  1. I have had that and made something like it before. It's sooooo tasty. I love near eastern cooking. The Greeks have a similar kind of yoghurt-honey cake, made with farina, but here it's adapted for almond flour. I've made it, it's very tasty and very moist and very, very rich. Also from Recipe Zaar (I love that site): Open Original Shared Link This...
  2. I'm sorry that I have no cooking tips for this, but I just had to comment on the name "spud puppies". I love it. I'm going to make that one of my fictional band names, if that's okay!! Good luck on figuring out your recipe!! Sorry I can't be of any help. ~Allison
  3. Janie: There is a major NON-GMO movement in Europe where here Monsanto is King. But wheat, except for, I imagine wild wheat did not grow in North America and had to come from Europe when North America was settled by Europeans. I might be able to believe that European wheat plants are less GMO than ours here, BUT I have a bit of a hard time believing...
  4. Hey, that's great too!! Yours sounds great too. I have found, for the most part, as long as yeast is not involved, it's much easier to make substitutions. If yeast is involved, it really becomes a chemical reaction. I am not a confident baker, BUT sometimes I do muster up the courage. And, if I do not like the recipe (or it plainly doesn't work) I am...
  5. You're welcome. It's really, really tasty!! And it's going to be gorgeous for breakfast tomorrow. ~Allison
  6. Hi All: I made some really yummy banana bread using Bob's Red Mill all purpose baking flour (a combo of garbanzo bean, fava bean, potato starch, tapioca and sorghum flours). I had four bananas that were really, really going to be dead if I did not use them today. So I tried making banana bars out of a different book (that did not work and turned out...
  7. I know this is a known one. But I am a black licorice nut. Black licorice has wheat in it!!! Can anyone explain to me why??? I knew that before I went gluten-free but it never fails to blow my mind, you know!! ~Allison
  8. I think I read that too. Cows and other ruminants should graze on grass. I stand corrected. So wheat and grain is pretty toxic to ruminants too and to most other creatures. I can't imagine moose being fed grain but then I don't imagine moose being captive creatures, you know. I wonder what the Sami people feed their reindeer? Thanks for mentioning...
  9. Martial Artist: Seven years ago, when I finally went, sick as a dog, to a naturapath with debilitating IBS, and she first suggested that I give up wheat, I was utterly shocked!! What do yo mean, give up wheat????? I grew up Italian American. I had spent my entire life eating pasta and bread. I knew no other way of cooking. I had to make a giant...
  10. Hiya: I am in a bit of the same boat as you, and no, you are not crazy. I am still trying to find out my blood test result levels but my biopsy seems normal. Here is how I see it. You can be gluten intolerant and not have celiac disease. If you are celiac disease, have an extreme form of gluten intolerance. But you don't have to have celiac disease...
  11. You are welcome all. Good luck with the brown rice. Carol Fenster doesn't have a recipe for rice milk, but I found one here: Open Original Shared Link Good luck!! ~Allison
  12. Hi all: As promised here is the almond milk recipe from Carol Fenster's 1,000 Gluten Free Recipes. This recipe makes two cups of almond milk: 1/2 cup blanched almonds, 2 cups warm water, 1 tsp. honey 1/4 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. xanthan gum 1/8 tsp. salt, or to taste. In a blender process all of the ingredients until very, very...
  13. You can supposedly very easily make your own almond milk I saw a recipe for it somewhere ... oh yes, I think in Carl Fenster's 1001 gluten-free recipes. It's just a matter of getting those almond soft enough so that they won't kill the blades of your food processor!! If you like I can type out the recipe from the book when I get home. Let me...
  14. God, I love almond milk too. I'm not drinking it by the cup full but I do take my vitamins with it in the morning and I put it in tea. I have been getting Pacific brand organic almond milk. The ingredients are: Filtered Water, Evaporated Cane Juice, Almonds, Tricalcium Phosphates, Sea Salt, Potassium Citrate, Carrageenan, Soy Lecithin, Riboflavin...
  15. You are welcome, Raven I also like the fact that the scottie dog licorice pieces are affordable!! If you can't find them, send me an email. I'll send you a box. For a fellow black licorice nut ~Allison
  16. I very much second the Food for life brown rice tortillas. God, those are yummy!! You just have to keep them in the fridge. ~Allison
  17. Raven: If I look up licorice scottie dogs on Amazon, I find this: Gimbals-Fine-Candies-Licorice-10-Pound/dp/B000Z3V3LM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1271085888&sr=1-1 The modified food starch should be corn only. And everything else is okay. So that makes me wonder if you see scottie dog black licorice if it isn't all...
  18. See next post, can't delete!! ~A.
  19. Raven: It's a Trader Joes brand only it seems. It is marked that way. If you go up the the service counter too, you will find a handout that you can take away with you with all the gluten-free things that Trader Joes carries. They were very, very helpful at my local one. If you have a TJ local to you, check it out. It's not expensive at all and there...
  20. I was picking up some almond butter at Trade Joes today and then I was looking around at all of the other stuff and I hit upon the licorice. I am not a crazy-for-sweets person but the one thing that I miss, deeply, is black licorice. I always loved licorice and it shocked me to know that it was made with wheat!! So I looked at their licorice and...
  21. Bev, this happened to me too. What do you mean I have acid reflux and small ulcers in my esophagus?? How come I have never felt it?? I'm on protonix now and my doc wants me to have a repeat scope in two months to see how the little ulcers are doing. still waiting on the results of my endopscopy and blood tests too. Next week sometime. I'm crossing...
  22. I have two really good gluten-free books that I use for cupcakes and cookies. They are both printed by Enjoy Life. They are: Enjoy Life's Cupcakes and sweet treats for everyone! / by Betsy Laasko and Enjoy Life's Cookies for everyone! / by Leslie Hammond and Betsy Laasko All of the recipes are gluten-free but most contain no dairy...
  23. Hi: Well, ya know there is always plain old water If juice is too sweet, you can water it down or dilute it with tonic water too. Juice is inherently sweet, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. You can get no added sugar cranberry juice (just make sure they don't replace the sugar with sweetener). Apple and Eve have really good juice as does Northland...
  24. Tehana: If you have a lack of support, then I sugget joining a support group in your area. You will meet all kinds of new people who have similar stories as you do. Years of problems, dismissing doctors, and finally getting rid of one big thing that seems to help a great deal, diagnosis of celiac or not. Where are you in the world? There is a...
  25. Mmmmmmm, gooey reddish slugs .... We'll see if I get pictures back from the endo. when the results come back. The human body is an amazing thing, isn't it??? So intricate and one thing can just upset the delicate balance ... ~Allison
