  1. I understand the trepidation you are feeling because I have not disclosed my recent gluten free status with very many people either. My family in the local area consists of grandma ( my mother in law) and my husband and my daughter (also gluten free). They are all "in" on this and wonderfully so. At work I've only confided in two people. As far...
  2. hi all, I don't live in a totally gluten free household. I know there's always that potential for cross contamination, and I don't know how sensitive my daughter and I actually are, as its only been since July for her and since August for me. But what we have been doing seems to be working. Hubby is the only one who uses the toaster; my daughter and...
  3. apple-cranberry crisp! I am salivating. I think I will be starting a new holiday tradition. I have also baked the pumpkin pie filling like a custard before. I didn't bother with the water filled pan thing, but did bake in an a thick pottery dish rather than a regular pie plate. Deserts are now taken care of! thanks missy's mom. purple, if we...
  4. hi, I'm in the pits with you, as this will also be my first gluten free Thanksgiving! (though I've hosted Thanksgiving many times before). Yes, figuring it all out is a bit overwhelming... One thing my husband and I were thinking of was preparing 2 smaller birds instead of 1 big one. My mother in law likes to contribute to our holiday meals, so we...
  5. hey there! i'd be happy to answer your question, but I can't seem to message you back on here. Can you email me your email address at kmannear@yahoo.com? Thanks!

  6. I agree totally wih the non steroidal approach, accompanied with exquisite hygiene. But I found that I needed something to control the itchiness, to avoid further damage thru my scratching. And, scratching itself sometimes seemed to bring on new blisters. The preparations containing pramoxamine are non-steroidal and do effectively control itching. I was applying...
  7. if it walks like a duck and quacks.... then its probably a duck. The state of diagnostic testing is so far from perfect, whether you are talking about celiac's or non celiac gluten intolerance. My own take on the situation is, that while pursueing an "official" diagnosis may be worthwhile, the outcome of that may or may not be useful. If it is, great...

    ARCHIVED Olive Garden

my take on this is that restaurants in general are starting to smell the coffee, so to speak. There's a local pizza place - not a chain - that had a very bold advertisement for gluten free pizza. This is the second pizza joint within 4 miles of my house that now offer gluten free pizza. We haven't tried either yet - we've been making our own at home...
  9. your comments bring to mind something that's been percolating in the back of my brain. Celiac's disease represents the "tip of the iceberg" in terms of gluten intolerance. For every celiac, how many others have symptoms of non-celiac gluten intolerance and are not aware of it? Although its not a perfect science, and many celiacs go thru rounds of false...
  10. two weeks may be a little early to see dramatic improvement. The fact that you're noticing some improvement is noteworthy; keep sticking with the diet! For me the difference I noticed early on, was that a topical cream (I started out using 1% hydrocortisone) did help control the itching once I went gluten free. Prior to going gluten free creams and...
  11. thanks, he is doing better. He does have to take medication and will still get an "attack" but all in all feels better. In a way I think his experience allowed him to understand better why my daughter and I are gluten free. Although we don't have a totally gluten free household, the only meal where we "eat our separate ways" is breakfast.
  12. "I know I was deathly ill at time of diagnosis and maybe that's the key....he hasn't gotten sick enough to convince himself." I think this is the key to both of your guys.... My husband gave up beer. Not because of celiac's but because of gout. When he was first diagnosed, his doctor advised him to change his diet.... and kick the beer. He made a...
  13. I like really thinly sliced green peppers and bedalia onions. Emphasis on the thinly sliced! maybe sometimes with a little crumbled hamburg or sausage...
  14. this wouldn' t be a solution for dishes like lo mein or goulash... but for nites when its just pasta sauce and meatballs... how about separatly prepared pastas? Corn for him and rice for you?
  15. Did you try any of the rice pastas out there? Opinions will vary on this board - we're all individuals after all! But my husband and I really enjoy brown rice pasta. He's a good Italian and doesn't have to be gluten free, but he's happy to eat the Tinkyada brown rice penne. Its not a sacrfice for him - he genuinely likes it.
  16. I'll answer number two..... my experience is probably, both factors are at play. Yes, a fresh crop will occur for me if I ingest gluten. But also, I have had minor outbreaks when I have been reallly careful. These have tended to be much less severe, quicker to heal, and much less frequent the longer I stay gluten free.
  17. Your daughter sounds like my daughter at age 11. I have posted her story elsewhere on this board (see also my profile) I would pursue testing, but be aware that false negatives or inconclusive results are not infrequent, especially if symptoms are not all that obvious - on the mild side like you described. Other problems and manifestations may show...
  18. how frustrating for you! Unfortunately I think the best you can hope for is that he has a bad enough reaction to something, that he has cause to rethink what he is doing. Has he had a big bad pasta meal yet? (not that I am suggesting aiding and abetting...) When my teenager first went gluten free, she had an evening "off the wagon" with her boyfriend...
  19. here is one website Open Original Shared Link
  20. Thomas, you sound very frustrated.... as well as depresed. Your comment about a long dirt nap concerns me... Gluten intolerance spans a whole spectrum of symptomology. Celiac disease is a form of gluten intolerance, but there is as non-celiac gluten intolerance as well. Google on that term and see what you can find. The long and the short of it...
  21. I am wondering if menopause is also a trigger.... another life event representing significant hormonal shifts. Any women "of a certain age" care to comment? (Or supportive partners of the same...)
  22. Do anything you can ahead of time. If its possible, get a copy of the menu (some places will hve them online) and study it for selections which are more likely to be gluten free. Essentially, pick your entree ahead of time! Then contact the establishment to verify that your choice does not have any gluten containing ingredients. Let them know the day...
  23. tmbarke, I have loved and lost many pets from my childhood and beyond. But the pooch I have now is definitely like my third child. I have never connected with any other animal like him. And unlike my two-legged children, he never rebels, does things he shouldn't... and he won't be leaving home. We are on the verge of becoming empty nesters and I could...
  24. wow that is quite amazing, considering the number of people who have symptoms and are suffering, but have negative or inconclusive testing! I find it very interesting that Celiac antibodies were a part of your MD's new patient screening. You are lucky to have an enlightened physician! I hope you can give your bread maker and thorough cleaning and continue...
  25. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.... I've always resisted medication unless it is absolutely necessary. I would rather just focus on good nutrition... but, on the other hand. If this drug was something you didn't have to take continuously to obtain its benefits... then yes I would be most interested. Especially when going to restaurants...
