  1. My son gets little sores around the corner of his mouth, and a rash there in general if he gets something he's allergic to. Perhaps she's been glutened? We treat it with vaseline, and it goes away in several days. This may be irrelevant if it's something different than what we have Merika
  2. Hi Chrissy, If I recall, you have several newly gluten-free kids, several eat-anything kids, and dh eats gluten? I would be tempted to make the house gluten-free as much as possible. For us, this means dh MUST eat his gluten at the kitchen table, and wash his hands afterwards. No more crumbs around the house. See if you can work towards making...
  3. Hi Erin, Sorry to hear about the ham If your baby is sensitive to gluten, then he may be feeling a touch of what you are. If he's not sensitive to gluten (and I expect you don't know yet if he is or not), he may just have a bug. We've all been sick here. Even the visiting in-laws from another state arrived sick Hope it all passes quickly......
  4. Nathela, There are lots of rooms with kitchens in Palm Springs. Lots and lots. As for hotels, no idea who could make gluten-free food, but I would imagine the pricier ones could handle it - and there are a good selection of those too in Palm Springs Have fun! Merika
  5. Hi Sally, Ahhhh that makes me feel better. I am almost 2 years gluten free and still not completely better. It was a long 12 years of really feeling like cr&p before I got a diagnosis, add in a baby to that time, and my body was wiped out when I finally went gluten-free. Mieux, I know just what you mean about getting used to feeling sick all...
  6. Hi BK, I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse Initially after going gluten-free i felt fabulously better. Everything got better for several months. Then I started to feel worse. And worse. And worse. I wasn't getting gluten. I don't know what it was. Additional food allergies were probably part of it. But i have another theory...
  7. Berneses, Thanks for posting that. I sometimes wish there were a local celiac support group, like I hear about with caner-folks and other illnesses. It seems there aren't enough of us, or it's not warranted enough - I guess by the hospital wings that host these sorts of groups (lol, what would a celiac be doing in a hospital anyways...) Los Angeles does...
  8. Comfort food?!? Is there such a thing for a celiac raised in a gluten-eating country??? Blech, the last thing I could be comforted by is food...... Merika
  9. i don't use coffee filters, but would assume they'd be ok...just don't set them down on a gluten counter while you fill your pot Merika also back to drinking coffee after the baby......
  10. Tamara, I almost had that same breakdown with my dad over xmas preparations last week, lol. Smunkee, As for the inlaws, go over (or send your dh over if he's ok) and go through all their cabinets and check the labels on everything they feed your kid. They may actually appreciate it. I had to do it with my own parents (and my mom is gluten-free). But it...
  11. Have you done the standard blood test on him? merika
  12. Hi Erin, Lotion, hair spray, lipstick - anything that can get on your hands or hers and then into her mouth is a potential contaminator, including toys like playdough (which has gluten). At this age, basically everything gets into their mouths. Luckily for us, there are many mainstream (and not) gluten-free lotions and potions Just gotta read labels...
  13. In winter, I'm cold too - and I live in Los Angeles! For the last two years I've slept with a heating pad, at least until i warm up. Last winter a nutritionist advised me to take some very natural probiotics that felt like it nearly killed me and I have never been so icy bone-cold in my life for the 3 days I took them. I've had my thyroid checked and...
  14. You might want to consider doing a Total Elimination Diet. Your kids may have food allergies/sensitivities which can cause gastro distress and bedwetting. www.askdrsears.com is a good place to start on info for a "ted". Merika
  15. Yumm, I haven't heard of this brand. I'll have to check it out
  16. If you're on a gluten-free diet and celiac, your pregnancy and miscarry rates are the same as anyone else. And they're only slightly higher if you're not diagnosed. I wouldn't worry about it too much -- as an example, I was very sick for years undiagnosed, it took me & dh ohhhhh maybe one or two tries to conceive, and I had a great pregnancy - felt...
  17. This happened to me too, and other celiacs I know (adult). In fact, it took me well over a year to start to feel better after I started to feel worse gluten-free. The first few months gluten-free I felt great, then everything got worse for a long time. Merika
  18. I would hesitate to feel a child a heavily gluten diet because some medical theory thinks maybe something could result from it. Remember when they told us margarine was healthier for us than butter? Follow your instincts. If your child is not well, do what you think is best. If you suspect celiac, and health insurance/money will not allow you to get her...
  19. Hi Becky, The only other "standard medical" option to biopsy is the blood test. Possibly an allergist would perform this, or a pediatrician or specialist. It's a simple test, and I've heard will be replacing the biopsy in children soon - assuming the doc runs the full panel and not just one or two markers (which I've heard enough of on this board of docs...
  20. Hi, Wish I could help you. Wish I could go with you All I know is from working in a lot of Tunisian and Morroccan restaurants. Couscous is not gluten free. Flour may be in ALL the soups (lentil, etc). Flatbread is common and clearly not gluten-free. The biggest problem I see is the communal hands nature of eating in the middle east - where everyone...
  21. Oh my goodness, doctors!!! Too big? He's means too old right? Such Garbage! I was diagnosed at 32. My mother was diagnosed at 59. Many of us are asymptomatic or barely symptomatic as kids yet celiac slowly wears our bodies down until whammo we are in cr&ppy health. And then (if we're lucky) we get diagnosed as adults. Yes, adults!!! Doctors can...
  22. I'm not an expert on this, having just converted from vegetarianism, but my understanding is that in the deli section are glazed hams and other meats with coatings and flavorings, and these can contain gluten. So, one, you'd want to check on the one you're buying, and two, the slicing machine slices all meats and doesn't get cleaned between meats/customers...
  23. Hi Kim, I've never heard of this happening. The peanut thing you're talking about is a specific kind of allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. I've never heard of anyone developing an anaphylactic shock to any food because of celiac. A food may irritate us and make us feel sick, and may slow our health from improving, but that's all IME. If...
  24. Thought I'd post this here, as we're in the season, and I just got off the phone with a very helpful customer service rep: i called Spangler brand Candy Canes. They are gluten free BUT though their ingredients are soy-free, they lubricate the machines and molds with an oil containing soy lecithin So we'll be hanging all our candy canes on the tree ...
  25. Hmm, didn't know that. I wonder how common it is? I've always avoided it for the soy contamination... Merika
