  1. Restaurants, I'm afraid I'm not gonna be much help, eek! Grocery stores with gluten-free stuff, that I can do - whole foods, sunflower market, trader joe's, and Natural Grocer's (vitamin cottage is the old name, and can be googled by that). Natural grocer's is the cheapest, often. Also, this is a site to check out: Open Original Shared Link Has a few...
  2. Some quick ideas: - genetically modified foods seem to cause an increase in allergies to OTHER foods in animal studies. My GI is starting to see this in his auto-immune patients, too, so he recommends eating everything organic. - if you try the elimination diet, I would dump the 8 most common allergens, everything in the grass family, and then do a bit...
  3. Just saw you were searching for answers and figured I'd ask: have you looked at (dietary) fructose malabsorption? The rice thing made me think of it, as brown rice is bad for people with this issue, and white rice seems to be okay. Involves fruits and veggies and grains, so it can cover a lot of foods! This site talks about some of the foods that are...
  4. Corn will do it for me. Not an allergy, it just messes me up, big time. I actually just had my entire neck and shoulders kink up to the point I couldn't turn my head or straighten up completely because I got medication with corn in it. Perhaps for you as well?

    ARCHIVED Help Needed!

Have you taken a look at some of the allergy sites for the foods your intolerant to, especially the corn? There may be some of these you are getting while unaware of it, which could make it difficult for you to get better, yes? The corn, especially, is very difficult to avoid. It is in all iodized salts to stabilize the iodine, for example, so you'd be...
  6. Ha, oh man, your mom is a wise, wise lady. :-D
  7. Some possibilities of things I've heard of that seem like one is reacting to everything. 1. Parasites or bacterial infection - I know giardia is known for having false negative tests very commonly. 2. You could still be getting corn? I didn't know how much research you've done, but I know that it was the one thing I continued to get for the longest...
  8. It could also be that you are on the more sensitive side of things, so that gluten-free products may still have too much gluten. They typically have less than 10-20 ppm of gluten, but some of us will still react to that. My GI has also told me he's seen patients who still test positive for celiac, even when they are completely gluten free, if they have...
  9. Oh dear lord, so sorry this is happening to you! And I am SO there with ya. Mine happened all at once. I went gluten free, and then started reacting to freaking everything. I'm eating about 9 foods now for the past few months, because everything else makes me sick (some to the point of my throat swelling up), and I'm slowly trying to find foods...
  10. Depending on the situation, I tend to say something different. If it's a one time thing where I'll never see the person again, I'll just say allergy, but one where I get very ill at the slightest bit of gluten. Restaurants, etc.... tend to understand that sort of 'danger' as something familiar. Easy to share and drop the subject. With friends and...
  11. I'm pretty sure that would be a good idea, yeah. I'll be honest, I say this more based on a recent article about sponges and bacteria, where it was saying that with sponges, it tends to just wipe the bacteria around when you reuse it, rather than actually cleaning it off entirely. I would imagine gluten would be similar.
  12. Ugh, just got glutened, and it's been frustrating as heck! My mother has been visiting for the week to help watch my children as I've been recovering from surgery. She's been SO helpful, and trying to be really aware about the gluten, because both myself and my kids have this. She brought gluten into the house, but kept it in one little space, away from...
  13. One other quick question - have they done any internal scans? I only ask because I had a friend with unexplained weight gain and that heavy feeling in her gut, and it ended up as an ovarian cyst that weighed nearly 10 pounds! eek!
  14. THAT is VERY interesting. I was just chatting with an acquaintance whose husband has been having a number of neurological problems that no one can figure out, that look very similar what is described here! I'm printing this out right now to pass on to her! Thank you!
  15. Yeah, I'd say you were missing something, because I don't believe I've ever heard of the diet not working suddenly. Two things that might apply? 1. Many people who go off of gluten get more sensitized to it, so foods with no gluten but with gluten contamination might not bother you at first, but could start to bother you the longer you stay away from gluten...
  16. One quick thought - if they haven't done a stool test for parasites yet, I'd ask for one. And get someone to smack 'em in the head for not doing such a thing. But goodness, I'm so sorry you are having so many problems! I have not had quite the same journey, but I'm definitely in the boat of 'gluten free and feel AWFUL,' but I was lucky and found an...
  17. Based on what I've just been through, I'm going to say two things that are a little fuzzier, not so much places to find gluten, but concerns for celiacs, rather. I think I'd say these are the top two things I'd look out for: 1. Ignorant medical personell. In other words: hunt down some good docs, dentists, pharmacists, etc... --If you have any procedures...
  18. I haven't found any gluten-free cookbooks that the kids are really all that thrilled with yet, I'll be honest, but there was a threat on lunches for kids here at celiac.com ( ) that seemed to have some nice ideas for kid foods. They also had a link or two to food sites that had good ideas, so that might be of some use as well.
  19. I've seen a website that might be of some use! Open Original Shared Link You make a free account, and then can put in every allergy your son has, and it will let you search for recipes that exclude all the allergens. It's not a big site - I think it's only been around a year or two - so there are not hordes of recipes, I'll be honest. But the people there...
  20. Congratulations, and wishing you good luck for the future discoveries, too! We did the same thing. My daughter tested positive for celiacs, but my son did not. He, too, had huge behavioral issues, and I was concerned there were some learning issues as well. So we took both of them off gluten, and there wasn't a lot of change. I took them off...
  21. Nope, they really didn't! I get all choked up, every time I remember my son's face, I swear. Glad it brightened you day a little too!
  22. Just from the perspective of other things it could be...have you looked at impetigo? That's something my son just kept getting over and over, sounds very similar to the rash that you mentioned, near the mouth and chin. Washing can make it go away, after many, many days, but sometimes it needed antibiotic creme or it just lingered and lingered. I'd have to...
  23. You could always save up and pay for a prometheus test for the celiac gene later, too. He doesn't need to go on a gluten challenge for it to work, and with a positive gene plus his response to a gluten free diet, I'm sure you would be able to find a doctor somewhere - might be a different one than now - who would give him a positive diagnosis from that.
  24. Phew, okay...few ideas. 1. Could be giardia or an H. Pylori infection. Has she been tested for that? 2. Could be other foods, dairy especially, considering the Norwalk issue. Any damage to the intestine, even from a tummy flu, can make a person lactose intolerant for a while, and if they have dairy during this period, it can make it difficult to heal...
  25. I hope the recovery goes smoothly for you! Oh, and if you haven't considered it yet, you might want to look into getting your sons tested, too. My kids had no symptoms, but we tested them after hearing that out of siblings, parents, and children of celiacs, 1 in 22 will test positive. Once the tests were complete, both my kids have ended up on gluten free...
