  1. Sadly, yup, it's for real. Think of it this way. You can get a cold or the flu from just one germ. If someone touches raw meat and touches the counter, and then YOU touch it and touch your mouth, you can get food poisoning. And most of us have heard of people who are so sensitive to peanuts that they can simply breathe in a few molecules of peanut in...
  2. Do you by any chance know of any good studies on some of the neurological problems that gluten has caused? I have a friend whose husband has quite a few neurological issues, many tests with no solution, and quite a few of them seem suggestive of possible celiac, but their doctors refuse to test. They were trying to find some studies to pass on to their doctors...
  3. On their website, it says this: Is RICE DREAM Beverage a gluten free product? Yes. Although RICE DREAM Beverage is processed using a barley enzyme, the barley enzyme is discarded after use. The final beverage might contain a minute residual amount (less than .002%) of barley protein. I know that I stay away from the rice milk, big time.
  4. This site might be of some use in finding foods to eat that work for you: Open Original Shared Link It's a gluten free blog by another college student who has to live on a budget. He has recipes and food ideas that would hopefully be something you could afford/have time to make. There's another site that might be of some use, too: Open Original...
  5. I don't tend to. I've learned the hard way that a visual inspection just can't tell where the gluten is. Chopped fruit and corn chips aren't even safe, really. My in-laws, for ex, cut a loaf of bread and then cut up apples with the same knife and cutting board and contaminated it. The chips can be run on machines that run chips with gluten in the spices...
  6. I'd second the possible other food issues. The gluten withdrawal seems to really knock some people down, and then some people get hit with food allergies whose symptoms were masked by the issues with the gluten. Here's a question I'd ask: when you start eating gluten again, is there anything you DON'T eat that you DO eat on your gluten free diet? If there...
  7. Wow, yeah - misinformed doctor, ahoy. I'd head right to that celiac center. As you've said, you've seen a lot of information that contradicts her opinions, and considering that much of that information is coming from other doctors AND other celiacs, seriously, I'd ditch the woman. To contrast? My doctor hears about ANY list of constant, varied physical...

    ARCHIVED Help Needed!

A thought on the vitamin D just occurred to me, figured I'd add to my last reply! For the vitamin D, sometimes you can be getting plenty of sun, and your body will still not synthesize it properly, so if you at all suspect a lack of this, might be worth getting tested, still. That's my issue, currently. I live in an area with tons of sun, I go out every...
  9. SIBO I've been tested for and came back negative, thankfully. For the fructose malabsorption, I haven't been tested, but my GI said he'd be happy to do it. However, he's noticed that the test does better if his patients go on the diet first, then get tested second. He said he's seen a lot of false negatives, and positives, if he tests when people are...
  10. If it's on the skin, I think one question would be whether it can get into his mouth, too. Does he put his fingers into the bath and into his mouth? Or does shampoo rinsed off of him get into his mouth ever? lotion on fingers get into his mouth? Also, do you ever give him a little kiss with lipstick or chapstick on? That'll have gluten, too, usually. However...
  11. Thank you so much for your reply. I really needed the good thoughts today! And it is wonderful to hear that you have not reacted in a few months, too! I usually get through my day with the belief that this is getting better, and sometimes reminding myself of how much I have. I can walk and dance when I wish, I can write, I have my vision and my hearing. I...
  12. This is, honestly, just going to be a big ole vent. I don't want to whine to my family - they have enough worries right now to deal with. I suppose I just need to let it all out to people who have been there! I'm feeling so DOWN today. August 10 will be my 1 year anniversary of being diagnosed as Celiac positive, and I'm feeling very depressed about...
  13. There's a gluten free blogger - who I'm afraid I have forgotten the name of - who wrote a lot about eating out. It was something she loved and didn't want to give up. She said for her, she cultivated certain restaurants, so that they learned what she needed, and knew about celiac disease, and she could be safe there. She also said that sometimes it took a...
  14. We will all be definitely telling you that you haven't lost your mind! 1) You could be getting more sensitive to gluten. A lot of celiacs seem to get more sensitive to gluten once they go off of it, so small sources of gluten that wouldn't bother you at first may begin to give you a reaction the longer you go 'gluten free.' Also, are you checking for...
  15. Oh thank you so much for the detailed information! I have been wondering about Arrowhead Mills flours' safety with my kids a couple times. I will definitely be checking out these farms. Very much appreciated. Do you grind all your own flours? If you do, would you have any advice on what types of mills/coffee grinders work for what grains? I could use...
  16. What brands for whole grains have you found that have been good for you, in the gluten free sense? Have you had any trouble with the whole grains?
  17. Oh, do you have a good company that you get whole grains from? I can't use flour mixtures usually because I have problems with some non-gluten grains as well, but if you have some whole grains that were very safe for you, I would love to hear. Thank you for the info!
  18. I know some really sensitive celiacs here have mentioned finding wheat in some of their gluten-free grains. Now a study released in June is bearing out their worries, big time: Open Original Shared Link The pertinent information, I thought, was this, said re: gluten testing of a number of flours and grains: "...The worst offenders included soy...
  19. Yeah, I'd do a food log, too. Write down what you eat, at what time, and EVERY ingredient. Brand names of the foods can help, too, as some brands may have different processes, suppliers, etc... that affect your reactions. Then note every reaction and what time for that, too. After a couple weeks, or less, you may start to see a pattern. Maybe think about...
  20. Welcome to the club. So far, the best information I've found is on forums like this one and others. Many medical sites are pretty sparse in details, and the disease is, really, still being studied and learned about. I see many times where celiacs are noticing a trend and dealing with it before doctors are. The community has been really helpful and...
  21. I totally agree! That's how I started figuring some of my stuff out. I was so sick I thought I must have a stomach flu or food poisoning, stopped eating solids for about a day and felt better, then felt terrible again as soon as I ate. Finally helped me realize that the food was making me sick!
  22. These have been WONDERFUL doctors in and around Tucson, Arizona Dr. Wataru Tamura - A GI doctor in Oro Valley, Arizona. He is REALLY knowledgable about Celiac Disease, keeps very up to date on the latest research, etc... He will want to test you out the wazoo, which can be a bit 'urg' to argue with if you simply don't have the money, but he is still very...
  23. Oh that is wonderful!!! So happy to hear that. Every time I hear someone has figured out all this #$!#$! junk going on in their body, I just wanna cheer! Yeaaa!
  24. Whoops, just realized I misspoke on something I said! And I have no idea how to edit, so I'll just put it here! I meant to say that you want one, two, or three ingredients PER FOOD, max. I just realized like it seemed as though I was suggesting to have 1,2, or 3 ingredients a day. Someday, I'll speak properly, LOL.
