  1. Sorry to hear that you've been hitting a low area! My experience is admittedly limited, but most people that I hear of who have a bad patch, go up and then down again, have something else going on. These are most of the reasons I've heard. 1. An unexpected source of gluten has entered their life. Someone else's lipstick, a new dishwasher soap that...
  2. It's really overwhelming at first, but it really does get better. My 11 year old was diagnosed about 8 months ago, and my 8 year old had symptoms even thought he tested negative, so they are both gluten free right now. So we're still in that 'trying to be safe' stage, ourselves. So...some of the stuff we've found that might help! 1. Very good site: Open...
  3. As odd as this sounds, you may luck out and start noticing a reaction after you've been off gluten for a while. My family were all silent celiacs (4 of us tested positive), and while only one of us had any gut symptoms before when we ate gluten, after going gluten free, we all get gut symptoms now if we get glutened. I've read of many others who have that...

    ARCHIVED Walgreens Fail

Thank you everyone for your replies! I'm pretty sad to hear that lots of people have gone through this, too, but at the same time, it's kind of nice to feel less alone. I suppose maybe I should be grateful that this happened to me first. I'm kind of new to this, but both my kids need gluten-free medications too, and better I had to go through this than my...
  5. There was a link to a study in one of the more recent Celiac.com newsletter that looked at intestinal damage and outward reactions, actually! I've been trying to find the link, but so far, no luck. You'd probably be able to find it if you go over the last few newsletters, maybe? From what I recall, the study had celiacs volunteer to eat varying amounts...
  6. I've been running into so many frustrations with trying to get gluten free stuff lately, and seeing so many upsetting stories about thoughtless in-laws and teachers and how they deal with children with celiac disease. This is to celebrate all the people who care and understand about children and their needs. All the ones who went to extra lengths to help...
  7. Oh how interesting! I have been wondering about why that is, too, for a while now! Good info. to know.
  8. I am so upset right now I just want to cry. I had surgery earlier this week, and last night I ended up at the ER with increasing pain and all sorts of fun stuff. Was sent away from the ER with muscle relaxants - my neck and shoulders were so kinked up I am literally walking with my head to the side and hunched over - and pain medication for excruciating...
  9. Oh congratulations! I just hit my 10 month mark 7 days ago, too! :-D Seriously, way to persevere and do all this for yourself, and to have it working so well is wonderful. I definitely had that crazy hunger issue going on in the beginning, for months. I'm down about 60 pounds from where I started when I was diagnosed. It's a great weight loss program,...
  10. Sorry to hear about your allergies, but hopefully this will start to help you feel better! My GI has prety much noted exactly what you said, in his practice. His celiac and other auto-immune patients seem to be susceptible to food allergies more than his other patients. I asked why and I don't remember his answer, darn it. I was told I might be able...
  11. I'd agree - every experience is different. Just can't know how it's going to go or how long it will take. My own dietician disagrees with Maureen's on the amount of gluten that can harm a celiac person, however. Makes me curious why, although looking at the official recommendations, I wondered about this. Officially, studies have found that celiacs had...
  12. My Own personal opinion is 'no, it's not all in your head.' I admit, that's just my opinion. Obviously I don't know you or your case, and I'm not a medical professional. But the fact that you have noticed your reactions with great details does not automatically mean you are a hypochondriac, or that you are stressed out, it means you are paying attention...
  13. Congratulations on your diagnosis! It feels kind of strange, doesn't it, to be HAPPY to be diagnosed with something? But I swear, with celiacs, it's such a relief to have an answer, I think. I'm a homeschooling mom of two who was diagnosed just last year. My daughter came back positive, my son negative, but we've noticed a huge difference with both...
  14. For me, I only had one migraine in my life before going gluten free, and after I was gluten free for a while, suddenly I get migraines if I eat peanuts. No idea why, it doesn't test positive as an allergy, but if I eat it, I get a migraine. Even ingested it accidentally twice now, same reaction. However, re: medicines! there is a great site that is...
  15. I don't know if this will apply to you or not, but I can tell you what I was told by my GI. He sort of specializes in Celiac Disease, so he tends to get a lot of us celiacs who have serious problems. He said that in his experience with his celiac patients, if they have other issues with foods - allergies or sensitivities, for example - sometimes their serology...
  16. I definitely found a number of allergies, and sensitivities, after going gluten free, yup. I did have allergy tests, which identified some of them, but not all. In the end, I kept a food journal, and I kept my foods very, very simple. Nothing pre-made. That makes it much easier to keep track of what you are eating. Then I would check for patterns...
  17. Just thought I'd pass on some information that might be of interest! I was just reading a news article a couple days ago on a number of companies that, with the recession, have been substituting cheaper foods for the ones they are claiming on their package. Substituting cow's milk for goat or sheep's milk in cheeses was one that they mentioned. No companies...
  18. I agree with everyone: it's definitely not too late! But the adult diagnosis definitely presents its own challenges My father was diagnosed at about 56. He had some issues improve, and some it was too late for. He'd already had both hips replaced, and some of his joints are permanently injured from what his body has been through. Other problems have healed...
  19. I'd agree with gemini as well - the gluten has to interact with the cells inside the intestine for a reaction to occur, and from what I've read, it can't do that even if it could be absorbed through the skin. But inhalation can easily trigger a reaction. I have heard of some celiacs who worked in bakeries who had to quit, because inhaling the flour in the...
  20. Oh hon, I'm sorry to hear it's been so hard for you! I can really, really sympathize. For me, gluten wasn't what I couldn't give up. It was the sugarcane that I found out I was allergic to after I went gluten free. At first, it would make my throat swell up, so it was easy to avoid, but as soon as the reactions mellowed? I want it all the time....
  21. well, one thing to think of is that many celiacs will be lactose intolerant until their guts are healed. My GI has all his recovering celiacs avoid dairy for the first 6-12 months after they go gluten free. That's probably a good place to start. If you were going to do more avoidance, I think the 8 most common allergens might be good to avoid next - that...
  22. So glad you are feeling better. I went through something similar - very sick, dizzy, miserable after going gluten free, and only started feeling better after I dropped many, many foods. It's been 8 months now and I'm still trying to find more foods to eat, but the food log - I tried that too - worked well for me, definitely. I would second everything...
  23. so far, my daughter and I are sensitive enough that we've had to make everything from scratch or we get ill. My father and brother, on the other hand, have no trouble at all, so I think a lot depends on individual sensitivity too. good luck!
  24. Oh yeah, I felt really, really down. I also felt really, really hungry for weeks, which only made it worse. I think the hardest part is realizing just how much of our lives revolve around food: parties, movies, family dinners. Even just going out for a beer - all stuff that completely changed. I think for a lot of us, we need a little time to grieve, like...
  25. Good luck to you! :-) It's a big change, yeah? One quick thing, since as a man your doc may not have mentioned this to you! Lipstick, lip gloss, and makeup often contain gluten, as well as chapstick. There are many cases of men getting glutened from kissing their wives, so that will be something to be careful of. Same for anything your wife may use on...
