  1. I am not that much of a baker so I can't answer your question. My curiosity is getting the better of me though. If you had no symptoms how did you end up getting diagnosed?

what about keeping a food diary to see if there is something particular that makes it worse? Are you using any topicals now? other members have found Sarna lotion to be helpful; I hae found that Gold Bond Medicated creams helps me. (same active ingredient as Sarna lotion)>
  3. I thought I would start this topic because when people surf to a forum like this they are not only looking for answers and explanations, but also rays of hope, that it is possible to feel better. And its the experience and support found on this forum that is valued by so many! This is for the newcomers to this forum, but also for those who may be in...
  4. although going gluten free did not eliminate my daughter's anxiety, it did help wih her depression and moodiness. In the first month of the diet he got glutened 2 times - and the change in her mood was noticeable each time. There is a definite relationship between gluten intolerance and depression. But I agree with Crimson, don't go it alone! I am glad...
  5. my humble two cents worth. Symptoms of gluten intolerance/celiac disease are highly variable, both in form and severity. and I suspect they can vary with the changing hormonal status of a woman's body. So you may have been able to "get away with" ingesting gluten while pregnant... but your hormonal status has changed and now you have problems... I...
  6. a gluten free budget can be painful.... you might want to see if there is a food coop in your area. I was fortunate to have a coworker with celiacs who belongs to one, so I was able to take advantage of this. I am able to purchase gluten free things like pasta and baking mixes at a lower cost compared to local health food stores or even Whole foods....
  7. The first "prepared" gluten free food I bought was a breakfast cereal, mostly for my daughter, who was used to eating special Kay. It was made from brown rice, and it was OK, and she ate it enthuiastically at first. But we never ended up finishing the box. She ended up converting her breakfasts to puffed rice cakes and some fruit - usually a banana. I...
  8. start simply! Fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, chicken, pork, fish, beef all are inherently gluten free. So for dinner, a serving of meat or fish, vegetables of your choice, and some rice. Very satisfying and easy too. I usually take the lefovers to work for lunch. Breakfast could be eggs and fruit. It does take a while to understand the ingredients...
  9. (imagine Twilight Zone music now) I have been gluten free since August 10th (with 2 off the wagon events) and have experienced relief for my rash. I see a direct causal relationship between the two, because when I ate bad stuff, the rash got worse. And improves when I'm gluten free. I have been happy about the improvement with the rash, but in the...
  10. Well talk to your doctor first. Let him know about your diagnosis; it will add to the level of suspicion for your son. I understand your feelings about the endo too. My daughter was 11 when we went through all that. When she had her problems this past year, going gluten free definitely resolved the insomnia and the contipation. The depression...
  11. well, yes. "where there's smoke there's fire." Constipation, soft stools (esp if frequent) alone could be indicators. Autism, the dark circles, a rash... other possible signs. You might try keeping a food diary, recording everything your son eats, as well as the symptoms experienced. Keep accurate observations, and look for trends. Are problems worse...
  12. Did he have a total IgA run as well? If the Total IgA is below normal, then these IgA results may be falsely negative. I have read that the anti Gliadin IgG is considered a senisitive but not very specific indicator (ie, it can be positive in the absence of celiac disease.) My daughter had bloodwork, upper GI, lower GI, and her only positive finding was...
  13. you might want to look around for a food coop in your area, that can help, at least with some staple items. I buy brown rice and brown rice pasta from a coop. I get the best prices if I can buy it in bulk - 10 pounds. That's a lot and it will last us a long time. So I store both in smaller quantities in tightly sealed ziplock bags.
  14. ok, tell more of the story!
  15. Tinkyada didn't have wagon wheels, but they did have some spirals that looked fun. Heres a link to the shapes they offer: Open Original Shared Link
  16. Ditto on that one! From time to time I've had drowsiness after lunch too - really hard not to fall asleep during afternoon meetings! Although it still happens - like today - I have to say that its less frequent since going gluten free. Addressing the caloric intake issue.... a pattern of eating that I've fallen into, w/o really planning on it, is...
  17. Have you tried brown rice pasta yet? Its something you can cook for the whole family. Tinkyada brand is delicious!
  18. More and more regular grocery stores are carrying gluten free foods now. If you're lucky you might find some brown rice pasta... I would buy 2 or 3 pounds. When you're at your family's place you could cook some up and use that to supplement your meals. Or, you could even offer to cook a pasta meal with it! My husband, a good Italian, likes this pasta...
  19. I'm not sure I understand why you are having to ontinue to eat gluten and get the endoscopy and biopsy? I thought if you had onfirmed DH that pretty much sealed a diagnosis of Celiac's.....
  20. A family member gave me a very nice Christmas gift last year - a subscription to La Cucina Italiana. Its a gorgeus magazine - part travelogue, part gourmet cooking. I've made a few things from this (so many recipes, so little time) and they are scrumptious. (Thank goodness for brown rice pasta!) Anyhoo, this months recipe of choice is this luscious...
  21. I figure my itch rash was like a 50th birthday present! Celiac's or anything related to it was the furthest thing from my mind last fall, when I got this very itchy rash that didn't go away..... it wasn't till my daughter started having problems that could have a connection to gluten intolerance that it ever dawned on me that I could be affected too.....

Thanks for the suggestions! Oarweed sounds partiicularly nice. In addition to calling ahead, because I was with a large group, I tried to focus on menu selections that would be inherently gluten free (cc issues notwithstanding) so that my entree would not have to be prepared differently than usual.. I think that unless I know a restaurant specifically...
  23. Missybean, I started getting this rash on my feet last October, a full year ago. I have had athlete's foot before, which subsides with the spray or cream, but this time that didn't do it. I figured I had superinfected the spots with staph by scratching, so I applied triple antibiotic ointment. That soothed the scratched spots, but I kept getting new spots...
  24. I would like this! thanks
