  1. I bought a number of these and tested them on my kids. Their number one favorite is Genisoy's Xtreme Peanut Butter Fix. The regular Genisoy Peanut Butter one is okay, but not nearly as good. (Since I am also price conscious, I didn't try any of the ones over $1.50. Geez, some of these are EXPENSIVE.) Oh, I called Balance and, though it's not stated on...
  2. (Disclaimer: I'm not a teenager but I sometimes fix lunch for my teenager to take to school... ) I sometimes make rollups out of soft corn tortillas for my son. We like La Bandarita brand best. Heat them up a little in the microwave, add a piece of cheese, melt a little, add a couple thin slices deli meat (Hillshire farms is gluten-free except their...
  3. I also firmly believe that gluten does effect our emotions, maybe not with all people, but in my family, absolutely. My 15 year old explains it like this. No gluten, life if fine. With gluten, life sucks. He says he can literally feel his whole body becoming slow and depressed, which makes him think about how awful life is having to be gluten-free and having...
  4. I've been to Chili's quite a few times since going gluten-free. Their salsa is okay, if you go along with the idea that distillation removes the gluten. I believe Chili's has erred on the side of caution in their gluten-free list. I react with migraines about 1/2 hour after eating anything with gluten and have yet to have a reaction to anything I've eaten...
  5. I have Reynard's also, but I also have nerve damage to my hands and arms (but thankfully not to my feet!) I never had the pain until the nerve damage happened. As far as the cold, during the winter I take very hot showers sometimes 2-3xs a day just to warm back up. I need a hot tub! Marielynor, with celiac disease, one of the problems with not getting...
  6. I'm afraid I take advantage of the Atkins fad. So many restaurants have low carb menus that are basically just bread free meals. If I know a restaurant has one, I'll ask for it and not even bother offering gluten-free information. I've learned a few key things to stay away from and have had pretty good luck at most restaurants. (Unchecked I never order: Barbacue...
  7. JamieK, Thanks for your comment! I'm going to a fancy holiday DINNER party this Saturday and have been wondering how to go about eating and not making it a big, gluten-free deal (as my kids call it. ) My husband is getting the catering company's name as I type and I'll be giving them a call shortly. Veggf, about bringing cake for you and others...My...
  8. I don't know, maybe it's having had 3 kids, or maybe it's the having 3 kids, but where I once was shy and reluctant to step into the spotlight (for whatever reason) I'm now perfectly willing to talk about anything. If someone voices an interest in knowing more about celiac disease or gluten intolerance/sensitivity/whatever! I'll start off with the ultra...
  9. Sorry, but yes, this is a sign of it. Gluten sensitivity with or without celiacs can cause nerve damage and one of the first signs of this is tingling and/or numbness in the extremeties. I have it in my hands, but it's mostly only now in my right hand and arm (woke me up three times last night ). It can even be painful, but generally, my hand my hurt, but...
  10. Dad - Danish Mom - English (but Colonial American kind, too, Ryebaby0) I have it, my three kids have it (their father is a German, French Canadian and who-knows American). One of my sisters have it and one nephew of a different sister, and we suspect MANY others in my family have it but no one is interested in getting tested. I suspect my mom...
  11. We are our own worst critics! I learned some years ago that no matter what I weigh, when I look at myself in the mirror I look like me. Sounds silly, but I see no weight loss when I lose. I see no weight gain when I gain. I always look slightly overweight with blobby hips. Now, I'm about 140 lbs, 5'9" and am a size 6 to 8, the least I've weighed since high...
  12. I still have pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in my hands that radiates up to my elbow, mostly on my right side, but it hasn't gotten any worse (while in the year prior to going gluten-free it'd gone from being just in my hand.) Also, it hasn't started happening my feet or going up to my shoulder, which seem to be next in the progression. I'm thankful...
  13. After 8 months I can say that the numbness and tingling in my arms and hands (pretty much my right arm and hand) hasn't decreased much if at all. HOWEVER, my sister, who isn't on a gluten-free diet and with whom I'd told about the hand problem 8 months ago (she said she has the exact same thing) just called a couple days ago because she noticed she's beginning...
  14. My husband is just as good with needles. Poor men! Anyway, from what you said, this caught my attention: Did you mean that your daughter tested positive? If she did, she should be on a gluten-free diet. Her symptoms sound very typical for children with celiac disease, though being of Asian descent does make her case a little unusual. If her blood...
  15. For cereal and coffee I use the No Sugar Added Silk soymilk. I really like it, though it does take a little getting used to, especially if you're used to the sweetened soymilks (which I can't use at all now. Way too sweet!) Also, I just found (at Wholefoods) Westsoy Brand makes a No Sugar Added chocolate soymilk. This is sooooo good. Even to drink straight...
  16. For macaroni and cheese all three of my kids like Pastato brand. Since they couldn't ever come to an agreement before, even before going gluten-free, this is so wonderful for me. The cooking directions are off on the regular elbow white cheddar kind anyway (says to cook it for 3 minutes when 10 is more like it.) I buy this by the case. For regular spaghetti...
  17. I think that, especially in your case, remaining on a gluten-free diet is more than necessary. By eating gluten, wont you be doing more damage to your already damaged intestines? And, since you do not heal, you would be doing irrepairable damage. Btw, what is the SCDiet?
  18. I'm just being really careful because I've made two rocks and one sunken loaf in the last two days. Did you really mean 3 TEASPOONS of sugar? Most of my recipes call for 2-3 tablespoons of sugar. I'm hoping to try this today or tomorrow.

    ARCHIVED Uno's

Last night my teenage son went with a few friends to Unos, someplace he's not gone to since being diagnosed, but a good friend who'd moved away was in town and loved the place. He was very careful, asked the waiter to check on the cheese fries (he thought these might be safe) and the waiter did. Said they were gluten free! So, he had them (ate half the platter...
  20. I've been gluten-free for 8 months now. Only within the last few weeks have I noticed that I can actually drink an entire glass of red wine without feeling like I've overdone it. My intolerance for alcohol began about 15 years ago when (geez, just gotta love hindsight) my celiac disease symptoms became pretty obvious. I'm not expecting or wanting to ever...
  21. Metamucil is gluten-free, it's just psyllium husks, too. I've been using the orange flavored one (I make awesome gluten-free pancakes/waffles with eggs, flaxmeal and this that everyone, even non CDers really like...Only, I didn't check on the orange flavoring! It's been a while since I've made these and I wasn't completely up on checking everything when I...
  22. Thank you, Mariann! Hmm, we use a lot of soy here too, how did your husband discover he was getting too much? (I'm beginning to think I need to go back to school and get a degree in nutrition!)
  23. Sunshine, could you post the link where it talks about the gluten-free class? I searched and became totally bogged down and found nothing about it (age and children are conspiring to make me feel computer inept ) It sounds like it could be a fun trip!
  24. I finally got over to the asian market and found very easily, the two flours. $.75 here! I then got home and mixed the three together (sifting and such 3-4xs) until my toaster was white instead of metallic and my black shirt was definitely gray (that seemed good enough.) Now I can't wait to try it! I'm going to try a bread recipe today (since no one...
  25. Someone on another thread mentioned that flaxmeal has a lot of estrogen in it. Does this mean I should NOT be giving this to my two boys? I've been using it lately to replace bran and for the omega-3 it contains, but I've two growing boys and a 6 year old daughter. (I'm really not up on all this stuff and am worried now! ) SO CONFUSED!
