  1. Go for it, Amanda. You can not make a better investment than your own home. As mentioned, rent payments are just gone. Every dollar you put towards the mortgage is investing in your future. And in the US (but not in Canada), you can take a tax deduction for the interest.
  2. Whey is a milk product. It does not contain gluten, but if you are also casein intolerant you must avoid whey.
  3. Hello all. Another busy Wednesday. It is going to snow like heck overnight. Again. Another morning trek through snowbound streets populated with people who can't drive in winter, to arrive at the store and have to shovel the snow off of the lot. Just like today. So, MJ is on Emily's butt. We have to see this. Wait, it is too late, it is now the whole...
  4. Kat and I have been in touch via email. It was positive. I think she is going to win this time around.
  5. Looks like another heavy snow overnight. We must be at the store early since our weekly delivery truck will arrive by 8:30. The Bumper Dumper is at the same time hilarious and practical. But just where do you park to, well, you know... Our Queen, Sarah, has gone missing again. Was it something one of us said? Good night, all.
  6. If you reduce your gluten intake, it is common for you to become more sensitive. Try cutting it out completely for a while. If you feel better, you may want to consider trying a gluten challenge where you reintroduce it to your diet. If you get sick again then you know the answer.
  7. Well, you already are aware about fruits, vegetables and meat. Those are fine when they are plain. It is the seasonings that can be a problem. If you want bread and other baked stuff, these can be made without either gluten or casein. Casein is the protein in milk, so a casein-free diet and a dairy-free diet are pretty much the same thing. There are a...
  8. As Patti and Lisa said, there are a lot of things that can affect recovery time. I saw a noticeable improvement in a couple of weeks, but took about six months to fully recover. The older you are, the longer it will take. The amount of damage is also a factor. I was an undiagnosed, out of control celiac for at least five years of severe symptoms. My villi...
  9. I've been lurking in this thread, not wanting to post my own story since it might be taken as bragging. I could say that I quit thousands of times, only to start again in the morning. I quit for good in April of 1990. I say for good because I am long past the cravings and have no desire to ever smoke again. Twice before I quit but lapsed back. The first...
  10. Here in the frozen North, there is VH brand Soy Sauce. It is gluten-free and is sold as a mainstream product in just about every grocery store. We use it, and think highly of it. VH has a large line of sauces, and just about all of them are gluten-free. VH is owned by ConAgra, an American company, but is only sold in Canada. Pity.
  11. Look for the line near the top of the screen where is says "Logged in as." Click on My Controls, which is to the right. On the right side of the new screen is a major heading, Menu. The bottommost item (you'll probably have to scroll down) is Change Password.
  12. Giants won, 17-14. David kicked the s**t out of Goliath (maybe I got the quote wrong).
  13. La Messegere is available in Ontario at selected Open Original Shared Link outlets. You can find the stores that carry it be using the the search function on the site linked to just above. If yours does not carry it, they can order it for you. It retails in a six-pack, but the distribution unit to the store is a case of four six-packs. Last time I did the...
  14. While the article is interesting in a way, I don't see the relevance of it to this thread.
  15. They same guy who, after discovering a bolt with a left-hand thread, swallows the bait when told to find the left-handed wrench, er, spanner. I'll go have another look. That thread started out okay.
  16. We're 3 km south of 401 via Yonge St, so you'll pass pretty close by. But it is about 110 km more to Bradford, so you would need a really long time between games for a side trip. Jacquie has been known to come here and read sometimes. If you see a guest in Sillyville, it could be her.
  17. It has been seven and a half years. Yes, I have developed what might be called an instinct. I read labels. I reread labels. I know which companies have a clear gluten disclosure policy. I read labels. I call companies with uncertain ingredients, or I choose another brand. I read labels. I ask questions in restaurants, and prefer restaurants that I know are...
  18. So, here I am again, after preparing and enjoying a gluten-free dinner with Jacquie. It has been a busy two days at the store. We have hired a new team member to replace Sarah, who as you who have been reading know is going on pregnancy leave soon. Jacquie and I usually are both in on Friday. We came in for the entire day, since Sarah, who usually works...
  19. This was certainly a part of it, with slow film taking a long exposure. Faster exposures could be made with wide aperture lenses, but the optics weren't so great then so you got blurry results. Sharp, clear image ==> small aperture (high f-stop number) ==> long exposure time. Technology has improved, but the principle still applies. Yes, another...
  20. A bit of snow on the ground, but the worst is yet to come. And, yes, my brother Rob is famous. He is the author Robert J. Sawyer. Off I go. Back this evening.
  21. Good morning, all. Another day of work commercial enterprise, with heavy snow added just for fun.
  22. What happens here, stays here? Like, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? Hmm. It is pretty easy for an outsider to peek into our world. If you see a guest reading the topic, you never know who it might be. Even Jacquie sometimes visits us as a guest. Okay, Em, let's consider a visual image. A horn is a hard part of the anatomy that protudes upward...
  23. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 14 years before my celiac diagnosis. As Alex and Emily have noted, the symptoms are distinct. You will feel tired and be thirsty all the time. You will urinate excessively. At first, you may think that you are urinating so much because you are drinking so much because you are so thirsty. WRONG. You are peeing your...
  24. Good morning, all. I'm off to work and won't be back until after five.
  25. My understanding is that the eight major allergens (wheat is one of them) must be disclosed regardless of how small the quantity. That is law (not regulation) in the US, applying to all FDA regulated foods produced on or after January 1, 2006. It is unlikely that any foods made before 2006 are still on the store shelves.
