  1. I don't have a problem with any vinegars.
  2. There is a Garlic Jim's near us. I'm kind of afraid to try it, but I am really missing pizza... a lot. I could make my own but sometimes you're just TIRED of cooking, ya know?
  3. I'm always amazed when I tell someone that I cannot have gluten (wheat, rye, barley) and then they say, "Oh, do you have Celiac Disease?" And I'm thinking, "Wow, they get it!!!!"
  4. Yes! I rarely used to eat chips. I would never buy them and keep them in the house. Now I eat them A LOT! I know I need to stop, but I feel deprived from not being able to eat other things, so chips have become my substitute. Like you, I will back away from the chip bag at some point, but right now I'm not ready.
  5. My GI doctor told me to pay attention to what I eat: to buy foods that specifically say gluten free, and to avoid anything with gluten in the ingredient listing. But not to worry too much if a knife touches a piece of bread and then touches my food. He said a bigger concern is cross-contamination in the manufacturing process. https://www.celiac.com/articles...
  6. I don't have any direct experience, but as a recently diagnosed Celiac who has a son that just moved to college over the weekend, I really feel for you! It was hard for me just to travel, let alone be required to eat in the cafeteria. My son shows no signs of Celiac - hopefully will stay that way.
  7. I was shocked and angry. Throw some disbelief in there, too. I had thought I had an ulcer. The diagnosis of a lifetime of avoiding gluten, and the explanation of just how difficult a diet it is to follow, made me very unhappy. Since then, I've come to accept it, but I'm still not pleased.
  8. That's not butting in at all! He did come to my defense when she made that "fussy" comment. But then he promptly forgot about it and didn't notice anything else she did or said. When I mentioned how upset I was (with MIL) on the drive home, he seemed surprised.
  9. I did end up helping my doc buy his yacht . Went to the followup appointment yesterday and didn't get much out of it. Well, I did get a copy of my lab & pathology reports, so that was useful. He encouraged me to stick with foods specifically labeled as gluten-free to avoid CC from the manufacturing process, but when I asked him how careful I...
  10. I had pain in my upper stomach, right in the center under my sternum. It would come and go. After a few weeks of this pain, which got worse after eating, I scheduled an endoscopy because I was sure I had an ulcer. Lo and behold, the diagnosis was Celiac, which shocked the heck out of me. Then I had a blood test which was also positive. No classic...
  11. It's only been a few weeks, but my kitchen is completely gluten-free. I have a DH, a 15 y.o. DD, and a 17 y.o. DS who is leaving for college next week. I do the vast majority of the shopping and the cooking. The kids do dishes. So far it's been OK.... The trouble I'm finding is when people give you things - like my stepmom gave my DH a pie for his...
  12. Oh shoot, I forgot about that. I probably got CC'd last night then. Thanks, everyone for your understanding. I was surprised at my MIL's reaction, because my FIL was gluten free for a couple of years due to Crohn's disease, and she cooked gluten-free for him. So she knows the ins & outs of cooking & baking gluten-free, but they weren't super...
  13. Grrrrrrr, my mother-in-law made me so mad tonight! We did end up going to her house after all. She said that the salad she made was gluten-free, and so was the chicken salad my sister-in-law brought. Great, right? After we got there I could tell that MIL was in a "mood," and she asked me if I could eat something that had been mixed in a bowl that had...
  14. I am so frustrated. It's been almost 3 weeks since I "decontaminated" my kitchen. The rule we all decided on was no gluten in the kitchen. Sounds doable, right? Today is my husband's birthday, and we were planning to go to my in-laws for dinner. My stepmom gave my DH a pie last night. I didn't want the pie in my gluten-free kitchen, so we were...
  15. I was essentially asymptomatic, too. I say "essentially" because for about 6 weeks last spring, I had on-again-off-again upper stomach pains that I thought was an ulcer, and that's why I went for my endoscopy (and resulting biopsy). I don't know if those pains correlated with eating gluten, because I ate gluten all the time. After my diagnosis, I went...
  16. I'm two weeks into gluten-free living. I had been pretty much asymptomatic before starting gluten-free. The first week, I felt rather bloated and gassy most days, which I found rather troubling. So after 8 days, I cut out dairy to see what would happen. I do feel better now, but of course I'm hoping that dairy will be a temporary elimination, and I'll...
  17. I'm thinking that a followup visit in 6 months is probably a better idea. Surely my antibody levels haven't changed much in 3 weeks of being gluten free. I wasn't anemic to begin with (hemoglobin was 12), and I did not have any iron studies or chemistry panels done.
  18. I found Redbridge and New Grist at Whole Foods. Warning, they are expensive ($9 for a 6-pack of Redbridge, $10 for New Grist). I bought the Redbridge and it's pretty tasty!
  19. I am in Oregon. Do you have any support groups near you? There is a support group in my area and I believe they are meeting tomorrow morning. I'm trying to muster up the courage to go.
  20. I wasn't really having symptoms to start with, and after 8 days of being gluten-free, I feel worse. I have bloating, gas, and just feel very blue. Also, I've gained a few pounds that I did NOT need to gain. I'm hoping it's just a transitionary thing, but right now I'm bummed out. I feel your pain, glutenfreegirl.
  21. That's kind of what I was getting at. I'd rather not spend the time and a $20 copay if it's not necessary. I wasn't having symptoms, so I haven't noticed any positive dietary changes at this time. I don't know what I could possibly discuss with the doc that I can't just discuss with you wonderful people! And since you're living with it, you probably...
  22. I was diagnosed celiac at the end of June, at which point my GI doc referred me to a dietician and said I should come back to see him in a month. I put off my follow-up appointment until August 20th because I didn't start the gluten-free diet until a few days ago, due to a planned European vacation and no symptoms. I did meet with a dietician last week...
  23. My doctor is the other direction from you - he's Dr. Lake at Hillsboro Gastroenterology. You definitely do NOT want to drive from Boring to Hillsboro. The Hwy 26 traffic would make you crazy!
  24. Sounds like you are doing great! I am on Day 2 also. So far, so good. I wasn't having any symptoms anyway, so I can't say that I feel any different at all! I had a little pity party for myself today though, but I snapped out of it. And I talked to my sister, who recently had the blood test which came back negative. Hooray for her! Tomorrow we have...
  25. Hi there Jessica! I officially started gluten-free today too. Although I have eaten gluten-free the past few days, but today is my OFFICIAL start-date. Best of luck to you - and I hope this is the answer you have been looking for! I have the Gluten-free for Dummies book too; also, the Gluten-Free Bible (which I just started reading). I have learned...
