ARCHIVED Just Hit Me That I Can't Have A "normal" Thanksgiving
tmbarke replied to lpjourney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I did my own Thanksgiving dinner this year and was so careful - but still did not do that great. I made pumpkin pie with gluten free gingersnap crust and felt the neck reaction.......I made turkey gravy with Cornstarch and mashed potatoes with condensed milk and still felt the reaction in the neck.....I bought fresh ground sausage from the same place I've... -
ARCHIVED What Does Being Glutened Feel Like?
tmbarke replied to Jennifer2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For me it's worse! Yes I still get the ache and swelling in the neck ...........but for me the cramping and flu-like symptoms also occur.......I get cramping and body aches........my attitude is Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde! Do NOT piss me off! I'll chew you up and spit you out then run over you with a car! It's terrible! I hurt more now than I did before!... -
ARCHIVED Just Hit Me That I Can't Have A "normal" Thanksgiving
tmbarke replied to lpjourney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed in October and I was so devastated that I had to tell my family.....my support group. I invited my mom and my aunt to join ME this year for a Gluten Free Thanksgiving since I couldn't participate in a Thanksgiving with the family this year. My mom and Aunt were MORE than willing to accomodate me and my desire to still have a Thanksgiving... -
I'm Tena and I live in Grand Rapids Michigan. Doctor put me on a gluten-free diet with symptoms I was having 3-1/2 weeks ago. Swelling in the neck/throat and tongue - twisting pain in the shoulder - depression - eyes not focusing together - major F'it's - lower back pain - swelling of the legs and ankles - weight gain....sores on the sides of my mouth....

Just curious........but doesn't a frosty have malt? If you wanted to do a test.....I would have just drank a glass of milk to find out. Now you may have the gluten reaction as well.

Oh McPhena...........I wish I could hold you till you could get it all out! I know that once you can get this all out you'll at least feel a bit of peace to have unloaded such a heavy weight bearing on your heart and your shoulders. Go see the dietician! Make them earn their money that day! Tell them what it is you feel and when and how often. They may...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Experienced This?

That happened to me twice with D - doctor did a scope and told me an internal hemmroid (sp?) that burst.........it can happen with either C or D........when it bursts it presents a cherry koolaid toilet. yeah - scared me too.......and then I found it happened to another friend of mine. Your doctor will want stool samples to determine if it's internal bleeding... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed With celiac disease And Still Feel B A D ! Help
tmbarke replied to Harley0000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, certain lunchmeats are safe! I trust Hormel because it says gluten free on the box! I was also reading (but can't be positive) that Oscar Mayer lunch meats are safe - but best to check the website as I usually prefer what's on sale or my Meijer Brand lunch meats due to lower prices. The ham that was in that salad was the pkg'd chunk style ham. I... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed With celiac disease And Still Feel B A D ! Help
tmbarke replied to Harley0000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Nanc, I've been gluten-free since oct 13th It was hard to deal with that first week for sure! The 'loss' was overwhelming but I knew I couldn't go on with my reactions anymore and be happy. My first couple days I didn't really know what to eat so I did the research and came to this forum as well....just like you. My first shopping trip was to Harvest... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed With celiac disease And Still Feel B A D ! Help
tmbarke replied to Harley0000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's a change for sure.......but don't give up. Making sure your foods are fresh and you're cooking them without gluten ladened ingredients will make the difference. Once you eat simple and gluten-free........you'll go thru the withdrawls........which can be terrible to live thru and deal with. I have a few products that I buy that make food better for... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Thanksgiving
tmbarke replied to KahleFamily's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm so glad that this issue was addressed. Every year I make the Thanksgiving dinner for my family get togethers (and transport it to their location). *can be messy during a sharp turn* lol This year I have had millions of thoughts going thru my mind and nothing concrete. Our company gives Spartan Turkeys each year so I inquired if it was gluten free.... -
ARCHIVED I Get Chronically Hungry When I Eat Gluten
tmbarke replied to KipperCat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gluten to most is addictive and the body doesn't want to stop........I know it sounds nuts, but when my doctor told me to go gluten-free - I said, "but Doc! I'm a wholegrain junkie!" his response was......that is what it does to your body - although it's bad for you, your body continues to crave it so you eat more and more. That makes sense. When I got... -
ARCHIVED Alcohol Intolerance

