  1. Did you try to check other common GI problems that accompany celiac? - bad gut flora, other food intolerances...? It sounds as if you were describing my (former) problems, especially the spells of fatigue. Doctors told me the same thing - that it was normal and that about half of all celiacs never get rid of their GI symptoms even on gluten-free diet. 'No...
  2. From most articles I've read I've got the impression that gluten is less toxic when in one piece, compared to peptides containing the toxic sequences, so I wouldn't count on denaturing it as a way to make it edible. It is theoretically possible that denatured gluten becomes non-toxic - if it refolds so that all toxic sequences are hidden or sufficiently...
  3. My unholly top (or bottom?) three: 1) CeliHope waffle - don't know if you can get them in America, but I really could have spared myself this taste. I had one curious bite and offered the rest to my parents, ready to trow it away if they refuse this challenge - to my amazement they liked it. 2) Glutino(?) breakfast bars - I admit I have no idea how the...
  4. Check if you are able to digest well everything you eat - for example, nuts are full of 'healthy' fats, but not everybody is able to get that fat out of them or waists too much energy in the process, the same applies to whole-grain rice, corn, some fruits, meat... Veggies are healthy, but if you eat too much of them, you might feel full before you actualy...
  5. Gaining weight was one of my symptoms. It always came in waves - I would gain up to 10 pounds a week, then loose some but not all. When I finally went gluten-free, I had about 25-30 extra pounds and probably even more if I count just fat, because I started loosing lots of muscle tissue about a year before diagnosis. Lots of the extra fat is gone now and I...
  6. To be honest that's what I fear the most when eating food I don't prepare myself. Not the cross-contamination or unintentional use of gluten-containing spices, but people with "you survived whole 27 years so it can't be that bad" or "it's all in your head" attitudes. My mom did a similar thing to me few years before I was diagnosed with gluten allergy...
  7. Biopsy is still the "gold standard" of celiac disease diagnosis, but IMHO it is an outdated requirement. The only good thing about biopsy is that if it's positive (total villous atrophy), the chance that it is anything else than celiac is close to 0%. Bad things on the other hand: 1) It takes time to develop villous atrophy, so nothing like early diagnosis...
  8. I sometimes have this reaction to garlic, certain dairy products - especially probiotics and yoghurts, and some herbal teas. I blame it on bad gut bugs fighting back.
  9. What else did you check beside food alergies and celiac? Infection, parasites, other digestive problems? Did you check for allergies in both IgE and IgG? Did the celiac test include anti-gliadin antibodies? Was she treated with antibiotics? - Antibiotics can eliminate some strains of gut bugs or trigger off problems with overgrowth of otherwise harmless...
  10. I can relate to this. Growing up, we never had any sweets at home, because none of us (parents and kids alike) was able to stop eating them. As a chocolate lover, I was never into cookies or baked stuff, but since going gluten free last year, I've been eating so much of it just out of curiosity. Lucky for me, I'm the only gluten-intolerant person in my family...
  11. Do you eat any veggies like potatoes, carrots, lettuce or herbs that are in contact with soil? Do you have a garden? You might be getting reinfected without realising it. Boiled water won't help you much, these parasites are mostly contracted from soil or feces-contaminated soil (the endolimax nana is supposed to be an indicator of consumption of feces-contaminated...
  12. I LOVE leftovers from dinner, that's for sure the best breakfast, delicious and fast. :-) If I make rice for lunch or dinner, I always leave a little for breakfast, then either add milk and fruits and boil it, or just warm it up with sweet chilli sauce and shredded cheese. If it's potatoes, I slice them and fry on butter with garlic and onions, can add...
  13. Curved nails generally mean some problem. It can be a result of anything from injury to severe malnutrition. If it's since birth, it might be a permanent "damage", but might not. I used to have very badly curved fingernails the last few years before going gluten-free. It started to improve immediately on the diet, after a few months, all my nails were straight...
  14. It took me 5 months on gluten free diet before the itching got any better, so don't give up. I used to scratch my legs and scalp until there was literally no skin left. But at least I could scratch it. The itching in my feet, palms and worst of all inside my nose/ears/mouth, where no scratching was possible/effective was driving me nuts. As someone else...
  15. If you think it's food related, then you definitely should test her again. Test not only for celiac - for some reason they often don't include anti-gliadin antibodies in the celiac panel, test for all major food alergens in all three classes - IgA, IgG, IgE. Other option is testing with elimination diet. Exclude all the suspected culprits from her diet...
  16. I can't have canola oil either. But I seem to be intolerant of plant oils in general, maybe because of high content of omega-6 fatty acids. I use olive oil and safflower oil, butter and ghee. Would like to try coconut oil, but all of them here have "may contain traces of wheat..." label on them. PS: I did a bit of searching and found an interesting...

    ARCHIVED Password

Hi everyone, I'm having trouble logging in and wonder if anybody has any suggestion or a similar problem. Every time I try to log in, I get the same "incorrect password" note. I try retyping it, I try all other passwords I could possibly use (I have a few "low security" passwords for sites like this that I use alternally), but in the end I have to...

    ARCHIVED Mexico

Hi everyone, and Happy New Year! I just moved to Mexico and I'm struggling with finding out what I can/can't eat. I have a few unanswered questions and any help with answering them is greatly appreciated. 1) Corn tortillas - what are the chances that corn flour is contaminated with gluten? So far, I'm eating tortillas from places that make only...
  19. Maybe I'm just trying to live too eco-friendly, but I'm wondering... If it's for outside activities (like picnic in a park), why don't you just bring along a spare bottle of water for washing hands? The wipes produce so much waste and are only marginally more effective than wiping hands against your trousers. (that's what I do, anyway, I never got sick even...
  20. Hi Jennifer, look up 'gluten sensitivity' article on wikipedia. It's a good reading for anyone with celiac and other gluten sensitivities. I think someone added it recently, or at least rewritten it. As for the gluten-free diet, if you think it's too restrictive when compared to your eating habits, maybe you should try get the proper diagnosis first...
  21. Lactose intolerance alone doesn't imply celiac, neither celiac implies LI. It can be a sign of damaged villi so if you think you might have coeliac disease, either ask your doctors to repeat the tests or/and do endoscopy, or try eating gluten-free diet for a few weeks. LI is pretty common in adult humans.
  22. I was through a similar period of 'mysterious glutening' and I can assure you it's not gluten in my case. I'm still not ok, six months after I was diagnosed. To a great extent I don't know what is causing my trouble, I'm just guessing, working try-and-fail style, but I'm getting better, so I must be on the right track. I had mild symptoms since early...
  23. this article might be helpful: Open Original Shared Link I have no kids so I have no definite opinion.
  24. It's just a theory. Leading and generally accepted theory based on current research. There's nothing like proving a theory right in science. You can prove it wrong or prove the opposing theory wrong to support the original theory. It like you don't get "true" and "false" theories, just "false" and "not-yet-false" ones. Maybe someone should go through...
  25. Of course it can be applied to gluten, if you are ALLERGIC to it, but trying this with a celiac disease is like trying to cure diabetes buy using gradually smaller doses of insulin. It's not gonna work. From what I've read so far, there are documented cases when diagnosed celiacs, after their symptoms disappeared on gluten-free diet, started to eat...
