal. Soy could also cause problems. Keep her with simple foods as much as possible. Meats, veggies, fruits, nut butters, rice cakes, rice, sweet potatoes and winter squash are excellent and kids usually like them. -

You sure love your sweet liquidy yummies dont you? What are the ingredients? And you know...sometimes other things make us feel bad. For instance, I started taking a new vitamin C yesterday, so today it is the big D. Vitamin C can do that to you. And Tamarind fruit will give me literally non-stop D for 24 hours. Scary D. Maybe you are... -
ARCHIVED Add In Adults, Insomnia
ShayFL replied to wsieving's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It is just a "healing" process. Think of a cut. It hurts at first (symptoms) then you clean it and take care of it (but it doesnt heal instantly)....it is sore at first (where you are now) and with time it gradually gets better till t is all gone. -
