  1. I can't offer anytihing definite on ketchup since I don't use it, but I think that Heinz is gluten free. As to mustard, all forms of French's Mustard are gluten free. If you toast ordinary baked goods as well as gluten-free ones, you should have separate toasters. Some gluten will stick in the toaster in the crumbs and will cross comtaminate the gluten...
  2. Hormel is on the list of trusted manufacturers that will clearly disclose any gluten source in the ingredients. If it has wheat, barley, rye or oats it will say exacly that word in the list. So, if it doesn't mention it, then it does not contain it. I wish all food companies were like this
  3. I tried it this afternoon, and was quite pleased. It is a very nice beer. The hops are distinct but not overpowering, and it does not have the sweet taste I remember of many Canadian traditional barley-based beers (such as Molson Canadian-like sticking your face in a bouquet of flowers ). La Messagere is delightful. I am also pleased that is low in carbohydrates...
  4. "Barley" = Gluten "Malt" = Gluten Anything from barley is taboo for sure. Malt unless explicitly stated as being from another source is barley. So, in general, anything with malt in the name is to be avoided. Maltodextrin sounds like a problem, but in the US, and in every case I know of in Canada, is made from corn unless explicitly qualified.
  5. At McDonalds the eggs, sausage and hash browns are gluten free. Ask for a Big Brekafast without the biscuit/muffin and you should be fine. You may even get an extra something in exchange for the bread item. I know that this is high in fat, but when I am away for a day or two I find it to be a useful option.
  6. The Ontario government stores (LCBO) listed it a while back, but until today I had not seen any. I have been checking regularly. But this aftermoon I was in a store I have only been to a couple of times before, and they had it. $16.95 for a case of 6. I bought a case, and it is chilling in my fridge now. I'll post a review after I have tried it, which will...
  7. Except for Croscarmellose Sodium and Hypromellose, all of the ingredients you listed are on the safe list I use. I found this on Croscarmellose Sodium: "Description: Cross linked sodium carboxymethylcellulose White, free flowing powder with high absorption capacity. Contains no sugar or starch." Sounds safe (no starch). Hypromellose is an unknown...
  8. After I was first diagnosed, I strayed a few times, but I quickly learned that it was a bad idea. I have accidently ingested gluten a few times since, but have not knowingly touched anything with gluten since October 2000 (a beer, soon regretted).
  9. To anniej55: I had both an endoscopy and a colonoscopy at the same time because the doctor wanted to cover all the bases. Although celiac disease was the most likely cause of all my symptoms, if it was not celiac disease then other things needed to be looked at. The colonsocopy found nothing abnormal. The endoscopy and related biopsies found significant...
  10. Yeast is not a concern for most celiacs. A few are specifcally sensitive to yeast and must avoid it. But the gluten in bread and other foods comes not from the yeast, but from the grain that the yeast digests. Enjoy the fresh gluten free bread.

    ARCHIVED Grrrr....

BamBam, I am a man and I am not the only one here who can't eat wheat! I don't think the genes that are associated with celiac disease are gender biased, but it does seem that a lot more females are diagnosed and are aware of the disease. Maybe it's like that stereoptype where a guy who gets lost never asks for directions 'cuz it would mean admitting...
  12. I had both procedures five years ago. As Jen said, the worst part was the colonoscopy prep: purging with high doses of laxatives (I already had D bad enough but this was like nothing before). The actual procedure was easy. I was put on an IV, sedated, and woke up later in the recovery room. No pain during or after. My villi were missing in action, but that...
  13. Neither! OK, I'm male, but at 51 I hardly qualify as a boy. As others have noted, the vast majority of the regulars here are female. Others who have a Y chromosome that I can think of include celiac3270, lovegrov (Richard), kvogt (he has not posted his name, but I know him), VydorScope (Vincent), admin (Scott), ianm. I'm sure there are some other guys...
  14. I'm 51, but I don't think I can be of much help. Most "hard" spirits are gluten-free due to being distilled. I have never found a wine that is not gluten-free, so that is my usual choice of libation. I have not looked into the various coolers on the market as they tend to be too sweet for my taste. But there are probably some out there that combine fruit...
  15. I have type 1 diabetes, diagnosed in March 1986 (complication of undiagnosed celiac?), so for me, the risk associated with aspartame is trivial compared to the effect of taking in the highly concentrated sugar in regular soda. I remember studies years ago that showed that if a lab rat consumed the equivalent of 24 cans per day of diet soda it would get cancer...
  16. We have a propane BBQ and use it a lot during the good weather. Only gluten-free foods go on the grill, so no worries. We do toast buns, but only gluten-free ones. I would not rely on heat alone to clear a contaminated grill, but would remove the grids and thoroughly wash them. Natural gas would be the same. Pure charcoal is okay too, but most commercial...
  17. Ah, Fenway. I wouldn't trust the hot dogs at all. Ice cream is probably safe, but watch out for cones (gluten) or cross contamination from cones. Popcorn is okay by itself, and should be fine if plain--avoid flavored ones. The "butter" topping (which has not been butter in decades) is likely corn oil margarine, but I would stay with the plain stuff just to...
  18. Distilled spirits, including gin, are now generally accepted as gluten free even if the original source is a grain which contains gluten. The distillation process does not allow the large molecules (gluten) to pass into the distallate. Distilled vinegar from any source is safe for the same reason. I don't use tonic water as it is too sweet for my taste...
  19. Wine is gluten free, unless something is added to it that has gluten. I do not know of any wine that does, so I never worry about wine. Enjoy it!
  20. Hi, Christien, I am also in Canada. Welcome to the forum. There are several other Canadians on here, but as far as I know we are the only two males. If there are any other Canadian guys active here, please make yourself known. I'm just outside Toronto. Where are you? BTW, cats rule the world. Humans only exist to serve them. We own a pet food and...
  21. My wife does not have celiac disease and eats some foods with gluten in them. But she is very careful about keeping them away from anything I will eat, or the food preparation surfaces used for my food. Mostly, we eat the same gluten-free diet. She sometimes eats cereal at breakfast which is not gluten-free, or she will have crackers in her lunch (she loves...
  22. I agree with Kaiti and celiac3270. There is a good probability that you have celiac disease, but you should be tested to be sure as there are other possible causes for your symptoms. The tests all measure your reaction to gluten, so do not stop eating gluten until after the tests.
  23. Pectin is a complex carbohydrate found in many fruits and some vegetables. Sources include apples, plums, peaches and similar fruits. It is not a source of gluten. You should be able to obtain it at a health/specialty food store.
  24. In Romans 14:14-17, the link to Leviticus 11 is obvious, but Paul the apostle does not restrict his message solely to that. A much broader interpretation is, I believe, equally valid: You are not judged by what you do or do not eat; judge not another by what they do or do not eat. In the King James version, Romans 14:14 reads: "I know, and am persuaded...
  25. This is a clear, definite diagnosis of celiac disease. My endoscopy results were very similar. Given that, I would not worry too much about decoding the other obscure language. Many other conditions can be presented when celiac is present and gluten is still being ingested. As I understand it, the lympho... language refers to the state of the immune system...
