ARCHIVED Follow Up Tests
GottaSki replied to come dance with me's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My original recommendation would have been much different had I known tests were tramatic for your child. For me, your original post sounded like it was only the doctor suggesting it ridiculous and traumatic - my apologies for misunderstanding your question - I certainly would not recommend a new doctor in this case and would carefully consider the need... -
ARCHIVED Is This Celiac?
GottaSki replied to bobtom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! Sorry to hear that your son is having recurring pain. It is possible to diagnose strictly from blood work. While endoscopy is still the "gold standard" for diagnosis with many doctors it is becoming more common to diagnose from positive blood work - especially in children because the damage can be spotty within the intestine thus can be... -
ARCHIVED Celiac: The Trendy Disease For Rich White People - Science 2.0
GottaSki replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Perhaps I wasn't clear with regard to my thoughts regarding Tom's proposal that Scott not post links to certain types of information. I originally thought a link for the "Science 2.0" blog/article should not have a link posted on this site. Upon more thought - I now believe that it is good for those within the Celiac Community to be aware of false information... -
ARCHIVED Celiac: The Trendy Disease For Rich White People - Science 2.0
GottaSki replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I initially thought this guy's article wasn't worthy of a response, but then I read the first few comments where he was slamming those offering actual facts regarding Celiac. I commented a few times because the more I thought about it, the more irritated I became that someone with zero experience regarding Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance may read... -
ARCHIVED Celiac: The Trendy Disease For Rich White People - Science 2.0
GottaSki replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Brilliant You are exactly whom I thought of when I read his ridiculous rant. There are many folks like you with no doubt that gluten is the root of their health problems. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck is it faking being a duck? I think not. Speaking as a mother of one diagnosed duckling along with a couple undiagnosed ducklings... -
ARCHIVED Blood Work And Biopsy
GottaSki replied to lin7604's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome! Your son's positive blood work already indicates he has Celiac Disease. You should request a copy of the blood work as some doctors order only one celiac antibody test, when the whole celiac blood panel should be used. While the endoscopic biopsy has been the "gold standard" in diagnosing Celiac for many years, this is no longer true... -

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination?
GottaSki replied to arian's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many nuts and seeds are processed on shared equipment and can have traces of gluten, it is often declared on the package but not always. Were there any other ingredients listed? There is also a possibility you have a problem with the sunflower seed itself - I can't eat them. -
ARCHIVED Shell Fish?
GottaSki replied to bossley's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The skin rash associated with Celiac Disease is called Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH). Here is a section dedicated to DH: https://www.celiac.com/forums/forum/26-dermatitis-herpetiformis/ There are several folks that are very knowledgeable of DH on this forum so if you've had skin issues they'd be able to answer your specific questions better than... -
ARCHIVED Follow Up Tests
GottaSki replied to come dance with me's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Bartfull- It depends on the child. One of my children is horribly afraid of needles and has a very difficult time with blood tests while his brother has no problem at all. It can also depend on the age of the child along with other factors I suppose. If the OP's child has a tough time with blood tests, did not have any deficiencies and is already... -
Breakfast Smoothies - I use several pieces of any combo of fruit and a couple large handfuls of spinach in a blender - I only add water to help mix, but if you can tolerate rice or almond milks you can expand into other types of smoothies. We use many combos of blueberry, apples, pears, peaches, plums, banana, melon, mango, cherries, etc. - I can't tolerate...

