  1. I not familiar enough with the fecal tests to comment other than there certainly is something going on with gluten. I know that IgA levels can vary greatly among celiacs, so it may differ between your kids...curious is the one with the much higher level the older &/or have more severe symptoms? I'd vote for getting full celiac blood on both your...
  2. Sorry your thread got hijacked - but it does point out some of the difficulties in obtaining a celiac diagnosis. Common sense tells me that eating more gluten should cause more of a reaction, but I have no references to quote on that. Have you started the challenge - any adverse reactions to gluten? Guess part of the equation will be how much gluten...
  3. Simply the UOC's Celiac Center website structure. Here is the main page for their FAQs: Open Original Shared Link If you click any of the categories on the right side of the page it directs you to addresses that contain "\archived" in the string. I receive the UOC's snailmail newsletter which - like Karen's postcard - referenced the 12 week recommendation...
  4. Yes, there are blood tests that can be run. These tests need to be run before you remove gluten from your daughter's diet. I'd have the primary order the blood tests - this way they will be ready for the GI to review rather than the GI having to order at your initial visit. Once the blood is drawn remove ALL gluten from her diet - this can be a very...
  5. Here's the link to UOC's take on it: Open Original Shared Link
  6. The human body is one very complex machine - nothing wrong with an engineer or anyone else adding their unique thought processes to the puzzle of the malfunctioning digestive system - I for one am always interested when someone finds another piece of the puzzle and look forward to finding all of the missing pieces in my particular puzzle. Thanks for sharing...
  7. It is not surprising that this issue remains unclear. As with all things Celiac - every case is different. What is clear that the longer a patient is on gluten for a gluten challenge, the more likely the antibodies will be reflected in the blood. I searched a few Celiac Centers for their recommendations on minimal time for gluten challenge: UCSD ...
  8. I have been operating off the information my celiac doctor at UCSD provided during my diagnosis. He was adamant that the testing would not be accurate if I had been gluten-free for even a couple days in the months prior to testing. I had read the two-week study performed on those with biopsy proven celiac with results based on further biopsy. I was...
  9. So sorry for all you have gone through, but you are not alone with a wide variety of symptoms that "could" be related to Celiac Disease. And yes, your symptoms could be Celiac. I'd vote for getting a full celiac blood panel before going gluten-free, because once gluten free you won't be able to have these tests done - depending on results of blood work...
  10. Have you tried Udi's or Canyon Bakehouse? If you have and didn't like them, wait some time and try again. When I first went gluten-free I wasn't that impressed with Udi's considering the price, so we made bread for a few months. I tried Udi's again at closer to a year and I loved it - guess my taste/perspective on the cost changed a bit during that...
  11. Bummer - those accidents are hard to avoid completely, but as the reactions become more severe they sure do reinforce the need to stay gluten-free. You'll still think pizza smells good - but will likely think - how can I replicate it gluten-free instead of wanting to actually eat it. Hope you feel better quick
  12. Your son's symptoms are all symptoms of Celiac Disease. 4 weeks is not a very long trial of the gluten-free diet. That his stomach pain went away while eating gluten-free is a great result and seems worth giving gluten-free a much longer trial to see what else improves. Did your doctor run a full celiac blood panel? If not, your son will need to eat...
  13. Nice - I learned something new today - love that Thanks GFinDC!
  14. I'm not familiar with lactose free dairy products - I challenged regular milk, cream, yogurt, cheese and butter - I guess I never tried lactose free dairy as it seemed they all had soy &/or a long list of ingredients - I avoid any ingredient I can't pronounce . Maybe someone else can answer this question?
  15. The best foods for recently diagnosed are meat, vegies and fruit. Some Celiacs are able to just remove gluten, while others need to limit gluten-free processed foods -- then there are some that need to remove more. The groups of foods that can cause problems are Lectins: Dairy, Eggs (yolk only - white fine), Nightshades (potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant...
  16. The blood test you mentioned looks like the tTG IgA (common first test for Celiac screening) - if it is positive you have Celiac Disease. Positive is always positive, while false negatives do happen. Hard to tell what "moderate" and "high range" are without the actual test result numbers, but I can tell you I was in the "weak" positive for Celiac on the...
  17. I'm not feeling very well this evening - but will check back to see if your questions got answered...if not I will try to answer them in the morning.
  18. There is a test - I believe you ingest certain sugars and then they test to see if it gets into your blood - I did not have that test as I had nearly flattened villi upon Celiac Disease diagnosis so I never questioned the premise that my intestines had become permeable. I don't understand your question about noises in one's stomach by breathing. Yes...
  19. I am not comfortable with saying I have definitive/exact information for you. Below is what I believe to be a good explanation of leaky gut syndrome: "The theory is that leaky gut syndrome (also called increased intestinal permeability), is the result of damage to the intestinal lining, making it less able to protect the internal environment as well as...
  20. Do you have the results from this blood test? Do you know which tests they ran? You mentioned that you have had stomach issues for at least 16 years...it can take some time to heal the damage that is caused by Celiac Disease. That you are reacting to other foods is another clue that you have serious damage - damage that could get worse if you go back...
  21. Sorry you lost your ice cream...but very glad you found the problem. Pick up some new gluten-free ice cream tomorrow and enjoy
  22. Your husband was correct that there are false negative blood tests -- so you had a stool test done that indicates gluten is most definitely an issue for your daughter. Seems like it is time to remove all gluten and look for improvement to confirm the stool test results. I guess you could choose to keep her on gluten and re-test her blood later -- this doesn...
  23. In the US Maltodextrin is generally made from potato, rice or corn - the "malt" is not barley malt. It is very rare for it to be made from wheat, but if it is it will be labeled as "wheat maltodextrin" or "maltodextrin (wheat). Although gluten-free additives can be tough on folks that are recently gluten free. Always better to stick with whole foods while...
  24. Black Russian - Kahlua and Vodka (try potato if regular bothers you) Caution this packs quite a punch as it is all alcohol - but does make a great little sipping drink. White Russian if you can tolerate dairy. Kahlua and Coffee on a cold winter day - yum. I haven't had in a long time, but look forward to a nice cocktail once my silly gut heals
