  1. Keep in mind that, today, any label that discloses possible contamination sources is totally voluntary. There is no law or regulation requiring it, so the absence of such a disclosure on a label does not mean anything. Do you ever eat in a restaurant? If so, the kitchen is a shared facility and the dishes and cutlery are shared equipment. Do you have...
  2. The word "gluten" is ambiguous, and the phrase "gluten-free" does not have a definition backed by either legislation or regulation in the USA, yet. I understand your frustration. The word gluten can refer to the protein component of any grain, or even to other plants which are not really grains. As we use the term, it refers to the proteins of wheat...
  3. The Make Beliefs? I used to be a fan, watching Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday. The last season I followed was the 1967-68 one. For me, the expansion just destroyed the quality. This was before the influx of European players, and there was enough talent around to populate six, or maybe seven teams. Twelve was just too many. I have looked...
  4. Yes, corn gluten is safe. When we use the term gluten to refer to intolerance, it refers to the gluten of four grains. But the word technically means the protein of a plant, so other grains contain a substance that can be correctly termed gluten. In addition to "corn gluten" you may sometimes see "rice gluten." Both of these "glutens" are safe for us....
  5. Like I said, added flavor is another matter, as to gluten. MSG is a topic of its own. Search the board for MSG and/or glutamic acid and you will find plenty of discussion on this. The only thing about glutamates that we agree on is that we don't agree.
  6. Plain tuna should be fine, either in water or oil. As mentioned, added flavor puts a whole new spin on the world.
  7. Maltose is a highly refined simple sugar obtained by enzymatic breakdown of starch. While it can come from any starch, the end product is a gluten-free sugar. High Maltose Corn Syrup is corn syrup processed to maximize the Maltose content. It is from corn, and is definitely gluten-free. It is closely related to High Fructose Corn Syrup, which has come...
  8. Smirnoff vodka is made from corn and is gluten-free. Smirnoff Ice is not vodka. These coolers may or may not be gluten-free, depending on where you are. In most US states, they are malt beverages. Liquor laws vary by state, and in some states they may be gluten-free. Where I live, they are vodka-based, but can only be sold in government liquor stores....
  9. I received a personal message from jmcbride4291, and have found the statement on the Knorr FAQ page that he refers to. It says (in part): The emphasis on gluten is my own, but it definitely says that gluten will still be clearly listed on the label. There has been some confusion, but there is no change to the labeling policy at Knorr/Unilever. Yippee...
  10. Bell Canada can be a royal pain in the @$$ at times. There were some problems where we live with wet underground cables last year, and they dug up our front lawn not once but twice. And I don't mean small excavations. The holes were about six feet square and five feet deep. Their contractor digs the hole, then Bell comes and does their work, and then, eventually...
  11. Lipton and Knorr are owned by Unilever. If this is true, it is a major deviation from Unilever's long-standing policy of clearly disclosing gluten in all their products. I looked for a statement at Knorr's web site regarding gluten, but could not find one. Open Original Shared Link On that page it says: Can you provide the source for your information...
  12. Come here any time, Stef. You have friends here. Please keep in touch.
  13. I hope it is a happy one. Four and a half years separate us, too. Make sure they're gluten-free, Patti. Not much else to say. Long day. Must go make dinner.
  14. Open Original Shared Link. The list is not complete by any means, but should be helpful. Scroll down to see my reply to the topic.
  15. Ours is just about all gone. The weather has been lovely the last three days, and I have spent much time outside. The barbecue is open for the season, as of Saturday evening. Tomorrow it is going to rain, so it will be an indoor cooked supper. It is not quite mild enough yet to set up the table on the back deck and eat out there. July 4th in Times Square...
  16. Pure maple syrup is gluten-free and 100% natural. It is rather expensive. All those other maple-flavored syrups are highly processed, and many contain gluten.
  17. Most adhesives do not contain gluten. Resin based products, such as epoxy, and most solvent-based adhesives (sealants, plastic cement) do not contain gluten. Some adhesives of the kind that use water/saliva as an activator do, but even then it is not all of them. I don't have a list, because by and large, I don't eat the adhesives, and wash carefully...
  18. "May contain xxx" can also be code for "processed in a facility that also processes xxx." Labeling for possible contamination is completely voluntary, and can take various forms: May contain traces of xxx. May contain xxx. Processed in a facility that also processes xxx. Manufactured on equipment that is also used for products containing xxx. etc....
  19. Open Original Shared Link There were tags around the link in the original post that caused it to fail.
  20. I was thinking about possible fixes, and that one came to mind, but I wasn't sure if I could explain it well enough in a message: Display your desktop; Right click where there isn't an icon; Click Properties... I'm glad you found your answer. There was at least one other to look into. Wonderful news! OMG! Emily, take cover in a...
  21. What Patti is referring to is in Internet Explorer. I don't normally use it; I use Mozilla Firefox for most things. I haven't seen a problem with Firefox, but I just used IE to look at the board, and noticed that I had horizontal scroll bars. I reduced it to 88% and they went away. In IE, pressing <ctrl>+ will zoom the view in, <ctrl>- will...
  22. If you have been gluten-free for any length of time, the antibody test is going to be negative. The body does not produce them, except in response to gluten, and they don't stay in your system forever. The gene test being positive means that you are susceptible to celiac disease. So you may or may not have it. To prove it would require a gluten challenge...
  23. Arm & Hammer Super Scoop is safe. We use it. The principal one to avoid is Swheat Scoop - it is made from wheat as the primary ingredient. It works very well, but for obvious reasons I won't have it in the house. Other than Swheat Scoop, just about any unscented litter is likely to be safe. Also, there is one other that I don't have details on ...
