  1. I passed out many time pre-gluten-free, mostly after breakfast. Even now it is one of the telltale signs there was too much gluten in my food. So from my point of view, it is quite possible it was gluten. My family has a history of low blood pressure so "unexplained fainting" was always explained as low blood pressure, no need to go to the ER. (I sometimes...
  2. exactly, other crops are grown the same "traditional" way. I bet there are people who do get migraines from all the poison in food, but those won't get relief from just gluten-free diet alone. As for the migraines, I do cross-react to rice, including rice flour or vapour from boiling rice/rice pasta. On the other side I'm pretty sure barley makes me ...
  3. I became intolerant to rice, probably during the last few years before diagnosis. I've found out just two months ago. I used to be a rice lover until few year ago. Then I started disliking it the same way I always disliked wheat and rye. About the same time I also stopped liking oats. Never tried gluten-free oats, I would probably react to them as well. ...
  4. The microwaved potatoes reminded me of something - was the microwave "gluten-free"? I get bad GI symptoms from air-borne gluten way more often then from eating cross-contaminated food or even gluten directly. I have no idea why, could be allergy reaction rather than intolerance/celiac. As others mentioned, if you're in Europe, you could try avoiding deproteined...
  5. I used to have that too.
  6. some of the "little symptoms" others mention used to drive me crazy, they grew way past being just annoying. Itching everywhere was one of them - I cleaned my ears until they bled, I scratched my calves until there was no skin left (literaly, just big open wounds on both). Clumsiness slowly got me into financial crisis as numbers and value of dropped or broken...
  7. I went to my regular doc first - main complains were fatigue (sleeping over 10-12hrs a day and needing several naps during the day), hair loss, swollen fingers and feet, neuropathy. I had a history of elevated TSH (resolved on gluten-free diet) so she just tested for that and then sent me to the specialist. The specialist just gave me the pills and plans...
  8. Just another thought - Did you research anything about candida overgrowth? I knew a lady from our local support group who was on the gluten-free diet for 2 years and still had totaly flatened villi and sky-high antibodies. Then she started a strict "anti-candida" diet - no starch at all (grains, flour, legumes, potatoes, bananas...), no dairy, limited fruit...
  9. did you try not eating ANY flour and avoiding eating out for a while? Even corn, potato and rice flour can contain lots of gluten due to cross-contamination. I know it seems frustrating, but some of us need to avoid even the little amounts of gluten found in gluten-free food and the advice to eliminate even that little gluten is the best advice you can get...
  10. The dosage is 50mcg. The 2 days off sound weird, but so far it's the only time I feel at least a little better. And yes, it was the doc suggesting that. Otherwise I'm getting worse every day - terrible migraines, nausea, hot flashes, starting to lose hair again, tired and sleepy all the time (sleeping again 12hrs/day). No typical glutened symptoms like...
  11. You can't "kill" gluten, but prolamins are soluble in alcohol, no? Shouldn't it then be the best to try cleaning it with an alcohol solution? It's just my guess, I'm no chemist.
  12. I'm joining in with the "yogurt intolerance". I can drink milk, eat cheese, but I have to use sour cream instead of yogurt. Even the unhomogenized one makes me stomach sick. As for the original question, I guess the best thing is to listen to your body. If lactose bothers you, don't eat it. I didn't have any issues with dairy (except that yogurt thing...
  13. There are several different ways in which gluten can make you sick. Wheat can be hard to digest for some babies. When their stomach gets stronger, they might be able to handle wheat without any issue. Kids very often outgrow IgE wheat allergy too - up to 65% by the age of 10. There are reported cases of adults with IgE allergy to wheat/gluten going into...
  14. Thanks everyone for your support. I called my dr and she thinks I shouldn't be reacting to the levothyroxine itself yet cause it's very low dosage (I'm lightweight though). I got Euthyrox instead of Letrox, same dosage but only 5 times a week. Took one after two days break and everything seems ok so far, no allergy reaction either. The manufacturer...
  15. I don't have real masa and make "polenta tortillas" instead using precooked polenta. Tastes different but good too. Here's what I like to make: - fry them on butter and then coat in cinnamon sugar. - cut in quarters and deep-fry in sunflower oil to make fresh chips (they have great discounts on avocados now, I'm on a guacamole&chips diet until...
  16. Could it be the butter/margarine you used? I once bought some cheap butter that I never used before to make some cookies and it was a disaster - the mix melting exactly like you describe, when baked, the cookies fell apart. Not knowing it was the butter, I mixed the crumbs with more butter and cocoa powder to make balls similar to this oat recipe - they melted...
  17. Thanks for the replies. I was expecting anxiety, trembling hands, but the suicidal depression and irritability was quite unexpected. All the previous times it was gluten triggering those two. I'm taking 50mcg levothyroxine and it should be certified gluten-free. I emailed the company again to make sure it is naturally gluten-free (I'm in Europe). With...
  18. I started taking levothyroxin and after three days I'm totally freaking out - the internal shaking got very bad and my hands visibly tremble, I'm again losing balance when I look up, I got very irritable and severely depressed. Fatigue, muscle weakness and neuropathy returned too. Could all this be a reaction to levothyroxin itself or should I look for other...
  19. "Dear Pavla, Thanks a lot for your question. For each ingredient of Letrox
  20. That's a good idea. B - 1/2 can of condensed sweetened milk, 1 cup daarjeeling tea (made in sri lanka ) with full-fat milk L - glow wine (at christmas market) D - garbanzo alias chickpea soup D nr.2 - scrambled egg with 3 lettuce leaves and spicy salsa not a typical day, went to the university library (60km away from home). I'm...
  21. I use Tamari - one that doesn't have any warning about cc (took me long time to find it). There's not many meals left that I can eat with soy sauce anyway - I'm crossreacting to rice so it's hard to get noodles for my stir-fry. (there are one in vietnamese shop that say arrowroot in english, rice in czech and tapioca or something else in slovak, not brave...
  22. I voted no but with the exception of soy lecitin and soy sauce I rarely eat any. (there's one candy made with soy flour I eat). I do avoid soy oil but that's not because of the soy. All these "modern" oils like soy, corn or canola make me sick.
  23. I was wondering that too. Maybe the 'not detectable' is not the same as 'not present'. I do react to this supposedly pure sugar. It shouldn't supprise me as I do react with similar sensitivity to animals - Washing hands several times within 5-6 hours after handling animals is often not enough to protect me. I wear contact lenses and need to watch...
  24. Does anybody know if Letrox (made in Germany) is gluten and wheat-free? As I expected, doctor prescribed me meds for hypothyroidism, but I can't find if the dextrin and starch in it are ok. I sent the company a note through their website but no answer yet. The have no other contact there.
  25. I need to have a gluten-free house and I was collecting all the bills for past 4 months to get an idea how much more we spend on food because of it. It seems like we spend the same or even a little bit less than when all 4 of us ate gluten at home. It can be either a mistake or a byproduct of being more aware of what we are buying and how much it costs....
