  1. I have noticed that some of the products say "no gluten ingredients".... others say "no gluten". I think that they really try to label their products honestly and will indicate when foods are processed at places processing wheat. I have never gotten sick from the products that say "no gluten". I have never tried the "no gluten ingredient" products.
  2. I tried it in the bread machine and it was terrible!!! I only use the sandwich bread for my bread machine..... it is ok, though has lots of big air pockets!
  3. I would say you were very lucky.... I just drive by the Red Lobster near my home and get glutened!!!!It is good to know that some places actually have personnel who LISTEN and then ACT on what they have heard. I hope you tipped really well!!!!
  4. The middle of Iowa... hmmmmmmm.... Iowa has a chain store called HyVee and they have quite an extensive gluten-free list of store brand foods. I have the Clan Thompson Listings on my computer and HyVee is listed with a whole lot of foods. Also I visit the HyVee in Marshalltown, IA (pretty much in the middle of Iowa) and they have a nice assortment of gluten...
  5. Just an add on to the above comment. I saw my friend today and she was showing me pics of the trip. It looked wonderful. They did travel on the Viking Cruise. She suggested that you get as much in writing (Russian) about your food restrictions as there were few people (I think she said NONE) on the boat who spoke English well enough to understand your...
  6. My friend and her husband did that cruise in the opposite direction (St Pete to Moscow). They had a great time. I don't envy you trying to do it with celiac disease. She said most of the food was gluten based.... I hope that someone in the know listens to your concerns. I don't mean to sound negative but I would sure think about bringing along as much...
  7. BUT are they gooey???????????
  8. I received much the same response from Cub Foods, a large grocery chain in midwest.... (could be other places, but I have only seen it in midwest). I thanked them for their response and let them know that I would be doing most of my shopping at the Super WalMart where foods are clearly marked gluten-free. Maybe we need to just stop shopping the chains that...
  9. Just curious what did Mayo do to get your system on the right path????
  10. I am glad to see that some of you have had some success with acupuncture. I tried it (sans Insurance) and it was not helpful and the cost was over the top.... several times a week for several months. I went for nueropathy and would have continued had there been some improvement. Good luck.
  11. It is hard to say. Pre-diagnosis, I was sick ALL the time. Post-diagnosis, I feel great except when I accidentally am glutened. My body feels sicker, I think, because now I am feeling so good that those times when I am glutened, it just hits me harder. Before I had 3 ways to feel.... sick, sicker, and sickest! Now when I am glutened, I just go to sickest...
  12. I never related this to celiac disease but it could be. sometimes my eyes feel as though they are alergic to my tears.... stinging eyes and somewhat blurry vision..... Actually I am experiencing it now, along with really bloodshot eyes... and I think I was glutened on Thurs (stomach distress after eating out - at PF Changs)
  13. I was diagnosed at 55! I would listen to the doc and be very grateful that you have a doctor who knows about celiac disease and how to read the results of the blood tests as well as test for all the vitamin and mineral deficiencies. No matter how much family members might think they know, unless they have celiac disease or live with someone who does, they...
  14. I don't think that you can blame the manager. Most blue cheese and blue cheese dressings do not list Wheat as an ingredient even thought they are made from the mold on the bread. With the new rules concerning listing of ingredients that may change. But until they make a blue cheese dressing that states that it is NOT made from the mold on bread, you may...
  15. Try eliminating ALL of the gluten-free processed foods that you are eating. I know that is a major downfall for me!
  16. I think that there is a major link between celiac disease and many other disorders. Some are direct links; others are a result of your body not having the strength to fight off diseases. Face it, when we were eating G, we were basically destroying the part of our body that was absorbing the vitamins and minerals our bodies needed to remain healthy. Since...
  17. I crave KFC EXTRA CRISPY chicken wings. My husband keeps reminding me that I would probably end up in the ER.... or wish I were dead.... BUT I do crave them. I am not going to take the plunge as my intestines sort of go into knots when the KFC commercials come on TV. BUT that doesn't stop me from thinking.... PS I am not pregnant only craving the unattainable...
  18. We cruised on Princess Lines for our honeymoon in 2003 and they were not very helpful. It was basically, watch your own diet, we have another 1,000+ to take care of!!!! I would like to think that this was just a bad experience but I would not travel on Princess Lines again unless they were more accomodating. Maybe it is the ship within the fleet that makes...
  19. Funny you should be asking about this. I bought some gluten-free monster cookies from my favorite gluten-free bakery and the oats are gluten-free. The first time I tried them I got stomach pains and bloating and a trip to the bathroom, etc.... I tried them a second time and the same thing happened. They gave me a brochure at the bakery about the gluten...
  20. My son bought me some gluten-free beer and I am wondering if anyone has experimented with gluten-free Beer Cheese Soup or Beer battered onion rings or fish. I know....these are really JUNQUE foods but the soup used to be one of my favorite things to order and I would like to try to make it. I haven't been really successful at using gluten-free flours in...
  21. The B complex vitamins or lack thereof can cause lots of neurological stuff.... BUT you might look into a condition called benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. I have this. It is caused from stuff floating in your inner ear I believe.... Anyway, it has a simple cure. It requires respositioning these floaters in your ear by assuming some strange positions...
  22. All of the above is great advice.... there are also a whole lot of mainstream foods that are gluten-free. HyVee, a midwestern grocery chain, has lots of store brand gluten-free products. WalMart also labels their store brand foods gluten-free. The only really expensive stuff is the prepacked gluten-free foods like flour, cakes, cookies.... stuff that...
  23. This is not about a doc but if you live in the twin cities, there is a great grocery store called Fresh and Natural. There is one in Shorview and one in Bloomingtom. They have tons of gluten-free foods, seminars, even cooking class. It puts both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods to shame. Also there are two great gluten-free bakeries in Mnpls and Eagan. Both...
  24. When you feel like cooking, get in the habit of making lots of extra servings. Freeze the rest in one serving plastic bags or plastic containers. That way, you will always have a stash of gluten-free frozen foods. I even do grilled foods, rice, pasta, sauces, etc. It is sometimes hard to think in larger quanities but once you get used to it, it makes...
  25. I have an awesome husband who I thought was supportive of our gluten-free zone! Unfortunately, I found him laying his bagel on my cutting board. He eats his bagel at 6 am while I am still in bed. I have also discovered him making a sandwich on the cutting board. His excuse when I found him doing it was "I was going to put it through the dishwasher later...
