  1. A fine day of weather here, with much of it spent out on the deck. Much more of it spent in the kitchen. We have made a loaf of GFP French bread, baked three pizza crusts from the GFP French bread mix, and made lasagna. The latter is cooling as I type and will be ready to serve in five minutes. The instructions say that the Gluten-Free Pantry mix...
  2. Cellulose is gluten-free. It is derived from wood pulp or cotton.
  3. Welcome to the board. I'm glad you found us. I would tend to agree with the person on that other board. A celiac following a gluten-free diet will usually completely heal, and all symptoms will cease. Reintroducing gluten will cause the autoimmune response to begin again, and damage to the intestines will recur. If this takes place slowly, the result...
  4. Good morning, all. Patti looks very scholarly in her new do wif her specs. Not much happening around here. No live concerts, chuckwagon races, wedding planning, nuttin. Day 21 of the Toronto garbage strike, with no end in sight. Enjoy you Sunday.
  5. I stumbled on this old topic while looking for something else, but wanted to respond because there is confusion here. M&Ms are made by Mars, not by Hershey, and are, if I recall correctly, gluten-free.
  6. Welcome back! And Happy Birthday! I believe that all your posts from long ago are still here. The buttons for posts and topics in the profile only show the most recent five, and only within a relatively short time span. But if I choose "Find members posts" from the pull-down, I get five pages of results, with the newest being from November of 2004. Hover...
  7. This won't be a complete answer, but I can respond based upon my own experience with this procedure as an adult. Red food color can temporarily discolor the lining of the intestines making the appear inflamed when they are not, and by doing so mask real inflammation. Jell-o in flavors like lemon or lime is okay, as is clear apple juice.
  8. OMG. Calgary will never be the same again.
  9. There is an excellent article about celiac disease in today's Globe and Mail. It is the lead in the Life section, with "CELIAC SURGE" in 1-inch letters on the front page of the print edition. Open Original Shared Link Click again to see the complete article.
  10. No to the first part--the oil is dedicated to potato products. The fries and hash browns are cooked in fryers at the front of the store by the window crew. Everything else that is fried is done at the back of the store by the grill crew. But the oil itself may be an issue for some of us. I eat the fries and hash browns and have never had an issue. I live...
  11. Yeast extract is not a concern with respect to gluten, but it is a possible source of monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG does not contain gluten, but does cause adverse reactions unrelated to celiac disease in some people. Without seeing the complete ingredient list, I can't guess what other ones might be of concern.
  12. Quiet, isn't it. Where is everybody?
  13. Nor have I. Styrofoam is a registered trademark of the Dow Chemical Company for their brand of extruded polystyrene foam. They do not make any products which are used in the packaging or serving of food products. Can you tell that my background includes involvement with intellectual property law? Many companies make products for food packaging or service...
  14. Yes, our store is one of the franchised ones in the mentioned chain. We see it as good news for the company and its franchisees. Happy birthday to Mark!
  15. Open Original Shared Link As you may know, Jacquie and I are franchisees of this company. I see this as a positive change, but time will tell. Chocolate martinis are probably not a good idea for a diabetic like me, so I will stick to the traditional gin and vermouth ones. Jess, do let us know about them, if you can still find the keyboard and type...
  16. Tis late on Sunday. Tomorrow will be the ninth anniversary of my appointment with the doctor to get the results of my biopsy. Not a surprise, but it did finally confirm what had been making me so sick for so many years. Things for celiacs today are so much easier than they were nine years ago. I wonder what things will be like in another nine years......
  17. Welcome to the board. My first guess is the fryer oil. If they fry battered stuff in the same oil as the french fries, some gluten will transfer to the oil and then to the fries. If you are new to the diet, and have damage to the villi, then digestive issues are likely to continue until the villi heal, even if your diet is 100% gluten-free. Many of...
  18. Thanks to everybody. We had a good evening. Patti, your av says it well, except the wine was red. Gluten-free pizza and wine at Il Fornello (the place where we met up with Emily last fall).
  19. Sometimes a product which is derived from a gluten grain is so highly processed that no detectable gluten remains. Whether such a product is safe for a celiac to consume has been the subject of much debate. For most of us, this product would be fine, but some are extremely sensitive and may have a problem. Microscopic quantities of gluten might be present...
  20. The only time I worry about cheese is when it is a cheese spread, cheese sauce, or is flavored. Pure cheese, including cottage cheese and cream cheese, is not something where I worry about cross-contact, because a cheese factory isn't likely to process gluten products. Same for things like milk and butter. Some people worry about shredded cheeses, but...
  21. No major events planned here today. Jacquie is at the store all day. We are going out for dinner this evening. Happy Fourth to all!
  22. Welcome aboard, Krista. We are all ex-smokers here. You are now an ex-smoker (get used to saying it) and you are one of us. The future starts now. It is smoke-free (and gluten-free, too).
  23. Yay! Whoopee! I know that you will do this. As mentioned, come over to the smoking thread for our support group. For me, it is 19 years, two months, and a few days. I will never go back.
  24. Suzie's back! Better weather here than up Emily's way. But the civic employee strike is in its twelfth day, and the garbage is piling up (and stinking).
