  1. If he is so sick after going back on gluten, I would do the tests asap, like today, and then take him gluten-free again, and just wait and see what the results are. There is no guarantee they will be negative, and there is no way to know if they'll be positive. Do the test, then the diet again (like immediately after the tests, don't wait for results). Between...
  2. Do you mean a *whole stick of butter*? Or do you mean enough butter to coat the pan? Merika
  3. Hi Nancy, I too got worse before better, and I had the same dramatic initial improvement. In fact, I never had D or C eating gluten, but things sure got funky from about 3-9 mos post-gluten-free. I'm guessing on the time frame, as it's been about 2 yrs gluten-free for me now, and things are getting better, and the funky poops are gone, lol. I think my...
  4. There are several labs around the country - us biotek, great smokies, york allergy, and I can't remember the others. I think they are useful and did one a year ago. Might redo it this year. The other option is to do a total elimination diet. To get some info on that, start at www.askdrsears.com . Basically, you only eat a few basic staples for a few...
  5. Thanks for the report I'll have to remember about the ducks. i LOVE ducks Sounds like a fun trip (well, except for the throwing up part, lol). Merika
  6. Some celiacs do have problems with their tooth enamel. It can absolutely be related. I have called to check on dental products in the past. Just call their office and ask for what they'll use, and get the company info. Then call. Then you'll know before you get in there. Everyone's been very helpful when I've done it. Merika
  7. We loved Ikea too, until one of the staff confided in us that sometimes the Ikea employees use the fryer (which should be gluten-free, as nothing gluten-y gets fried there from the menu) for personal use - ie. for their fozen chicken nuggets!!! Argh!!! I'm sure this isn't "allowed" and varies from Ikea to Ikea. Just a word of caution. Merika Ps. I...
  8. Hi Beverly, I am contemplating the same thing - getting preg and how to deal with that, and the baby afterwards, and the up/down days of celiac - and I already have one kid, lol All I can say is get thinkin about some ideas for support. Do you have family nearby? Would you be willing to hire someone? Is there even a neighborhood kid who really...
  9. Mr Bambam, Soy is a super common allergy. It does help to eliminate (and is probably better for everyone's health anyway to avoid). She may be one of the "lucky" people who are only allergic to the soy protein, and not to soy oil. This would also mean soy lecithin is ok, which will make your life much easier. Hydrolyzed/texturized vegetable protein...
  10. Hi Elonwy, Good luck and let us know how it goes. Dh has family there, but we haven't been since I've been gluten-free. Would be curious to hear your experiences. Let me just say, that coming from LA, there's not a lot to eat there no matter what you eat I did go to the wild oats though Best place in town, IMHO. Merika (apologies to any...
  11. The hidden world of natural flavors.....did you know that chicken flavor (from chickens) is a common ingredient in "vegetarian chicken flavor fake-meats"? Hahahaha, so all those vegetarians out there eating all their fake meat and fake sausages, and tofu-dogs with "meat flavor" are actually consuming animals??? Merika long-time vegetarian and abstainer...
  12. Hi, Just reporting that my order of stuff arrived today from GFP....AND when I was at whole foods today they had in TONS of the ginger spice cake that initially made me order online (snort). Merika
  13. Um...so the chicken strips were cooked or raw? And if raw, how did you tell they were done? Merika (vegetarian since leaving home, eating meat for the last few months, and not really sure how to cook it!)
  14. Bwahahahaaha, that's because I bought it all up Just kidding, but I did last week order online from GFP for the first time because my local whole foods has been out of the ginger spice cake mix (which makes the most delicious ginger bread men) for over a month! And, you know, if you're going to order online and pay shipping, you might as well try it all...
  15. Plain yams are gluten-free. Merika
  16. She should be having normal, adult-like poops, once a day. Actually, from a bit before age one, this is true of healthy kids. Merika PS. Generally, testing in kids age 2 and up is pretty reliable. I'd definitely test first, and then do the diet (like while you're waiting for results and then some).
  17. LOVE gluten-free lasagne We use DeBoles rice lasagne and don't precook at all. Just layer 'em in all crunchy and it cooks just fine. Merika
  18. True, depending where you live, rice and potatoes can be ridiculously cheap. If you live near an East Indian or Asian or Hispanic neighborhood, you can buy huge 10 lb or more bags of rice for almost nothing. It's waaaay cheaper than buying little boxes of rice at the standard grocery store. And potatoes - my dad once brought me a 50 lb bag of potatoes...
  19. That is some good advice from Jenvan. My mom did a similar thing - she didn't know about celiac, but found she felt better not eating wheat. So she mostly avoided it, but didn't know about the rye, barley, oat thing, or that wheat was in so darn many things. Then she ate wheat again for a while, started to feel bad again, tried the low-wheat diet, which...
  20. Hi Mr Bambam, Self-diagnosis is perfectly valid for me Did you say when she went gluten-free? It seems from your post maybe she just started this summer....? I just posted about this on another thread a few days/weeks ago....my own experience was that for several months after going gluten-free I just felt better and better. Then I started to feel...
  21. I had a similar thought - about getting a handheld device for shopping at the store and such - when I was first diagnosed. Over time, though, I've found I don't need one. The important items stay in my head. I do stick with a fairly natural diet, and don't keep track of a lot of junk food. And I don't keep lists of stuff "just in case" because I figure those...
  22. It could well be. How old is your dd? When we first realized my son was allergic to soy, the first symptoms we noticed were typically 3-4 days after soy ingestion. As he got older, and we became more savvy to subtle (and not so subtle) early symptoms, we found we could tell within 12-24 hours that he'd eaten some. Symtoms are still worst for him 3-4 days...
  23. Jk, are you still on the meds or were you able to stop them after a while? Merika
  24. Tiffany, (((Hugs)))) and sympathies over the family visit. My inlaws were here too, and were very conscientious about contamination, moreso than I expected, yet I did ask my dh to crawl out of bed one night and completely wash down the dining table which they had all just devoured a pizza at. I just couldn't get to sleep thinking about it, and my 3 yr...
  25. Exclusion diet....is that the British term for elimination diet? www.askdrsear.com has some good tips on how to start an elimination diet. Merika
