kareng replied to mr120's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you want to be diagnosed with Celiac Disease, you need to continue eating gluten until testing is completed. -
The Funny Pages - Tickle Me Elbow - The Sequel
kareng replied to TriticusToxicum's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in daddy's room." A long silence was broken at last by his... -

They make these "dump" cakes at Boy Scouts/ They call them cobbler. They are also good with a can of pie fillings - apple (with spice cake) , peach, blueberry, cherry - with chocolate cake mix. They cook them in a dutch oven in the fire (coals on top of lid). Two nights ago we had pasta with cheese baked on top. Last night we had cheeseburger pie... -
ARCHIVED Developing Food Allergies After Being Gluten Free
kareng replied to sweetsailing's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds like an allergy. Maybe you are eating a lot more of something than you did before? For example - xanthum gum is in a lot of gluten-free baked foods and not as much in other foods. Or you used to eat rice once a month but now are eating it twice a week and gluten-free crackers, pastas, etc may contain rice. Just a couple of examples. You may... -
ARCHIVED Celiac & Long Term Nexium Use
kareng replied to lesleyag's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just don't want to hear you complaining that the people you " helped" didn't respond..... Cause that happens. You might want to try to help people with these same issues who are currently posting? -
ARCHIVED Spacey/disconnected All The Time?
kareng replied to Inki's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Funny... I have heard from posters that don't check the dates of the thread and then get mad when people don't respond. We have plenty of threads from the last few days to respond to and maybe actually help the OP. -
ARCHIVED Celiac & Long Term Nexium Use
kareng replied to lesleyag's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just an FYI - the posters on this thread may not be active after 6 years -
Looks like we are resurrecting this thread. I haven't been able to find the Canyon bakehouse kind. I got another kind - Three Bakers . The main flavor is the caraway seeds. I have only eaten it by taking in from the freezer, buttering and making a grilled cheese. It's tasty, but not as good as " real" rye. I had a sample of a gluten-free rye bread...

ARCHIVED Did Your Vitamin D Levels Go Up?
kareng replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you had Celiac, Levels would go up as you heal and can absorb it better from foods. It's spring/ summer - so you would get more from the sun. In the winter, the angle of the earth makes the sun very weak up where you live and harder to get any D through your skin. Here is an explanation of how that works. It has to do with the skin and the liver. ... -
ARCHIVED What Is Used In Endoscopy Prep?
kareng replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You would want to check with your GI doctor. Ours doesn't give any special thing for the colonoscopy clean out. You use OTC laxatives and stool softeners. -
ARCHIVED I Gave Up Waiting For Insurance Approval...
kareng replied to Georgia-guy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
On the beer - gluten-free beer does not taste quite like regular beer. It might be best to wait a few months gluten-free before trying it. Sort of allow your mouth to forget the taste of regular beer. Ciders are good - some kinds are sweeter than others. Watch out for "gluten removed" beers. These are made with barley. They are "tested" for gluten but... -
ARCHIVED Who's Allergic To Brown Rice?
kareng replied to Celiacgirl1's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You have been gluten-free for over 10 years but gotten worse. Obviously, gluten either isn't an issue or there are other problems you are having. It doesn't sound like you are eating much, so, of course you will be to skinny. Rather than eliminate foods based on questionable testing, perhaps an elimination diet or even just a food journal would help? But... -
ARCHIVED Who's Allergic To Brown Rice?
kareng replied to Celiacgirl1's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Here's what you were looking for on the genes: Open Original Shared Link "If I have a gene for celiac disease, does that I mean I have it? Genetics don’t diagnose celiac disease. They do, however, clarify whether an individual is “at-risk” for it. If this is the case, you should closely monitor your symptoms and submit to blood tests every 2-3 years or im... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
kareng replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I saw you mentioned somewhere that you had a lot of San J sauces. I think this is a great idea! I have one that wants peanut sauce and one that really doesn't. This could work... My hub eats the chunks because he is an adult and thinks he should. but he hates them. The boys ( who are technically adults) pick out the big pieces. -
ARCHIVED Minimisation By Family/friends.
kareng replied to Chrissie32's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think sometimes, people compare Celiac to what it could have been, like cancer. We are lucky that we are " cured" by a few diet restrictions. So people think.....that's not so bad. They just haven't figured out all the ramifications of the gluten-free diet and what a pain in the a$$ it can be. Close friends and family will see as you go along, a few... -
I am not sure that is true now. You can read the label on the syrup and see. They change syrups from time to time.

ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Waves Of Depression Post Exposure?
kareng replied to MermaidPaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There may not be much you can do about it except try to prevent the glutenings. I don't know how long you have been gluten-free, but it gets easier and you learn how to avoid the "glutenings" -
ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Waves Of Depression Post Exposure?
kareng replied to MermaidPaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe there is a hormonal element? You say before and during your period this is worse. Maybe check with your OB/GYN. There are things they can do to help with that. -
Ask to read the bottles or tea bag box. They are usually really nice that way. I say I have an allergy - just easier & don't have to go into a big explanation. I usually don't get syrups, etc. at one time, some Fraps supposedly had gluten, but the exact formulas change so look at the website.

I actually have and choose to listen to the research of actual doctors over Chiropracters. I use the Univ. of Chicago celiac center links because they are easy to find and read for most people. Also, they participate & initiate some of the leading research in Celiac disease. I attended the ICDS in Sept and this was not a topic. -
Sometimes, if you have been successfully treating the Celiac, you would qualify. You would need to show that your yearly antibodies are normal. If the job doesn't require special accommodations - like feeding you- I don't see why it wouldn't be Ok.

ARCHIVED Curious About Some Things...
kareng replied to Susy1986's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Why wouldn't a " nurse" give you the Celiac blood work before you went gluten free. She knows going gluten-free will effect the accuracy of the blood work. This seems very irresponsible of her. Not sure how she could diagnose you without any tests? -

There is really no valid science to this " cross- reactivity ". Open Original Shared Link What’s with all the talk about certain types of food causing “cross-reactivity?” There is not yet reliable data about cross-reactivity. As for the alleged possibility that many gluten-free foods or drinks (such as coffee, milk, orange juice, etc.) would trigg... -
ARCHIVED Dr Won't Test Me For Celiac Because I Don't Have "classic" Symptoms
