ARCHIVED Gi Dr. Said I Definitely Have Celiac Disease
ShayFL replied to jade08's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You insurance may REQUIRE biopsy for the genetic testing to be ordered. However, if you dont want a biopsy, you should not be forced to have one. If you can afford it, you can have genetic tests through Kimball or Enterolab yourself. A cheek swab is all. And your little ones could have the cheek swab tests done also. This is if you want to bypass your... -
ARCHIVED Rice Milk .002% Gluten From Barley
ShayFL replied to BarbaQ's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldnt give it to him. I struggled for a long time to find a "milk" I actually like. Mostly I make my own almond or hazelnut milk. But I do buy this brand. We all like it and it is good to cook/bake with : Open Original Shared Link -
I think it is doable to have a "mixed" household. But FLOUR is the worst!! That fine powder gets EVERYWHERE!!! You have to make her understand this. My family absolutely LOVES the gluten-free goodies I make for them (brownies, choco chip cookies, banana bread, etc.). My daughter has proclaimed that my gluten-free homemade foods taste better. She says...

ARCHIVED New To The Gluten-free Diet
ShayFL replied to my3girls's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
2 weeks is def. too short. AND most have to eliminate dairy for awhile too until they heal. I would eliminate both for a good 3 months and then re-evaluate. Ferritin can take a long time to improve. I started at 11 and am now at 19. You will likely need supplements. But focus on gluten-free and CF for now. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Say To The Server In A Restaurant?
ShayFL replied to MrsManners's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
They have Triumph Dining Cards. But as I learned today....sadly....that you shouldnt just talk to the server. You MUST ask for the Manager. The Manger will make sure it is done right. Servers generally wont. It is basically a crap shoot when your health is the hands of others. For instance, today, I ate out with my family. They miss it so and I wanted... -

ShayFL replied to Beth in NC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Beth get the Triumph Dining Cards. I have them. But have not used them yet. They have one for Mexican. On the front is English....on the back Spanish. Thank you for praying for me. So far, just some mild "sinking floating feelings". Last time I got glutened it was 2 days of vertigo. Believe me. I am praying too!!! -

ARCHIVED Butcher's Section Of The Grocery Store
ShayFL replied to Beth in NC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sometimes it gets so overwhelming doesnt it? You think......what will it all come to.....me in waders out catching my own fish for goodness sakes!!! Grow my own vegetables and fruits....buy some chickens....raise some pigs..... I dont know if rinsing them off will be good enough. Only you can decide if you want to risk it. I agree, that you should... -

ARCHIVED Peach Cobbler - Family Loves It!
ShayFL replied to dbmamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make my own yogurt. I use raw almonds (1 cup almonds to 6 cups water) pureed in my Vitamix for 10 minutes (which gets it the right temp.), add 2 tlb honey, yogurt starter and pour into cups for my yogurt maker. It takes only 8 hours. My machine has a timer. -
ARCHIVED Positive Tissue Transglutaminase Iga Test
ShayFL replied to oogachick's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Biopsy is NOT necessary. The only real way to tell if you have a gluten problem (when you have symptoms) is to go on a gluten free diet. For the lucky (like yourself) you can get a Dx with just bloodwork. Biopsies are often neg. because damage can be spotty. If they dont take samples from the right places, it wont show villa damage. You are SMART and... -
ARCHIVED Glutenfree Pets: Rats, Anyone With Experience?
ShayFL replied to Blondie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Rats are naturally scavengers. They live in sewers and eat whatever they can find. You could feed him gluten free dog food. Better nutrition there than they get in the wild. And supplment with fresh fruits and veggies now and again. -
ARCHIVED All The Symptoms
ShayFL replied to mirabella's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, they can be damaged from other food sensitivities as well. The big culprits are: Gluten, Dairy and Soy If you are that sick, I suggest eliminating these foods for awhile to see if you get better. It sounds like you have nothing to lose right now. You can challenge them at a later date to see if they cause symptoms. Hope you feel better soon... -
ARCHIVED Advice For My Little Nephew?! Neg. Bloodwork
ShayFL replied to Cath724's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, they should request a copy of the bloodwork. It is always a good idea to keep a file of your own medical records at home. Then let us know what they were. And yes, you can def. have negative blood and still have Celiac. It is EXTREMELY difficult to dx Celiac in young children as there are often false negatives. If they can afford it, they can... -
ARCHIVED Test Results, Please Help
ShayFL replied to wendylu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I dont think he was connecting the two. With your family history, I do have to ask why you dont get annual pap smears? Cervical cancer is the easiest to treat when found early. He may not know jack about Celiac, but I think his advice to get your cervix checked wasnt something he "mentioned in passing". Go get it checked!!!! If you feel better... -
