  1. Hello all: For those of you who have much more research and have lived this for longer, can you tell me if those who are obviously gluten intolerant without being diagnosed celiac, face cancers and other health problems down the line if they continue to eat gluten or become glutened? Obviously celiac requires that you be gluten free for medical...
  2. I am in the same boat as you, not diagnosed as celiac, but with a very pronounced gluten intolerance. Notice that I wrote gluten and not wheat. Thankfully I hate beer and ales. Wheat does horrible things to me. Barley and rye give me massive exhaustion and give me those heavy limbs and neuropathic chills. I don't have any damage to my intestines but...
  3. An EGD is considered this: EGD is an abbreviation of Esophagogastrodudenoscopy. It involves visualization of esophagus, stomach and duodenum through a long tube with camera at its one end. So is that the procedure they use to check for villi damage in the small intestine?

    ARCHIVED Doctor In Newport, Ri?

Lilbit, see my private message to you I don't know this guy but I hope you have a good experience. ~Allison
  5. Hi lilbit: And welcome to the boards You sound like you are going for a lot of tests. Yes, the endo is very important to either diagnose or rule out celiac. BUT, if you've ever been diagnosed with IBS then the GI doc will want to check for colitis issues too. It's not a bad idea to rule out colon issues, esp. if you have a few polyps down...
  6. Tacos and burritos are great, as long as you get full corn tortillas (hard or soft). I am not a big fan of corn but I do like the brown rice flour tortillas from Food for Life. Make sure they are not the sprouted ones and they say gluten free on the bag, though!! Those are great. Make your own. Just avoid Taco Bell, okay
  7. Is the Nestle the one in the yellow bag? Then I think the brand I was looking at was Nestle. Told ya I hardly ate chocolate!! I'm glad that they are okay. I'll give them a try. I am just dying to know what vanillin is, though!! As I understand it it's some kind of artificial vanilla flavoring. You know I just found an article on Wikipedia. Open...
  8. Hi All: I was thinking of making some choc. orange bread soon and I was looking at choc. drops and the labels. I am not really into choc. at all (Oh the blashpemy ...) but I see that Hershey's dark and milk choc. contain a flavoring called "vanillin" - I haven't been able to find out anything about it, though and I wonder if any of you chocaholics...
  9. I am not aware of Taco Bell serving actual corn tortillas, though. I am pretty sure they are all flour ones. I used to occasionally do Taco Bell. It's the one fast food that wouldn't make me as ill as the others. Yeah, I am pretty sure those are flour tortillas ...
  10. Oooh, I haven't seen that. I can get coconut milk ... I will look for the coconut kefir too. Thanks for the tip,
  11. Oh yes, Raven, I miss phylo too
  12. Hello Lucia: Firstly don't fret!!! Lactose intolerance is quite common anyway without having to deal with gluten intolerance. I'll tell you what I am able to do. I was taken off milk very young (6 months), just couldn't process/digest it. The only dairy I have really been able to digest is butter and yoghurt, plain greek yoghurt being the best. I...
  13. Claire: Most of those vegetarian meat replacements contain wheat, if I learned it right. I think you're beyond cross contamination there!!
  14. With Thai you are generally safe ... there is is soy sauce used in Thai food than in any other Asian cuisine. The noodles tend to be rice based or the meal is served with rice. Coconut milk is a staple to make curries. If you have problems with nuts, you may have to avoid certain things, however, like pad thai. You might have to ask you server what...
  15. I know, I know!! I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but it was important for me to let you know the reddy bread has soy ... Sorry, Kareng .... and Raven too ...
  16. I've been intrigued about this too. But for those with problems with soy, they are made with soy flour. I know that Raven's got problems with soy so that is a no go for her. I have a site with the nutritional info here so you can all see. Click on the label ingredients and you can see it larger. Open Original Shared Link I miss pita bread too. I...
  17. Mamarie, if you are just gluten intolerant, yes you need to be just as careful. If 1 in 133 persons is Celiac (1-3 million people) then the estimate is that there are 15-20 million more people who are gluten intolerant. And that is a huge number. You will find that when you go gluten free and it all expels you will probably be more sensitive to even...
  18. Good luck with everything. I hope you get some concrete answers. But, and please remember this, even if you don't and aren't diagnosed with celiac then you have positive reactions to glutinous grains and oats and you will be staying away from them soon. I hope you can go gluten free asap after you appt. tomorrow. Best of luck with everything and I...
  19. It's unbelievable what wheat flour ISN'T in you know!! In a discussion with my Celiac/GI group concerning food labelling, I discovered that manufacturers will often put wheat flour on candy wrappers to prevent them from sticking and among the candy itself to prevent it from sticking together. Because the wheat is not IN the candy, they don't have to...
  20. Eeel is my favorite too. You CAN ask your server to make a fresh batch of eel without the sauce. It's been done for me before. And it's all been okay That being said, I rarely eat out and when I do it's usually Indian because I know it's completely safe except for the breads (unless it's the lentil and rice dosas) ~Allison
  21. I am really hoping that I won't be one of the gluten intolerants that have a problem with oats. But I will get some BRM gluten-free oats and see what happens. I'll let you all know But I am crossing my paws, ~Allison
  22. Thanks Roda and Missy's Mom. I should own stock in BRM. It's the main part of what is in my freezer!! I'll look for those next weekend and see what they do to me. I am hoping they will be okay. I really like making oatmeal bread, and this bread was so good!! Thanks again, ~Allison
  23. Hi all: Well it's Sunday and I made a loaf of oatmeal bread for the week. As an experiment I used Quaker rolled oats to see if I would get a reaction and I have. Wheat makes me stomach sick/and gives me the big D as well as making me miserable all over. Barley, rye and now oats I know have the effect of making me very tired and giving me those...
  24. Perhaps, Nora_N who lives in Norway can tell you where to get sorghum flour? When I look up the swedish word for sorghum, I find that it is sorghum. On the off chance that there is an Indian market (!!) near you, you can get sorghum flour there, it's called jowar flour. Aside from that, maybe Nora_N will know. Sorry I can't be of any more...
  25. Oops!! I meant to type this, sorry!! 1 cup millet flour, 1/2 cup sorghum flour, 1/2 cup corn starch, 1/2 cup potato starch, 1/2 cup tapioca starch Sorghum is pretty much sorghum. I don't know if you can substitute things. However, if you can find a place which sells Bob's Red Mill Flour, they do have a bag od sorghum flour. Good...
