  1. It does break your heart, doesn't it? My 6 year old is a gluten-phobe and is obsessed about nothing gluten touching anything of his (not just food stuff). But my 4 year old is starting to ask why he can't have it. Just a short while ago he watched his dad eating something and said, "When I'm a daddy, I can eat gluten too." And when DH said no that he couldn...
  2. Nope, I was only tested right after my first was diagnosed (negative). But since then my body's really gone out of whack after the pregnancy/birth of my last baby (over 2 years ago). Sometimes I wonder and think about being tested again, especially lately. But I wonder if my changes now are pregnancy-related once again. Good luck! I'm thankful I just need...
  3. Everyone's different. I have a really hard time sensing if my kids are cross-contaminated. Now, they haven't eaten whole wheat pizza so I can't compare with that but on occasion I notice some behavior change or a poop change and wonder, is this from gluten? But that can really drive me crazy so I try not to worry about it much - unless the symptoms were to...
  4. This is definitely a personal decision but here's something to think about. I don't know how old your kids are but my oldest two have celiac disease and their 2 year old sister does not (we do test her, she's a-symptomatic, but is genetically predisposed - we had her tested). At the boys' last GI check-up, we briefly talked over the benefits of having a totally...
  5. Interesting. It could be the celiac caused gut problems leading to the dairy/soy issue. Or it could be separate. Funnily enough, my youngest had a milk intolerance as well. She is now 2 and seems to handle it ok (we just started trying her again on it). But she's my one without celiac - so far anyway (she is genetically predisposed, we had her tested). Best...
  6. When our son first saw his ped GI doc, we went over symptoms and he had another set of labs drawn as well as the endoscopy. We chose to do the endo because we have no family history of celiac disease or really, autoimmune disease. Plus, as the doc said, sometimes the endo can show something else that may hinder healing (luckily, not our situation). With the...
  7. With my second son we had more stool issues (his main symptom was constipation with pale, sticky stools). These did take awhile to normalize. He's just over a year and a half on the gluten-free diet and it's been in the last 6 months that they looked the most normal. We did have a gluten issue within the first 6 months (getting it from an unknown source)...
  8. My boys' had their regular GI check-up today and their doc shared with me a bit about a new study that's not yet published, it's so new. I thought I'd share it with you all. This study looked at infants and delaying the introduction of gluten to one year and the effects it had on getting celiac in predisposed individuals. This actually sounds a lot like the...
  9. Does anyone have a good alternative to Flintstones. My main reason is to avoid the dyes. I've tried others with the kids but we keep coming back to Flintstones because it seems they have nutrient issues once we try something else for awhile. The kids are already taking extra vit D and I want a vitamin with iron in it. (Seems like a lot of kid ones I looked...
  10. It's not as difficult as it first seems, unless you're a super egg lover (scrambled, boiled, etc.). I use Ener-G egg replacer in all baked goods with great success. Also, I second The Allergen-Free Baker's Handbook by Cybele Pascal. The recipes are awesome and it is my go-to dessert book. As far as subbing milk, that's super easy. I've used different types...
  11. Personally, I would not homeschool just because a child has a health condition. There are so many other factors to consider and it can be a fun, though tough, road to follow. I homeschool and overall, really love it and enjoy myself. And it makes it that much easier with mine having celiac. However, if you are involved and proactive and work with the school...
  12. AMom, just a note that my tall one has a huge appetite as well and it's persisted despite the diet (though not as intense overall). His weight was at the top of the charts as well and had dropped to the 50th percentile at diagnosis though no one was concerned about that as this happened over a four year period and he was so tall. Interestingly enough, my...
  13. Yes, my oldest is very tall for his age. He's at the top of the charts. Weight wise very skinny though and lower on the charts. I never thought much of it because my husband was a tall and skinny kid. But when we went into the GI doc for the first time he was surprised at how tall my son was because as he said, most kids are short and have stopped growing...
  14. With it being the younger child it might be more difficult to have gluten in the house. My two older children have celiac (6 and 4) but we still have gluten in the house. I do make gluten-free lunches and dinners for all (though sometimes there is gluten like with tacos or spaghetti). In general, I have a small gluten area for preparing those foods, wash...
  15. I have two sons with celiac. However, it's my oldest that is "funny" with autoimmune issues. While he has yet to be diagnosed with another autoimmune disease other than celiac, prior to diagnosis he did get sick with a fungal infection that is very common to our area but typically only affects those with immune issues (think HIV, cancer patients). So that...
  16. My six year old son recently had a bone density scan done (routine under his GI doc at 6-7 years of age) and the results show a low bone density. So now he's referring us to an endocrinologist for follow-up. Obviously some kind of supplementation is going to happen. What I really want to know is what can we expect the doctor to do initially? My son is nervous...
  17. Thanks for the review on the alarm. I've seen them advertised but wasn't sure how effective it would be. He's always peed a lot. His ped, just like yours, said some kids take longer and that he wasn't concerned until it bothered the kids. He said it could take even until he was 8, 9, 10. Yikes! My husband said he had some bedwetting issues that he was ashamed...
  18. I took my oldest to his 6 year check-up. His pediatrician and I got to talking about a few things that seemed unrelated but were bothering me. I wasn't going crazy about it but they were just things making me feel uneasy, kind of like how I felt before he got sick with something six months before his celiac diagnosis. First off, his latest GI check-up was...
  19. Just a thought. Could you get the school to agree to wipes instead of hand sanitizer? Too much hand sanitizer isn't good anyway.
  20. For other reasons, I chose to homeschool my oldest this year and he's finishing up his kindergarten year. But it's helped tremendously with food prep and worries. Definitely a bonus of homeschooling. The nice thing if you do decide to homeschool is that you're starting fresh. Your child has nothing to compare to (or downtime to get through). And really, if...
  21. And that's the trouble I ran into using the "natural" YummiBears (no iron) and why I switched to Flintstones. I'm guessing the Target brand is just their version of Flintstones. I guess I'll just deal with the dyes for now until I can find something better.
  22. Thanks for the breakfast ideas. I didn't mean to highjack the thread. I do make eggs, pancakes, etc but that's like 2nd breakfast to them. I have little hobbits in the making I guess with the amount of food they can put away (who knew a 3 and 5 year old could eat so much?!). They do like eating my version of muesli - gluten free oats with cut up apple and...
  23. Interesting. My two sons are young (3 and 5). They were doing great the first 6 months on the diet and now we're struggling to see why their symptoms are returning when nothing new has been added. They never tell me if they're hurting (they never did pre-diagnosis either) so I can only go off bathroom antics and behavior problems. I did take away their rice...
  24. I've been having a hard time with kids vitamins. I was giving the kids a "natural" vitamin (Yummi bears) to stay away from dyes. But at one of their check-ups, some vitamins were low (specifically iron and vit D). I was told to have them take Flintstones which I've been doing. But I'd really like to steer away from the dyes, etc. in Flintstones. Any suggestions...
  25. My sons do display GI symptoms but not horribly so, not enough to know if they have an accidental glutening. It's taken months for my oldest son's levels to rise to show he's consuming gluten somewhere and during that time, he's had only occasional bouts of diarrhea. I'm talking one episode every now and then compared to his going upwards of 6+ times a day...