ARCHIVED Shell Fish?
GottaSki replied to bossley's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you are not allergic or intolerant shellfish are great. I am fine with shrimp, but have developed a severe intolerance of crab and lobster that causes breathing problems. Crazy -- the skin on my hands had a severe itching reaction to crab and lobster my entire life, but up until very recently I could eat the meat just fine as long as my hubby took... -
ARCHIVED Follow Up Tests
GottaSki replied to come dance with me's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'd vote for full celiac panel plus Vitamins/Minerals Bs, D, K, Iron, Ferritin, Zinc and Copper because these are the annual tests we all get in my family as suggested by our Celiac Doc. As Bartfull mentioned it is important to know if the antibodies have been reduced and it is also important to see if she is currently absorbing nutrients. I'd also... -
ARCHIVED Whole Food Diet, Fresh Meats
GottaSki replied to bossley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I buy store brand fresh meats at several different stores, no problems thus far. -
ARCHIVED Dinner Party Etiquette?
GottaSki replied to AnnieInItaly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I bring my own meal - usually a beautiful salad with as many colors as possible so that when others at the table look at my plate there is no pity, only complements...if it is a a casual party I eat out of the container I bring it in...if it is more formal I ask the hostess for a plate to transfer my food so that my meal doesn't stand out as much. I felt... -

ARCHIVED Other Tests To Do
GottaSki replied to parmeisan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree that getting the endo is still a good idea. While it is possible that your time gluten free may effect the results, you will still have the data for comparison should you have another endo in the future. I've had three: my first during diagnosis, my second at a year showed almost no improvement although I'd been completely gluten-free and my last... -
Keep at it - removing ALL gluten is tough, but once you learn how it does become much easier. Think whole foods - meat, vegies, fruit and rice - avoiding processed foods is best- and if you find yourself at the fast food counter again - at least ditch the bun and get the hamburger wrapped in lettuce - Carl's Jr and In and Out are great for that. I've had...

ARCHIVED Celiac: The Trendy Disease For Rich White People - Science 2.0
GottaSki replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
The author's comments have gone from bad to worse. He and his sidekick are tag teaming with ridiculous answers that are not based in science. It seems as though they are intentionally stirring the pot with their responses. The author has been asked at least twice to provide information regarding where he is coming up with the multitudes of people that... -
ARCHIVED I Think I've Lost Potatoes...
GottaSki replied to Bubba's Mom's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Bubba's Mom - so sorry to hear you lost potato and that your hubby wasn't supportive - it is so difficult to figure out these blasted intolerances. I too have had a back and forth about potatoes. They didn't seem to bother me when I challenged them on elimination diet, but then thought there was some problems later on that my diary pointed to potato... -
ARCHIVED Help With Test Results?
GottaSki replied to coupdecoeur's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! Many doctors will only run the tTG IgA as an initial screening. Your's is negative, but that does not rule out Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance. Do you know if your doctor ran any Vitamin or Mineral blood tests? Not absorbing nutrients can indicate Celiac Disease. Since you had some improvement while trying gluten-free, it would be a... -
ARCHIVED Are These Celiac Symptoms?
GottaSki replied to djs895's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! Not everyone has improvement right away...it can depend on the damage to your digestive system. Don't give up...you really need to give it at least three months...it is likely that you will see some changes in your symptoms soon. Acne whether or not it is DH can take some time to improve from dietary changes. Are you certain you have... -
ARCHIVED Not Been Diagnosed Or Tested, But Suspecting Celiac...
GottaSki replied to Rielyn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
IF you get a doctor that suggests a gluten-free trial without testing, you say something like: "I have several classic symptoms of Celiac Disease, along with a family history. If I remove gluten from my diet, blood tests will no longer be accurate as I have to be eating gluten to produce the antibodies that are measured in the tests. Please reconsider... -
ARCHIVED Not Been Diagnosed Or Tested, But Suspecting Celiac...
GottaSki replied to Rielyn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! Just wanted to add...it is very important that you don't remove gluten from your diet until after testing is complete - eating gluten-free and even gluten light can effect the test results. If all tests are negative, it is wise to remove ALL gluten for 3-6 months to monitor symptoms. Living gluten-free is often the best test. Good... -
ARCHIVED Other Tests To Do
GottaSki replied to parmeisan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A Complete Metabolic Panel provides information regarding your kidneys, liver, blood sugars and proteins, but does not check for key vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Since you have already been tested for B12 and Iron, I'd add: B1 (thiamine) D K Ferritin Copper Zinc If you did not have a full celiac panel - some docs only run a tTG IgA (tissue...
