    ARCHIVED Can Dh Be Mild?

Oh, thank you for that information - that makes me wonder even more. We are really gluten free at our house, so the only thing that usually gets me is really low level CC sometimes with a new food, often a gluten free one that has so little gluten it doesn't even bother the other two gluten free kids in the house. Wonder if that low level of gluten might...

    ARCHIVED Can Dh Be Mild?

Well holy crud! I just started getting what you just described, a few days ago! Tried a new oil, felt sick, and just found out it is run on a line with wheat germ oil, too. I was thinking I was getting weird acne or something, but it is EXACTLY like what you just described. Oddly enough, it's rather comforting to know that whatever it is, someone else...
  3. Not sure what she's looking for in the ct scan, but I can at least say that I was given one myself, after my celiac diagnosis. If I remember correctly, mine was to examine certain organs for damage that can be caused by malnutrition or vitamin deficiencies that result from Celiac disease.
  4. To answer the question if any of this suggests celiac disease vs. gluten intolerance? I don't believe so, necessarily. However, to be blunt? So what? You are having reactions when you eat these foods, yes? That means they are doing something TO you, and you don't know what. And you likely can't find out what, either. Doctors are still trying to figure...
  5. Last year, I had read that the USA had not decided on exactly what 'Gluten Free' was going to mean on our labels, yet. They were trying to determine what ppm gluten free would be, and what all the standards would be that a company would have to meet, etc... But then a couple months back, I came across a couple websites for Gluten Free Beer that said...
  6. I must admit, I had known too many people who have reacted to vinegar to feel safe with it. NOT because of the processing, however - I am aware that it has been determined that the processing involved in making vinegar eliminates the gluten. As I understand it, that was the original worry, wasn't it? That the processing might not remove all gluten? But...
  7. Oh thank you - I'll go check that out!
  8. Oh that's good to know. How sensitive to gluten are you, if you don't mind my asking? I have some in my family that seem to be pretty moderate in their sensitivity, but I tend to react to much lower levels of gluten. Dumb ole body, blech. I found out, to my disgust, that the 'processed in the same facility/equipment' kind of statements aren't legally...

    ARCHIVED Grief

So sorry it's been so frustrating and frightening lately. My own anniversary just passed, too - August 10th - and I can so sympathize. The fear of being able to eat safely can be SO difficult. I've never been a big foodie, either, and now I feel like I think about food all the time, or at least I'm forced to. And oh man, travelling, yeah - it takes so...
  10. Thank you for posting this! I was just having trouble and figured out that the spectrum oils were bothering me! Trying to find truly gluten free oils has been such a bear!
  11. How are you doing now? Do the symptoms seem to be improving, or are you still having trouble?
  12. I've been using Spectrum Brand oils up 'til now for my gluten free kids, thinking they were safe. Just looked at their website, where they say there is a possibility of contamination because they process wheat germ oil on the same machinery, and now I'm wondering if this has been the cause for my daughter having trouble lately. I'm trying to find a good...
  13. We've been to Disneyland just once with all our food issues. We had some good experiences, a few bad ones. For restaurants, a lot of them in the park, even a few of the cheaper ones, you can call and make a reservation ahead of time and talk to the chef about your issues. They had notes on me at three different places, LOL, and discussed my dietary needs...
  14. I'm afraid that most of what I've heard about a hospital's ability to adhere to a gluten-free diet has been negative as well. It seems like it very much depends on the hospital. I have been to a couple that were very aware and careful with my health. But I've also been to a couple where I was given beverages and medication that, when asked if it was gluten...
  15. So, so sorry to hear that things are not resolving easily for you, hon! It sounds like your issues are very complicated, and obviously I'm not a doctor, but in the spirit of offering up anything at all that might offer possible help, I'll say a couple things. 1. First, your neurologist is incorrect in his statement that going gluten free won't help...
  16. Many of your symptoms are ones that I had before I was diagnosed as Celiac, so it's definitely a possibility. If they have tested you for celiac and it's negative, you could always ditch the gluten and see how you feel. There could be other issues, too, though. 1. Food allergies or sensitivities. The blotchy skin with exhaustion to match sounds a bit...
  17. Corn products are often processed on the same lines as wheat products. If you give the company a call, they should be able to tell you if the corn you had issues with was run on the same line, or near another line, that processes wheat. Although I'm in the boat of those who react to corn as well as gluten, so yeah, it can happen. sigh.

    ARCHIVED Spot The Gluten

Short answer? Pretty much every ingredient on your list might be an issue for gluten. If the food is processed in any factory that processes gluten at all, there's a chance for gluten contamination. If it's processed from a gluten ingredient (like, possibly, the alcohol used in vanilla essence), there's an even greater chance for contamination some time...
  19. I haven't found one I liked yet - I ended up using Microsoft Excel and making my own real quick. But just as a suggestion that my dietician gave me that I wouldn't have thought of on my own, keeping track of the brands you're using is REALLY useful. I've found a few brands that I couldn't use, and much later we figured out a contaminant, or a processing...
  20. I think you should go for it! I have found more help and useful products/books from people in the community - the longer I've had Celiac Disease, the more I feel like we have to help each other if we want to get through this. The medical community has some wonderful people who are informed about celiac disease, but they seem to be in the minority. All...
  21. Just in case - have you, your husband, or your other children been tested for Celiac Disease? If you haven't, that might be something to consider before getting rid of all the gluten. We ended up testing everyone after I came back positive for Celiac Disease. My daughter tested as positive for celiac disease, even though she didn't have any of the symptoms...
  22. I sent you an email - I'm in your neck of the woods! You can totally do this. We've got a good celiac community here, if you haven't checked it out yet. I've gotten some great information from our local group. It's a bit crazy at first, going gluten free and keeping an eye out for contamination and such, but it gets easier. Still a little crazy, but easier...
  23. Yeah, it's the wheat rather than the soy that's the issue. :-) But, interestingly enough, you're getting the more traditional soy sauce when you go gluten free - it's called tamari - because when it was first invented, it was only made with soy beans. Using wheat, which makes the flavor a bit more mellow, is a more modern process. However, if you traditionally...
  24. The slapped cheek look and eczema makes me wonder if she has an allergy as opposed to celiac, or even on top of it. Have they tested her for any? My friend's little one was getting that slapped cheek/eczema issue after eating squash. Then started getting it when they used cucumber wipes, then watermelon. Have figured out the little one reacts to everything...
  25. re: the alochol - you might want to consider holding off on the alochol for a little bit. My own GI had mentioned that alochol would slow my healing. If you are still getting glutened a lot, it might be helpful to keep alcohol out of your diet until you're feeling better. Oh! For safe foods at the Olive Garden, anyway, their gluten free pasta might be...
