  1. Back to the main question about whether it is fair of me to request that Rye not be planted due to my "allergies." What do you guys think? Thank you for the information about the prairie grasses. That along with native wildflowers is the long range plan, however the soil was aggressively disturbed due to two reckless homeowners. Now we are left with a...
  2. Our subdivision is trying to restore a prairie area. As of tonight, I am on a committee to help with the decision making process for how to restore the area in an ecologically sound way. The area is a common trail area about 3 acres away from my house. One proposal I heard someone suggest was to put rye down. We tabled the discussion until another meeting...
  3. I found this on Medscape. Since the site is password protected, I'll post a quote from the review of the study. "November 29, 2010 (Denver, Colorado)
  4. I'm not looking forward to flying at all either. I've seen the breast milk mom video and am seriously wavering on flying or driving this holiday. Being pregnant, I don't think I can do the 14 hour drive to my in-laws in one day and we don't have enough time away from my husband's job to do it in 2 days. Thus, I'm stuck flying and getting the grope down since...
  5. The TSA website states "Additionally, we are continuing to permit prescription liquid medications and other liquids needed by persons with disabilities and medical conditions. This includes: Liquids including water, juice, or liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition;" I have my physician letter stating that I am...
  6. Just adding another voice to the stay on gluten, get the celiac panel, consider a biopsy, and after testing is completed definately start a strict gluten free trial diet for at least 3 months. You're symptoms sound like mine and you may want to consider talking mom into eliminating gluten alltogether as well.
  7. A couple of thoughts. Some Speech Language Pathologists (speech therapists) specialize in neonatal feeding as well. I don't have any idea about the effects of antibodies in breast milk on a non-celiac infant, but I would suspect the malabsorption would have similar effects that the malnutrition of an anorexic mother would have. I have to image that there...
  8. I got glutened three times in the first few months of this pregnancy. I did them all to myself unfortunately. We ended up going back to a gluten free household. The first time was too early to feel baby. The second two times, I was just starting to feel baby several times a day. She stopped moving for about 4 days both times. I'm pretty sure she felt as crummy...
  9. I agree that she is very suspious for Dementia. There are other forms of dementia besides Alzheimer's that are less common, but treatable (I'm thinking normal pressure hydrocephalus). Talk to her doctor and let the doc know your concerns and let her know that your mother would be upset with you for talking to your doctor. The doc may have a way of approaching...
  10. It's a 45 minute drive to the shopping plazas and the 5 guys. I'm thinking of an excuse to head down that way now.
  11. I also have long thick hair. I think long thick dark hair is just more noticable wrapped around a ponytail, on the bathroom floor, or in the shower drain. I never noticed thinning patches or clumps of hair falling out while on gluten. 3 months after going gluten free, my hair in the front center of my head started getting thin and my hairdresser commented...
  12. For me, the twilight was the best option. I did feel the scope 2x. I suspect it was when they were taking it in and out. It felt like pressure, not pain. Maybe like swallowing a bite of food that was way too big. Other than that, I was asleep for the whole procedure. I did have a couple days of heartburn though. It was similar when I had my wisdom teeth out...
  13. For my body, it would be a risk at many restaraunts. Any time there is a large table of people, or during lunch/dinner rush, the kitchen gets busy and mistakes are more likely to happen. I am very sensitive to CC and seem to be unable to manage meals that others might be fine with. I would take my own meal into the restaraunt in a small container. In...
  14. I've thought about this too. If a service dog can be trained to smell cancer and alert for seizures, why not wheat? I've never heard of such a dog, but it would sure make socializing out of the house easier. Now, how to get that pup from eating the hamburger you suspect was contaminated. It will be interesting to see what you learn.
  15. A lot of us go through a period of having sugar issues. Mine come back every time I get glutened. It seems the more sugar/carbs I eat, the more I want. The best advice I have is to avoid the sugars and carbs and stick with high protien, veggies, and healthy fats for a week or two. That will likely reduce the cravings. Then reintroduce slowly fruits and corn...
  16. I asked my husband for a 2 month trial of a gluten-free house. I found I could isolate my accidental cross contamination better that way. It also greatly reduced my anxiety levels. Then after about 3 months, I started letting him buy his own bread. I taught him about cross contamination, but he still did things accidentally that made me anxious. I don't think...
  17. While yes, you have to ingest the gluten for it to cause a reaction, my personal experience was that I wound up with reactions to my blush and to body lotions. I assume that I either inhaled or ingested some of the blush while applying makeup. Our eyes are connected to our tear ducts which are directly connected to our digestive system. The technical answer...
  18. Tell her you appreciate her thoughfulness and her efforts. Tell her you know how stressful preparing a big meal is. Tell her that you would love to cook WITH her another time, but that this big holiday meal is not the time to practice cooking gluten free. Let her know that you love her and know she loves you and that all you want is her company for the holidays...
  19. I agree, talk to the doctor's office and get some samples to start you out. Usually there are more than one manufacturer of generics and you can shop around from pharmacy to pharmacy to see which ones don't have gluten. I know it is a pain, but I've been able to locate gluten-free versions of generics that way. I actually was lucky enough to have my regular...
  20. Loey, I didn't mean to imply that we could go gluten free for a while and then reintroduce gluten. What I was hoping to express was that until all the cross contamination is out of your diet for a good length of time, it might be difficult to identify accidental glutenings. For example, until I went meat, veggies, rice/potatoes cooked at home in my...
  21. Thaw the birds in a bowl or sink of cool water. Change the water frequently. Water conducts heat/cold faster than air, so this process is faster. Don't leave it in the sink all day while you are at work. That's a recipe for food poisoning. Just do it in the evening when you get home. Once the birds thaw enough to pull the giblets out, you can run more cool...
  22. I'm sorry you are going through this stress again. Raven's right. Stress can really affect your cycle. My periods will start on a weekend all but once or twice a year dispite being somewhat irregular (4-6 weeks). I know it is the stress of the work week that makes my body wait to ovulate until the weekend. Unfortunately with celiac, our fertility really...
  23. I understand the urge to have a cheat day. I had the same urges early on in my diagnosis and I think all of us wish for the unabandoned joy of gluten junkies at a fun event. You said this day of cheating changed your mind about wanting to cheat on holidays. That is good. Stick with that plan and remember how crummy you feel when you get gluten. In reading...
  24. I ran out of eggs while making the devil's food cake the other day. Instead of 3, I used 2 eggs and some Ener-G. The cake was definately more dry. My guests said it was light and fluffy, but I found it dry and lacking something. I did add extra grapeseed oil to make up for the fat lost in the egg yolk. I would think that undercooking the cake a little, and...
  25. It makes me nuts that my new grocery store puts the gluten-free foods with the organic whole wheat products. A big bank of gluten-free and whole wheat all mixed in together. One product I want to buy sits right next to a bag of Wheat Gluten. I find myself wiping down a lot of my cans and bags before I open them just to get the paranoia off them.
