  1. i went to a wedding a few weeks ago and i went ahead of time and talked to the hotel where the food was being prepared. they were able to go through the entire menu and we discussed what i'd be able to eat. the only problem was the woman forgot to mention the gluten-filled sauce they slathered all over the beef! i had to send it back and get a new plate...
  2. i'll second (and third!) a coffee shop and pizza place. i'd love to have a restaurant nearby (that is not outrageously priced) where i can get some yummy bread and pizza!
  3. that's great Jessica! what an awesome deal i went shopping too...not for any of the big ticket items but i got some good deals nonetheless. i love Black Friday!
  4. welcome to the board! you'll find a ton of info and get a lot of support here. one thing i didn't realize at first when i started the diet is that gluten is hidden everywhere. at first i thought i'd be ok if i just avoided bread and pasta....not the case! there can still be traces of gluten, sometimes to do flavoring or spices. i personally look up...
  5. i was just going to post a similar question! i'm asking for a bread machine for Christmas but i don't want my family to spend a ton of money (we're all trying to spend less this year, like so many other people). i've read good things about the Zojirushi brand but they're all pretty pricey ($170-$200). the Breadman (TR875) seems like a great machine...
  6. so how did the interview go??
  7. i sympathize with you. i wouldn't want to be in a wedding if i didn't particularly like the bride and/or wasn't very close to her. the only wedding i was in was a few years ago and i was the maid of honor. my best friend (at the time) had asked me to be in her wedding right after she got engaged. but we were just out of HS so the wedding didn't happen...
  8. you can buy/sell/trade gift cards...Open Original Shared Link. i've never tried it but you can get straight up cash (albeit, less than the value of the card) or you can find someone who wants an Outback card to trade for another restaurant or sell it outright.
  9. i agree with others who suggest you put a positive spin on your situation. show your interviewer how your health has taken a turn for the better and how it was due to a "simple" change in your diet. no meds required! i also think that Celiac awareness is on the rise and you'd be surprised how many people know someone with it. i went on a job interview...
  10. my boyfriend has commented on numerous occasions that he loves music with piano solos or accompaniment so i want to put together a compilation of some great songs. one of his favorites is "This Year's Love" by David Gray. ( ) it might be a long shot but does anyone have any favorites they can recommend? i'm looking for modern songs with lyrics that...
  11. it sure can't hurt to ask your doctor to run a Celiac panel, especially if other tests have come back negative or inconclusive. you don't need to have diarrhea to have Celiac. i did, but i also had joint pain, acne, fatigue, weight gain and mood swings. talk to your doctor and if they brush you off, find a new doctor!
  12. oh man, i'm sorry you had such a crappy experience. i hope you get some kind of positive response from Carnival. let us know what they say!
  13. definitly a conversation worth having. i would not want to show up at a dinner party and not know if i could eat anything! i'd probably be inclined to keep it short and sweet unless they inquire about details. i would probably say that i have food allergies, i can't have gluten (which is wheat, barley and rye) and then ask what's on the menu. there...
  14. my doctors were all but convinced i had rheumatoid arthritis but the tests always came back negative. there was even some talk of fibromyalgia and going on Cymbalta to see if i got better but i opted not to. i often wonder if i would have ended up with RA had i not been diagnosed with Celiac. (well, i guess i still could but i like to think i caught it...
  15. after about 4 months, i've only dropped 13 lbs. (ideally, i'd like to lose at least 25 more.) the weight i have lost so far is due to a change in diet. initially after i was diagnosed, i was gobbling up all the replacement food i could find (breads, pastas, baked goodies) but it was just making me feel bloated and icky so since getting away from all those...
  16. i had hip pain for nearly a year before being diagnosed with Celiac. i underwent numerous blood tests, physical therapy and cortisone injections before finally giving up and resigning myself to a life of pain. Since going gluten-free 4 1/2 months ago, the pain is nearly gone with virtually no more flair-ups.
  17. my sister's birthday is this weekend and she wants to go Red Lobster. my boyfriend and i live 2 hours away but have been invited to join the rest of my family for dinner. from some of the old posts i've read on here, it appears Red Lobster is a pretty bad restaurant choice. it would be nice to go since i don't get to see my sister much anymore but i'm...
  18. were you consuming gluten at the time the blood was drawn? if you had stopped eating gluten for 3 weeks and then had the blood taken, the results could be inaccurate.
  19. ok, i'll jump on the bandwagon too! i don't know what i would do without this board. i've learned so much in 4 months and i know i'd be glutening myself all the time if not for all the good tips i've read. i tell everyone i know about how much of a resource and a support this is. one of my friends is currently awaiting her blood test results and she...
  20. well i don't have any money to loan ya but i'd totally eat at your restaurant!
  21. For those in northern NY and VT...Dr. Peter Green will be at SUNY Plattsburgh to talk about all things celiac on Thursday. Here's the blurb i found online... Peter Green, MD, the man who "wrote the book" on Celiac Disease is coming to Plattsburgh Thursday, November 13. Dr. Green, the director of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University and author...
  22. gluten can be hidden in so many unlikely foods so while you were trying to be gluten-free, there's a good possibility that you were still getting it from somewhere. try shopping the perimeter of the store when you go shopping. most of the foods in the middle aisles are processed and contain some form of gluten. there are some companies that are very...
  23. Jenny, that's exactly how i've always boiled eggs but i've been having so many problems lately! maybe it's just my eggs but it's still interesting to see everyone else's methods!
  24. i did the cold water, bring to a boil, remove from heat, cover and sit for 20 min, run cold water until eggs have cooled then peel method. i had about 80% success. 2 of 10 eggs look pretty bad but at least i didn't have to throw any away. i'll try the Backyard Poultry magazine method next time with older eggs. (i had to use fresh eggs this time that...
  25. i actually use Celiac as my excuse to stay home from such functions! i normally don't look forward to big family gatherings like Thanksgiving just because there are usually so many people involved and it's such a competition to have a conversation without getting interrupted a million times. seems silly but i much prefer a smaller gathering with just my...