I thought I had a reaction to a rum and cola - thinking I couldn't drink! but then I tried a gluten-free cola and never had the reaction! I know Pepsi and coke are safe as mixers so I tried that and BIG difference! I do get more of a buzz quicker so I limit them to weekends and nitecaps. I think you may try a wine and see how that affects you......... -
Sudden Insomnia After Going Gluten Free
tmbarke replied to soulcurrent's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My sleep pattern goes thru spurts. Meaning I can go to bed, sleep about 4 hrs and then I'm up.......the longer I'm up, the more apt I am to have coffee. If I try to go back to sleep, I just lay there with my eyes closed and mind wide awake. I've never had the coffee issue before going gluten-free - I could go to sleep after a POT of coffee! Now it's all... -
ARCHIVED Is Dr. Pepper Gluten Free?
tmbarke replied to Mabc's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The first week I was gluten-free, I tried a mixed drink - Rum and RC I woke at 12:30 with a swollen neck and aching shoulder - made me cry! I thought it was the rum....but read that clear rums were ok. So last nite I tried a Rum and Pepsi..........woo hoo! just a little hangover! Definitely the RC Cola! And that used to be my alltime favorite... -
Gluten free since Oct 13, 2009 1 accidental glutening (they were only trying to help) 2 Cancers in my family (Aunt fighting, Uncle died) - 2-3 Diabetics (cousin, Aunt (same with cancer) and uncle losing the fight...everything affected) - 3 heart attacks (dad died in 50's, brother in his 20's and sister in her 40's 'both survived') and 1 stroke. I was so upset at first. WTF?!? I was in a whole new world......like a new kid at school and when I went to a 'Harvest Health Food' store and asked..."what do you do with these? what are they used for?" His reply was........."To put things in your MOUTH!" I was furious and insulted! I searched and bought a small basket of food for me to eat that nite...

ARCHIVED Only A Few Weeks In And Weary At Not Trusting What S gluten-free

I love your positive outlook! Simple rewards! I'm going to start doing that one! As depressing as it gets...........it would be a great coping mechanism. Kinda like "SHOPPING THERAPY!" -
ARCHIVED Only A Few Weeks In And Weary At Not Trusting What S gluten-free
tmbarke replied to Medz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know how difficult it is to have to struggle.........my coworker made a gluten free salad but didn't check the ham........I let him know and he appreciated the honesty (as he is learning and wants to include me in work parties) I haven't dared to go to any restaurants...Maybe just for coffee talk, but even then will bring my own cup. I thought about how... -
The other most bothersome thing is a sharp pins and needles feeling in my feet at night. I am chalking this up as gluten withdrawal. I am sorry we have so many similar things going on but a little relieved, too! Thomas I can relate to the tingles But I didn't really feel those until I had an accidental gluten from ham - layed in bed with flu like...

For me (2-1/2 weeks gluten-free) I knew I would be going thru withdrawls, but wasn't exactly sure what to expect. The first few days were rather simple aside from the 'hunt for food options'........I was feeling new again! Then it happened......I crashed mentally. I couldn't pay attention well to my job or things happeining around me - like an idiot stupor...

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like A Glutening To You?
tmbarke replied to Frances03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good Advice. My larger meals are saved for the weekends - this saturday I made plain hamburger with classico pasta sauce(I used the Vodka sauce) - topped over Schar's gluten-free pasta (rice/corn blend) with a salad. During the week....... Coffee and Banana for breakfast - yogurt if still hungry for a mid morning snack I also drink V8 Splash or Fusion... -

tmbarke replied to wantsomedammpizza's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My families response was - well, guess it's fruits and veggies for you! I wanted to slap them........hard. Being insensitive is one of the cruelest and selfish acts of anyone to make someone feel worse than you already do having to go thru such a life changing event. Gloat! Stand tall knowing that you have the answers to your misery and are able to do...
