  1. Noon Eastern time--eleven AM Central. Ten in the mountains and nine on the left coast. Much later in the UK.
  2. If it is made from a gluten grain, it will be labeled as such. It is rarely derived from wheat, and in that case it must be labeled either as "wheat maltodextrin" or "maltodextrin (wheat)." If you see the single word "maltodextrin" it is not a source of gluten.
  3. Noon here and in Ottawa. I'll be at the store and will try to look in. When I came by today, Lisa posted that Jess was early, so I just had a peek, but didn't stay and so missed the Second Coming as well.
  4. I had my first endoscopy, the one that diagnosed celiac disease, on a Friday. I could have had the results on the following Tuesday, but for personal reasons chose to have the follow-up appointment on the Thursday.
  5. In the US, if the food starch was wheat it would have to say so. Caramel color is safe in the US. Flavors are usually safe. Wheat can not be hidden--it must be declared. Barley can be hidden in "natural flavors," but this is usually not the case. Barley malt is relatively expensive, so manufacturers want you to know it is there and list it as malt, not...
  6. McCormick will clearly disclose by name any gluten grain present. If you don't see any of the words "wheat," "rye," "barley," or "oats" then none of them are present in the product.
  7. Um, Oliver is doing well, but he is not a dog. He is bigger that some of the dogs in the 'hood.
  8. I eat products from shared facilities. If you allow any gluten foods into your house, then your house is a shared facility. With respect to shared equipment, it depends on the type of product and how thoroughly the lines can be cleaned. Celiacs vary in their sensitivity. In time, you will find what is right for you, but I would suggest trying foods...
  9. Since my blood glucose meter has a memory, I don't want to mess up the history. Oliver has his own meter with its own memory. They are the same brand, but different models, so the test strips are the same. We get blood from his ear, near the edge. There is a blood vessel there that is fairly easy to find. That's where Janice (our vet) showed us to get...
  10. I think I edited my post while you were posting, Bev.
  11. "This post was edited" is an optional tag. If you don't want it to appear, clear (or don't check) the box at the bottom of the edit window while editing. Or, use "quick edit" which never puts the tag in. Had Oliver to the vet this morning, and he is doing well. The bladder infection has cleared up, and his mobility is noticeably improved. Sugars were...
  12. I have never found an injectable substance that contained gluten. Gluten acts as a thickening agent, which is not anything you want in an injection or IV drip--it would tend to clog the needle. So, while I have no specific knowledge about this product, I highly doubt that it is a source of gluten.
  13. This is interesting, and would be a radical change in the position of the CCA. I have not seen anything in their newsletter about this, and I do try to read it carefully. Food must conform to the labeling rules in the country where it is sold, regardless of where the ingredients come from, so at least in the US, wheat would have to be declared. The "check...
  14. Tacos. Psilly pharting was indeed a juicy hot topic once upon a time. It was a real gas. I note with some interest that many posters here insist that their spouse/partner is much more prolific in this regard than they are. Me, I just try to stay upwind. Airplanes don't make me phart, but air security makes me sick. I used to fly all the time and...
  15. Quick visit to catch up and then go make dinner.
  16. In the United States, there is a wheat-derived ingredient in the flavor added to the oil in which the McDonalds fries are partially fried before freezing. Independent testing by Dr. Steven Taylor, a recognized expert at the University of Nebraska, has found no detectable gluten in the end product. Make your own decision. The question has been debated...
  17. Progresso is a General Mills brand. The agent you talked to described the policy accurately. If a gluten-source grain is in the food, the name of the grain will appear. That means that if none of the words wheat, barley, rye, or oats appear in the ingredient list, nothing derived from those grains is in the product. The same policy applies at Kraft, ConAgra...
  18. Do the two olives in my martini count? How about the pumpkins in the pie? Good morning-after, everyone! We're off today, so we have time to unwind.
  19. It is Thanksgiving. Calories and sugar don't count today, right? Bacon, fried eggs and waffles with real maple syrup in the morning, with lots of coffee. Potato chips with sour cream and onion dip mid afternoon, while taking a break from baking. Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, gluten-free gravy and rice two hours ago. Pumpkin pie with...
  20. Do you have a pink cow yet? They apparently give strawberry milk, which is so much more interesting than the chocolate milk you get from the brown cows. I hope it is true that calories consumed on Thanksgiving don't count. A busy afternoon baking saw us make brownies, French bread and pumpkin pie. Then we ate roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and are...
  21. The fact that a particular individual with celiac disease reacts to a specific food in no way proves that the reaction is caused by gluten. Many people with celiac disease have other food intolerances. No scientific evidence that I have seen has shown meat to contain gluten, and many scientific tests have been done that show the opposite. But you are right...
  22. Yup, it is as crazy as it sounds. Meat is gluten-free, regardless of what the animal was fed. This applies not just to chicken, but to all meats. It is sad how misinformed some people are.
  23. No vaccine that I know of contains gluten. I do not know of any injectable medicine or vaccine that contains gluten. Gluten acts as a thickener and that is something you do not want in an injectable substance. This is equally true of intravenous drips. The flu vaccines are cultured on eggs, so anyone who is allergic or otherwise sensitive to eggs should...
  24. Johnsonville products vary in their gluten-free status. Many are, but some are not. Read the label. I can't comment on the specific one mentioned as I have never seen it.
