  1. Just giving you a sympathetic virtual hug! I was really shocked when I had my first gluten reaction after a few months of totally gluten free. Mine lasted for quite some time too, with vertigo so bad the first while that I couldn't even walk. :-( My father can get accidentally glutened and he gets a mild crampy stomach and the runs for a couple days...
  2. I'm right there with you! Holy crud, seriously, lots of similarities. Corn, millet, sorghum, rice, teff, oats, and the big 3 gluten grains all do bad things to me at the moment. Maybe not forever, but right now, they kick my butt. No dairy or soy for me either. I have only successfully eaten bison meat for months now. But no eggs over here, sigh. ...
  3. I'd second the calling up your General doctor and asking for the celiac blood test panel (as opposed to just a blood test: the panel part is important). If it's positive, then you can go to the specialist, you know? Some doctors will write you up the prescription for the blood test, some won't, but it can't hurt to ask for it. And you can insist as much...
  4. I've had the left ear pain, too!! Lots of weird tingly stuff that went down my arms rather than my legs. It was attributed to a partially herniated disc in my neck. However, off of gluten, it went away. I've only had one gluten reaction that I KNOW has been gluten since I went gluten free. When it happened, I suddenly had the ear pain, vertigo and...
  5. We've eaten Amy's products and been okay, but just last night we had their mac and cheese and their rice noodle asian dish. My daughter got really sick on them. It made me think of a few times we've had many foods, Amy's included, and my daughter was sick but we weren't sure what got her. I'm wondering now if it was Amy's then, too However, on their...
  6. It's pretty crazy to realize how much has gluten in the beginning, yeah? and then everything that's gluten free seems to have more sugar, sigh. The hard part of the lists is that they change so fast. However, I just got a book that I've been enjoying a lot: The Gluten free grocery shopping guide. It's updated every year and lists brands and what of...
  7. I'd say it's really unlikely you'll be able to wash the nuts off very well. Although you could try with soap and water, and wash every nut, maybe? We had some contaminated pistachios (didn't know it at the time. They were just plain pistachios). For the recipe we made, they had to be washed, then soaked for 8 hours in water, and washed a couple more...
  8. Yeah, sadly, they don't make a list themselves, we've gotta make our own, sigh. Gluten free stuff: Tasty Bite meals - boxed quick-to-make Indian food. Comes in packs of 3 or 4 as I recall. Frito lay lists which of its chips are gluten-free on its site, although it's not perfect when it comes to Cross contamination: Open Original Shared Link
  9. Is he still eating dairy? Some of us are dairy intolerant for the first while, until we heal up. Might be causing the issue? I'm sure there are many more possibilities that others here can suggest. My daughter was 11 when she was diagnosed, but we skipped the burping. Does it hurt him at all? Acidic or anything like that? Have they tested him for...
  10. Happy you can be healthy, and I'm sure you'll get many virtual hugs and sympathy from the group here. The grieving over what's lost can be really hard. Sometimes you'll think you'll be over it and something will happen and it'll hit you all over again. Totally normal, really. Sucks, but still normal. Two things that might be of use, since you're...
  11. Oh goodness, I feel for you! I had horrific anal fissure during and after both pregnancies, ugh. Very painful, and they kept opening after every BM, or every time things went crazy like you've mentioned, if BM consistency changed. This is what helped me - I did a lot of research, tried lots of stuff that didn't work, but it was years ago and I don't...
  12. So sorry you have to put up with crap like that. :-( I'd ask this: have they tested you for H. pylori, food allergies, food sensitivities? Are you still on dairy? Any of these can slow down healing, too. Have you been tested for Crohn's? Or to see if your intestines are healing or if they are still not healing yet? If not, or if they haven't been...
  13. Thanks, I've been wondering about this!
  14. Sadly, Purell is not good at getting rid of gluten. It's good at sterilizing, but that's killing living cells rather than denaturing a protein. you've gotta wash those molecules down the drain. The last info. I heard on destroying gluten molecules (it was quoted from some one here at celiac.com, if I remember right, so I'm afraid I don't have a link confirming...
  15. I'd say first, I'd keep some of his favorite gluten treats out of the house because they are obviously tempting him a bit too much. Also, it's probably not a bad idea for your other two to eat more gluten free stuff, considering the high likelihood that, if they carry your celiac gene, the disease will trigger in them later in life eventually. Getting them...
  16. Yup, it definitely is. Celiac Disease can trigger at any time during your life, if you have the genes for it. So it could trigger the day after a negative test and you'd have a positive biopsy a few WEEKS later, sometimes. However, it's also possible that you have a false negative the first time round, too. False biopsies are not unheard of, especially...
  17. I think one thing that may be confusing is the idea that celiac symptoms have to be gut problems. That was the original belief, but they now know that many celiacs have silent celiac disease - the disease with no gut symptoms, or few of them. Myself, I likely had celiac disease for 22 years - never had gut symptoms ever. What i did have was a myriad...
  18. So sorry that your daughter's doctor was not up to date on the disease. I would say you definitely want to get them all tested, if they'd agree to it. My father tested positive 8 years ago. We got no one tested - didn't even realize it was an issue. I asked for the testing myself during another procedure, like yourself, when I had no traditionally...
  19. I had both the capsule endoscopy and the genetic test, both. It was very useful, I think. I had a positive gene test. And my doc found inflammation in mid-gut that hadn't been detected on either colonoscopy or endoscopy. He noted all areas of inflammation, and that's been very useful in figuring out where I'm having trouble absorbing what nutrients (different...
  20. Here's hoping that your health improves tremendously once you go gluten free after the biopsy. I'd second going to foods that are whole and unprocessed - it tends to make things easier, at first. Fruits and veggies, unbreaded meats, nuts and legumes, etc... I'd avoid luncheon meat, sausages, and hot dogs at first - can have gluten. And check teas...
  21. Ooh, I didn't even think to look for an app version! I don't think my brain is ready for the twenty-first century yet, LOL.
  22. I'd second the question on a second biopsy. It sounds very much like you are not absorbing well at all. If it's not something else, it's possible you're still getting enough gluten to affect YOU, even if you are being on a technically strict gluten free diet. I absolutely believe that you've been very stringent; I was the same way. So sick that...
  23. Wishing you good luck. Very much know where you're coming from. It's sometimes so hard to trust yourself and what you are feeling when all the experts won't listen or the tests don't seem to bear out what you're experiencing. The more I find out out and experience, however, the more I'm learning that we have to trust ourselves and what we're feeling and...
  24. Freaking Amen to that!!
  25. Oh, thank you, David! This is one that's been bugging me for a long time now. Nice to find someone who knows a bit about it. Of course, now the big mystery is figuring out why the myth started in the first place, LOL. And thanks for the bit of information on the tea bag origins, too - I love learning little things like that. Makes life a...
